The “Free Modi’in” organization is waging a battle to halt the planned construction of a number of shuls in that city, the daily HaMevaser reports.
Ironically, the activists ‘legitimize’ their opposition under the banner of equality for all – explaining new shuls would only serve some of the residents while cultural and entertainment centers serve most of the residents of the city. They further explain that seeking to erect shuls contradicts the city’s charter regarding projects that serve the entire population, which they feel shuls fail to meet this criteria.
The activists are willing to permit opening shuls in religious public schools or alternatively, building shuls in place of religious public schools, but under no circumstances in addition to the religious public schools.
