Speed cameras have produced a surge in tickets and generated nearly $17 million in revenue for New York City.
The Daily News reports that last year more than 445,000 speed-camera tickets were issues. That’s compared to nearly 118,000 issued manually by police officers over the same period.
According to data obtained via a Freedom of Information Law, the News says more than $5 million in outstanding speed camera tickets is still owed.
The city had 49 speed cameras in operation last year. Currently, 57 are operational. The city plans to have a total of 140 cameras operating by the end of the year as part of its Vision Zero plan to reduce traffic fatalities.
Tickets are issued when drivers go more than 10 mph over the speed limit.

The whole point of speeding fines is to force people to drive at a safe speed.
To use the money for driver education, speed cameras, and the like is appropriate. In other words the fines are used to stamp out the offence. When people don’t speed you don’t need equipment or the fines.
The moment the fines are considered a significant part of general revenue, they become a hazard. The cash attracts freebooter cops, lackey prosecutors, corrupt judges, and politicians that are in it for the graft. We want to get rid the Ferguson mob and its ilk, not not replicate it in New York and other places
