Extremely icy conditions on Route 17 in Rock Hill early Tuesday morning resulted in a pileup of six trucks and two cars leaving one dead and wreckage strewn across both east and westbound lanes.

The crash, between exits 110 and 109 westbound involved six tractor-trailer trucks, three of which were hauling garbage. They skidded on black ice and crashed into one another as well two cars, crushing them and killing one person, Sullivan County Emergency Services Commissioner Richard Martinkovic said.

Four of the trucks were totally destroyed and garbage was scattered across all four lanes of the highway.

Several police, fire and ambulance departments were on the scene of the 4 a.m. chain reaction incident and State Police are conducting an investigation with the westbound lanes expected to be closed for hours.

Martinkovic said the secondary roads have been sanded and are, for the most part, in good traveling condition.
