Petira Of Rabbi Herschel Schacter Z”L

candle914Prominent religious and community leader Rabbi Herschel Schacter has died in New York.

Schacter’s son, Rabbi Jacob Schacter, said his father died from natural causes Thursday at a hospice residence in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. He was 95.

The Brooklyn-born Schacter was an early student of Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik, who is considered one of the founders of Modern Orthodoxy, a movement within Orthodox Judaism.

Because of his closeness to Soloveitchik, Schacter was witness to, and played a role in, many of Judaism’s critical events during the second half of the twentieth century, said Chabad-Lubavitch leader Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky.

Schacter held prominent positions in American Jewish groups, including chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and founding member of the American Jewish Conference on Soviet Jewry.

He also served as rabbi of the Mosholu Jewish Center in the Bronx for more than 50 years.

Schacter served as an Army chaplain during World War II and was able to participate in the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. In 1956, he was a member of the first rabbinic delegation to the former Soviet Union.

He also became director of Rabbinic services at Yeshiva University.

Although you ABSOLUTELY MUST clarify that this is not Current Rosh Yeshiva Rav Herschel Schachter Yibadel LeChayim. I tore Kriyah and started crying before I realized that this isn’t the same HaRav Herschel Schachter.

  2. “I tore Kriyah and started crying before I realized that this isn’t the same HaRav Herschel Schachter.”

Their names are spelled differently. But you were not wrong to tear kriyah for Rabbi Hershel Schacter z’tz’l! He had a long and distinguished career of service to Klal Yisrael and there is nobody who could replace him.

How significant was he? I got no less than five different emails announcing his death, from three synagogues and a yeshiva. His funeral is tomorrow morning at the Riverdale Jewish Center at 10am; outside speakers will be set up for Kohanim. The shiva will be truncated by Pesach.

  3. Yeshiva world, you MUST clarify early on in your article that this is not the R Schachter Rosh kollel! I had an attack this morning before I realized it! Very irresponsible reporting! Not to mention the ayin hora aspect. Please! Change it now before more people wake up and see it this way!

  4. Nahapochu:don’t worry, you didn’t cry in vain, as there is a mitzvah to cry for any Tzaddik that passes away, I heard from Rabbi Mutzafi that its mekorev ha geula and also. Mechoper avonois.

  5. My condolences to the family of Rabbi Herschel Schacter…. But as previous people commented, what a wild ride YWN gave me before shabbos, thinking it was the younger YU Rosh Kollel.

I have heard that, on the contrary, it is a segula for arichas yamim if a death is erroneously reported.

What an azaz panim and disrespect for the niftar, A’H (I won’t use his name since it obviously confuses YOU). We don’t give a hespid for a niftar by first noting who he was NOT…He was and will always be Rav Herschel Schacter and the article clearly notes who he was, where he was the rav and even who his father is. No one would confuse him with the rosh yeshiva at REITS. Please don’t insult the memory of the niftar. The YWN editors handled this article 100 percent correctly

FYI – Rav Herschel Schachter shlita (current YU Rosh Yeshiva) has his last name spelled differently and also isn’t 95 years old, so that should tell you its a different person.

It would be insulting to the Aveilim and to the Mes for the article to mention that this isn’t someone else.

    Onlysimchas!

  9. Is this typical sensationalistic journalism by YWN. Same as the ridiculous “BUG-WARS” headline from earlier.
C’mon you know everyone knows THE Reb Herschel Schechter from YU. What a disgrace.

  10. I think if you read the article it CLEARLY States “Rabbi Jacob Schacter, said his father died from natural causes Thursday at a hospice residence in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. He was 95”. Last I checked the Rosh Yeshiva of YU is much younger and not in a nursing home baruch hashem!Careful to read before reacting so drastictly chas v’shalom.

  11. I saw Rav Herschel Schachter Shlita at Maariv last nite and to day at Shabbos haGodol Mincho, and spoke to him both times, and B’H he is doing very well & stealthyly, and I look forward BE’H to seeing him over Pesach.

Considering that I was at the funeral of his illustorous Father from whom I learned a lot, Rav Melech Schachter ZT’L, in 2007 at which time his father was about 94, obviously there never was a Havo Amino for any confusion.

  12. Now I am even more confused than ever about this petirah.

Preferably without resorting to fortuitous insults or any other sort of unnecessarily rudeness can someone kindly take a few moments to demonstrate the differences between the two different – but doubtless equally eminent – rabbanim, please?

If that is too much to ask for, where can I find information, please?
