NY Speaker: Proposal To Hike Taxes On Millionaires Is Fair

heasNew York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie isn’t backing away from a proposal to raise taxes on millionaires, despite strong opposition from Senate Republicans and a shrug from Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Heastie’s plan would raise income taxes on 56,000 of the state’s wealthiest residents, costing them an average of $33,000 more. It would also reduce rates for middle class workers to give them an average savings of $50, and increase the earned-income tax credit for low-income workers.

Republican Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan says he’s opposed to raising taxes on anyone. Cuomo, a Democrat, said there was no “reason or appetite” to take up the proposal this year.

Heastie defended his plan Wednesday on public radio, says it’s only fair to ask the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay more.

  1. Maryland did that a few years ago. That’s why Martin O’Malley is well on his way to the White House (as if…).

It appears that the richer you are, the easier it is to relocate to a state with lower tax rates, so raising taxes on the highest brackets well be emotionally satisfying to socialists and quasi-socialists (okay, Democrats, which as of 2016 is the same thing), it results in lower overall revenue.

  2. This guy Heastie also brought to the floor and voted for the anti-Semitic East Ramapo bill and yet the JCRC paid for his full trip to Israel, shame on them.
