NYC Comptroller Says City Pays ‘Invisible Fare’ To Run MTA

mta1New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer says city residents are paying an “invisible fare” of $130 a month per household to run the MTA.

Stringer said Tuesday that in addition to the $5.3 billion city residents paid in fares and tolls last year, New Yorkers paid $4.8 billion in taxes, subsidies and direct expenditures to the MTA.

The $4.8 billion includes taxes and fees levied on city residents such as the 50-cent-a-ride taxi surcharge as well as $612.5 million for debt service payments and policing the subway system.

Stringer said New York City contributed 68 percent of the MTA’s operating budget in fiscal year 2014 while New York state paid just 4 percent or $603.5 million.

He said the state and federal governments need to do more to support mass transit.

  1. Perhaps it’s time to fire those running it. Bring in out side auditors. And find out why its so expensive. What they find is waste waste and mismanagement

  2. Kollel, it’s called union of thugs! Hoodies! They hide their faces in rachmoones! Any business wages must be compared to the average general industry wage. Bonuses are same. There is no reason any business should have to pay 5 times the price any other business pays per worker just because they are part of a union! B’lasso, it’s time to fire you! Unions are robbing us all blind! Under your command, unions get priority for city bids. Please explain this to the taxpayer! The city uses my hard earned money to hire the most expensive! (not the best!) I always wonder, what happens in colder countries where the snow is more common. Do they also have man holes in the street? (pot holes the size of manholes!) Or is it only us that pay like stupid fools that get overpriced and get NOTHING! Including you deblasio. We are paying high taxes and get Nothing (you)!
