Two people were arrested in Monsey for shooting a paintball gun at passing cars on Wednesday night.

The Ramapo Police tells YWN that they received a call on Wednesday evening around 10:17 from Rockland Chaverim who reported that there was a person shooting paintballs at passing cars on Suzanne Drive near Vincent Road in Monsey. Additional sources tell YWN that the suspects had also fired the gun at a 15-year-old Yeshiva student. Thankfully, he was not injured. Chaveirim told police that they were following the two suspects from a safe distance.

Ramapo Police quickly responded and arrested two suspects at the scene and recovered a paintball gun. One suspect was charged with reckless endangerment 2nd and criminal tampering – both are misdemeanors. The other suspect was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Both suspects names were being withheld due to age. After processing, both subjects were released to their parents.

This is not the first time the Monsey Jewish community was attacked by a paintball gun. In August 2013, YWN reported an incident where two Rockland Chaveirim members were shot by a paintball gun from a passing vehicle. Three teens were charged with multiple crimes in that incident, but only one was sentenced to two months in jail. The charges were dropped against the other two suspects.

Faulty Sensor Shuts Down Nuclear Reactor Near NYC

Wednesday, August 13th, 2014

nukeA nuclear power plant near New York City says a faulty sensor led to the automatic shutdown of a reactor that produces power for about a million homes.

Indian Point in Westchester County says Unit 3′s safety systems kicked in around noon Wednesday after a sensor detected a reactor pressure change.

Spokesman Jerry Nappi says there was no change.

He says the 1,000-megawatt reactor remains offline while workers determine the cause of the false signal. He says they’ll fix the sensor before it’s restarted.

Nappi says the plant’s other reactor is still operating and the shutdown shouldn’t cause outages since demand isn’t at peak levels.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says the shutdown happened as workers were testing safety systems. An agency spokesman says there were no health or safety risks.

Rockland Legislature Chairman Calls For Commission To Study Hate

Wednesday, August 6th, 2014

hcrPointing to recent hate crimes in Rockland County, Legislature Chairman Alden Wolfe Tuesday called for a commission to study anti-Semitism and racism in the county.

Rockland is a very diverse county and Wolfe said he was “shocked and disappointed” over two recent incidents where two locations were vandalized and defaced with swastikas and racist slogans.

“It’s really important that hate is often caused by ignorance and bringing a group of concerned people together and try to get to the bottom of why such hate exists and perhaps build bridges rather burn them I think would do a lot of good for the county,” he said.

Wolfe said it must be “crystal clear that our county has no tolerance for racism and anti-Semitism, because people who hate don’t differentiate between race or religion. They just hate.”

Spring Valley Mayor Remains Jailed Over Day Camp

Monday, August 4th, 2014

svmThe mayor of a suburban New York village remains jailed over a dispute involving a children’s day camp.

Mayor Demeza Delhomme was jailed Friday on a contempt of court charge.

The Journal News says he’ll remain behind bars until he satisfies a judge’s order to open a summer day camp for Spring Valley children.

The camp’s youth director had gotten into a conflict with the mayor and was suspended. The village attorney said that meant camp couldn’t be held.

But state Supreme Court Justice Gerald Loehr (LOHR) ordered Delhomme to open the civic center building for the camp; Delhomme assured him he had. But two trustees said some office doors were still locked and Delhomme was arrested.

The attorney says he was stunned by the judge’s decision.

Rockland County Sells Nursing Home To Private Company

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014

lThe County of Rockland has finalized the transfer of ownership of the Summit Park Hospital and Nursing Care Center to the Summit Park Acquisition Group for $36 million.

Shalom Braunstein, manager of Sympaticare LLC, Sympaticare Health LLC and Summit Park Acquisition Group LLC, finalized a deal for a 99-year-lease with option to buy all pertinent and personal property, $24 million for the nursing care center and $12 million for the hospital both in, “as is”, condition.

After $12 million in outstanding bonds, $8 million in legacy costs, $2 million in closing costs and $4 million in relocation costs for existing county departments, the county should make approximately $10 million.

Rockland County Executive Edwin Day said this money will be used to get the county back in good fiscal standing since, in January Rockland was $42,000 away from default.

“The idea here is to do two things; number one, which is not related to this to an extent, is to have government operations operate in the black, which we are. The Summit Park facility has been a drain on us, without that drain financially, we have the ability to operate in the black, which obviously, is a wonderful thing for tax payers. That will happen this year, I’ve told people that already. The continuing financial picture will improve if we continue on that path.” Day added. “We’re taking positive steps every day. This is another benchmark item that we have hit to ensure that the fiscal health of this county is sound and like I said we’re on a path, that will take time, but the goal here is to get us back in good fiscal condition and we will do that.”

Day promised that, above all, he will use any money he can for deficit reduction and that he is completely committed to that cause.

Part of the purchaser’s agreement is also to keep all current residents and patients who cannot be moved without their written consent. Also, the purchaser has agreed to consider all current employees for continued employment. Although the purchaser does not have to keep the current employees, as they do the patients and residents, Day and Braunstein assume they will need the existing employee to run the facility and that layoffs should not be a major issue.

The purchaser still needs to acquire a New York State Health Certificate of Need for both the nursing care center and hospital to be approved and has currently already applied for the CON for the nursing care center. Both must be applied for within 30 days of the PSA and once approved the nursing care center deal will close within 60 days and the hospital within 30 days.

The purchaser will then need to give the county 70 days notice to cease county operations before full takeover of the facilities.

Ulster County last year told its Golden Hill nursing home to a private operator and Orange County is currently enmeshed in a court battle over its attempts to sell its Valley View nursing home. All three counties have used the local development corporation mechanism to implement the transfers.
