IG Report: NYPD Body Cameras Should Record All Interactions

nypdrBefore the NYPD moves forward with its body camera program for officers, the department’s inspector general wants his own say on how the program should be expanded.

In December, the NYPD outfitted 54 of its officers with body cameras in six precincts.

In the first examination of this pilot program, the inspector general is urging One Police Plaza to broaden its standard for when officers should record interactions with the public.

The inspector general’s report suggests officers record all street encounters or all investigative contacts.

Currently, officers are directed to record interactions that raise “reasonable suspicion.”

The report also suggests top brass should provide officers with guidance on how to alert people they are being recorded.
