Petira Of Reb Moshe Reichman Z”L – The Greatest Ba’al Tzedakah In History

candle914Toronto – YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Reb Moshe Yosef (Paul) Reichman Z”L at the age of 83. Reb Moshe was the leading Ba’al Tzedakah (philanthropist) in the last 100 years, and gave hundreds of millions of dollars to Tzedakah. There wasn’t a Mosod in the world that didn’t benefit from his Chessed. He was extremely close to many Gedolim, most notably Maran HaRav Shach ZATZAL. Reb Moshe paved the way to the current reality, that wealthy philanthropists donate money on a massive scale to support Mosdos Hatorah.

His success had little impact on his lifestyle, and he remained very private and unwilling to talk to the press about his major business dealings. In Toronto where he lived, he built a number of Yeshivos and Batei Midrashim.

He leaves behind a Mishpacha of Bnei & Bnos Torah, children and grandchildren, all following in his ways of Torah and Chessed.

The Levayah will take place in Toronto at Bais Yaakov Elementary School (15 Saranac Blvd.), Motzei Shabbos at 9:00 pm.

  1. Very sorry to hear of the passing of Reb Moshe. The description of this man, of Olympia and York and Canary Wharf fame, who started out in a humble egg business, was an exemplar to all Jewry. Despite his success in business, he continued to live a frum and extremely modest life, realizing that avodah Hashem, not wealth, were the keys to success in life.

  2. He learned with Rav Moshe Shternbuch zhlita in London by Rav Moshe Schneider zt”l during the war years. Rav Schneider needed one bachur to pick up the bread in the morning and one to wake up the boys in the morning. Rav Shternbuch offered to wake the boys and Mr. Reichmann offered to go pick up the bread. Rav Schneider said that they boy who woke up the boys will be a veritable talmid chochom and the one who picks up the bread will be incredibly rich. Mr. Reichmann was heard on more than one occasion commenting that he wished he had also woken up the boys.

One famous story: A new employee of a large bank in Toronto was present at a meeting with the managers of the bank and Reb Moshe. She heard them discussing various major projects and commitments from both sides. She was shocked that no papers were brought out to be signed and the meeting closed with the bank having promised a large investment based on the word of Reb Moshe alone and no securities or even signatures demanded. She remarked to a colleague that she cannot allow the bank to go forward with this. He answered her simply that if Mr Reichman’s word is good enough for the managers of the bank then it is good enough for her too. A walking Kiddush HaShem!!

  4. I heard the story a little different. Rav Schneider blessed Rav Shertbuch shlita, that just as he was concerned about the ruchniyas of others so too the Torah world should learn his Torah. Moshe Reichman was blessed that just as he was concerned about the food of the talmidim in the Yeshiva, so too the Torah world should eat from his food. Both berochos came to fruition.
