Upon hearing of the agreement between Likud and Yisrael Beitenu, Shas’ Aryeh Deri stated “this is not just another agreement, but this is the creation of a new entity, Likud Beitenu”, seeking to stress the significance of the deal, which will pull Likud away from its traditional coalition partners, the chareidim, and move towards more pro-secular policies.
Deri warned of the new reality that will exist if this agreement is approved by the directorate of the parties, one that will compel chareidi parties including Shas to remain in opposition.
One must realize that such an agreement might result in Yair Lapid becoming the next minister of the interior, giving him the authority to recognize non-frum conversions for example. He would support civil marriage and other steps that would increase intermarriage in Eretz Yisrael chas v’sholom.
In the erev shabbos Hamodia calls for achdus in response to the deal, aware of the treat to Torah Jewry in Eretz Yisrael if a pro-secular coalition is established.
