The Noose Tightens: Olmert Says He Will Resign If Indicted

May 8, 2008

olmert ffffuny.jpgAS YWN had been posting, PM Olmert is under an intense investigation, and as predicted - the political earthquake in Israel might just be well under way. Many questions remain unanswered, but one thing is for certain, the day of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel will now have new meaning to it.

Earlier this evening, the Tel Aviv District Court decided to lift the gag-order previously placed on the Olmert investigation. Minutes later, Olmert held a press conference at his official residence. Olmert said there was nothing illegal about the campaign contributions he received, and said the following statements:

“I look into the eyes of each and every one of you,” he said, referring to Israeli citizens, “and say that I have never taken a bribe. I never took a penny for myself.”

“I was chosen to lead the country and I have no intention of stepping down, but if Attorney General Menachem Mazuz decides to file and indictment against me I shall resigned immediate, even though I am not required to do so by law.

“We are in the midst of a process critical to Israel’s future and security. I have been serving the Israeli public in various roles for over 30 years……I regret the hardship imposed on the public, on my affiliates and my family. I hope this storm too shall pass,” he concluded.

Senior YWN - Israel correspondent Yechiel Spira will have a comprehensive report in the morning hours (Israel time).

  7. please let’s not get all excited. Anyone else that will sit in that seat will get booted for some other corruption charge. What sort of person becomes a politician anyway? They all arrive in office having sold their soul to the devil. The fact that he was caught was because HaShem must have decided that it’s time to put another puppet into place.

  8. #7, Many people become politicians for the right reasons, i.e. to help their community and their country. It is unfortunate that most politicians end up corrupted in some way, however complaining about won’t help. Perhaps one of the “perfect” jews that post here should run for office and put their money where their mouth is.

  9. it is quit known that the holy Chazon Ish said at the beginning of the state of israel in 1948, “es ken nisht hoben a kiyum mer vie zechtsik yor” if the foundation is not al pi torah umitzvos.
so it all makes sense, his resignation at this point, eventho realistically it already doesnt have a kiyum, since its quit obvious that zionism is bankrupt, and the gov’t is corrupt..
this is coming from a true zionist “vesechezenu einenu beshuvcho letzioyon”

  12. It can’t be a “bribe” because that would be illegal and the alleged briber (and alleged moser) just got a bracha from a Gadol, as reported here on YWN. Maybe it was a “strange gift”.
