Village Of Kiryas Joel Sues To Block Orange County Casino

kjA Hasidic Jewish village has mounted a legal challenge seeking to halt a casino proposed for upstate New York.

The lawsuit filed by the village of Kiryas Joel in Orange County alleges that officials in two nearby communities offered support for the project without analyzing the impact it would have on the village.

The lawsuit says the casino would burden the local sewer system and generate an “undesirable” level of traffic and other negative impacts. The suit seeks to halt the project and annul agreements between casino developers and officials in South Blooming Grove and the town of Blooming Grove.

Cordish Companies and Penn National Gaming are the developers behind the proposal, one of several competing for an upstate casino license.

Messages were left Friday with developers and local officials.

  1. Kiryas Joel , be careful what you sue for , because all you need is for the other side to tell the judge that just like we expanded these services for you , now do it for us.

  2. Casinos are not only a plague (see comment no. 3), they are no longer a good business idea or a good source of revenue for the governments that permit them. Three casinos are closing in Atlantic City, NJ, in the next month or so (including one owned or operated by self-proclaimed business genius Donald Trump), and the industry is in retreat and overdeveloped. Good luck to KJ.

  3. I agree that casinos are a bad thing, but find it interesting that KJ has no compunctions about throwing their political weight around in the US, regardless of the way their neighboring communities see them. What happened to the Satmar aversion to “Hisgorus BaUmos”? Does that for some reason only apply to “other” Jews that don’t agree with their Shitos, but not to their Heilige Kehila?

I truly am puzzled by this inconsistency. If anyone has a good explanation, I’d love to hear it.
