NYPD Officer Critically Injured In Crash On NYS Thruway; Was Ejected From Vehicle

On Sunday evening, at approximately 8:35PM, a serious accident was reported to the State Police, involving an overturned vehicle.

POlice report that the crash involved 2 vehicles northbound on I-87 between Exits 15A (Sloatsburg) and 16 (Harriman).

The preliminary investigation determined a 2015 Jeep Wrangler struck the rear of a 2003 Hyundai. The Jeep subsequently lost control, overturning several times ejecting the driver from the vehicle.

The driver of the Jeep, Alexis Penate, 32 of Highland Mills, NY (an off-duty New York City Police Officer) was air-lifted to Westchester Medical Center having sustained head trauma and internal injuries, and is in critical condition. The victims were treated on the scene by Kiryas Joel Hatzolah.

The driver of the Hyundai and his passenger were uninjured.

The accident is still under investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.

  1. I feel terrible for the officer but that same officer would ticket me if my seat belt wasn’t engaged!!!BTW, I also get tickets if I use my cell phone but police officers use their’s with impunity.
