Firsly, the tie was worn because in Ruzhin the minhag was to wear a tie and the Rebbe zatzal was a descendant of Ruzhin. The tie vanished after the war when the Rebbe zatzal came to Eretz Yisroel.
Secondly, thank you so much for the photos, some are just beautiful. Do you have contact details for any of the photographers because there are some we’d really like a copy of.

That is the only picture where he wore a tie. You will see a tie in no other picture in the collection. This appears to be a picture taken at a simcha, when he was a very young bochur. Most likely, to honor the family whose simcha he was at, he followed their mode of dress, which was still within the bounds of yiddishe dress.
