Suspect In Custody Following Robbery At Sloatsburg Rest Area On NYS Thruway


pOn Sunday March 15, 2015 just before 7:00PM, the NY State Police received a report of a robbery which occurred at the Ramapo (Sloatsburg) Service Area on I-87. The suspect, unknown if armed, reportedly fled from the Sunoco gas station on foot.

State Police began an investigation which led them to an area near the Ramapo River. There, they located the suspect who had attempted to cross the river and subsequently became stranded on a rock.

State Police Aviation, Marine Patrol, Crisis Negotiators, and Special Operations Response Team responded to the scene. The suspect, later identified as Richard P. Morgan, 49, of Ramapo, NY, was safely taken into custody following a rescue operation.

Morgan was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia. Felony charges are pending and he remains under arrest as police are continuing their investigation.
