New Spring Valley Mayor Fires 3 Staffers, Passes New Policies

bNew Spring Valley Mayor Demeza Delhomme has made sure his first week in office was a serious shakeup.

The longtime trustee has so far fired three staffers and passed several new policies, including a ban that prevents village employees from responding to fires as volunteer firefighters.

County fire officials call the new policy dangerous, but Delhomme says the village can’t afford to lose staff who volunteer as firefighters every time there’s an emergency call.

The Democrat also defends his decision to fire Village Clerk Sherri Scott. She says she plans to hire an attorney to sue the new mayor, arguing that her term wasn’t up until January. Delhomme says Scott will continue to be paid until the end of her term.

Delhomme is also passing a resolution to make the under-funded East Ramapo School Board the village’s priority.

Another priority for Mayor Delhomme is a park behind the village’s main street area. He says it’s filthy, falling apart and a safety threat to children. Delhomme says village trucks are already filling the park with new soil.

In January, he says he’ll ask county and state officials for grant money to revitalize the area.
