Mayor Barkat: Construction in Yerushalayim to Continue

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat did not waste time, responding to White House statements of a Jerusalem building freeze until 2012, stating building will indeed continue in the capital. The mayor’s announcement was released a number of hours after US special envoy George Mitchell announced that Israel agreed to US demands to halt construction.

Barkat stated that planned construction in both the Jewish and Arab sectors will continue as planned, adding he fully expects the Housing and Interior Ministries to approve projects towards meeting the need for continued construction in the capital, particularly towards keeping young couples in the capital by offering affordable housing.

PA (Palestinian Authority) officials on the other hand discounted the statements of the mayor, explaining the litmus test is in actions, not declarations, confident construction will be halted despite the mayors statements to the contrary.
