Being the Chief Rabbi of the IDF must be one of the most difficult roles for any rabbi. The Jews for whom you are responsible would range from anti-religious atheists to traditional to dati to charedi. And you would have to know backwards and forwards all the halachot related to military operations, most of which had not needed to be practiced by Jews for almost two millenia. With all due respect to Rabbi Piron, he did not serve as chief rabbi of Zurich. Zurich does not have a chief rabbi. Rabbi Piron served as rabbi of the ICZ, one of the three Orthodox kehillos of Zurich.
