Hikind Hosts Yeshiva Bus Managers Meeting; Works To Eliminate Early A.M. Sanitation Runs

hAssemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) hosted a meeting today with representatives of Boro Park’s yeshiva bus managers to help resolve issues impacting their bus drivers, the yeshivas and ultimately the entire community.

Following up on concerns recently raised in a meeting with the bus managers, Assemblyman Hikind made it clear that his top priority is finding a solution to the traffic nightmare caused by sanitation pick-ups which occur concurrently with school bus runs in the morning. The Assemblyman has approached the Sanitation Department and plans to meet with them soon to discuss rescheduling garbage pick-ups that typically occur between 7:30 am and 9:30 am.

“The sanitation drivers that I’ve spoken with agree—they don’t want to do their runs when children are boarding buses either,” said Hikind. “Resolving this issue will be a win-win for Sanitation and for our community.” In a recent appearance on “The Dov Hikind Radio Show,” NYC Mayor Bill de Blassio agreed with Assemblyman Hikind that this matter must be resolved. “We worked on this issue when I was on the City Council,” said the Mayor, “and I’m going to work with Sanitation to help find a solution.”

A number of other issues regarding traffic flow ere also discussed. The other major issue of concern is overnight parking for Yeshiva school buses. With 40 yeshivas operating in Boro Park and more than 260 buses, drivers are in desperate need of acceptable bus layovers. The current situation, where certain neighborhoods are burdened by losing their parking spots night after night—and being unable to see what is occurring on the streets—is unacceptable. Assemblyman Hikind is working with the bus managers, the NYPD’s 66th Precinct, and others to help resolve the issue.

  1. Mr. Hikind,
I don’t know if you or your staff read YWN but just in case you do may I suggest what seems a simple solution to the garbage truck problem. Why not have the garbage trucks coordinated to pick up during alternate side before the cleaning truck arrives. Then there is an extra driving lane on any particular block plus the cleaning truck will sweep up after the mess left behind by garbage men.
This will benefit all drivers not only school buses.
    Seems pretty simple to me.
