As a matter of fact, a state of war existed for the entire period between WW1 and WW2 between Poland and Lithuania, because Lithuania wanted Vilna back.

The famous rescue of many Yeshivos, and Jews in general, from Vilna in 1940, occurred because the Russians gave Vilna to the Lithuanians when they dismantled Poland, and therefore, for a short time, Vilna wasn’t under the Communist Russians or the Nazis. Therefore, whoever made it to Vilna had a chance of fleeing Europe if they were able to get visas (that’s how the Mirrer Yeshiva was able to escape, among others).
