Republican Candidate Arises to Run Against Councilman David Greenfield

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

hayonJoseph Hayon, a two-time GOP candidate for different Assembly districts, has a new target in mind this time around: Councilman David Greenfield.

His candidacy, Mr. Hayon told the Politicker this evening, is based off the view that Mr. Greenfield places party politics above the district. In particular, he cited Mr. Greenfield’s endorsement of his colleague, Councilman Lew Fidler, in an unsuccessful bid for the State Senate last year.

“David Greenfield put his Democratic Party before the people from the district,” said Mr. Hayon, who was active in organizing rabbis opposed to Mr. Fidler’s support for same-sex marriage in the race. “We need someone who is going to represent the people of the district first.”

Mr. Hayon narrowly lost a bid against Assemblyman Steve Cymbrowitz in 2010, and after redistricting, decided to challenge Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein in a far more Democratic district instead. He lost that race last year by a wide margin.

Reached by YWN, Mr. Hayon confirmed he is seeking to challenge Councilman David Greenfield in the upcoming November elections.  ”There are ED’s that I won in 2010 against the incumbent that overlap Mr. Greenfield’s council District,“ said Mr. Hayon. Adding, “Joe Lazar, despite his loss against Greenfield in 2010, came out strong in Borough Park. My base combined with Mr. Lazar’s base in Borough Park makes the seat extremely winnable.”

On May 26, The YWN reported that Mr. Hayon was mulling a run as Chaim Israel decided to drop his wish.

Anthony Weiner Gaining On Quinn; Leads Among Jewish Voters

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

weinerBarely a week in the race, Anthony Weiner has managed to comfortably position himself a close second to Christine Quinn. In the first Marist poll since his video announcement, Weiner places second with the support of 19% of the city’s registered Democrats. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn still leads but with only 24 percent, the lowest she has had in this race.

Weiner’s gains over Quinn has placed her just above the margin of error – 4.5%

“The Democratic primary for mayor remains wide open,” says Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, Director of The Marist College Institute for Public Opinion. “It is likely to come down to who can punch their ticket for the runoff.”

Among those who support Christine Quinn, 30% are strongly behind her, and 42% somewhat support her. 24% say they might vote differently, and 4% are undecided. Anthony Weiner’s supporters are a bit stronger in their backing. 43% strongly support him while 38% are somewhat supportive. Only 17% might vote differently.

“He may, in fact, be taking all the oxygen out of the room and depriving the second-tier candidates — de Blasio, Thompson, Liu, etc. — of getting a lot of attention they so desperately want,” Miringoff told WCBS 880.

The Marist poll found Bill de Blasio with 12 percent support, Bill Thompson with 11 percent support and John Liu with 8 percent. The remaining candidates are at 1% or lower.

Among Jewish voters, Mr. Weiner leads the pack with 23 percent support. Ms. Quinn is in second place with 17 percent support, down from 21% in Marist’s April poll and 39% in March.

Bill de Blasio garnered 16% of support among Jewish voters. However, in a hypothetical one-on-one match up against Ms. Quinn, Mr. de Blasio is the only candidate that would beat Quinn among Jewish voters – 39 to 36 percent.

The Donald Has Spent $1M For Research On Potential 2016 Bid

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

trump.jpgDonald Trump has spent more than $1 million on electoral research for a potential presidential run in 2016, The NY Post reported Monday.

Trump spoke at the Oakland County (Michigan) Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner earlier in May, which was attended by a crowd of 2,300 people.

“Everybody tells me, ‘Please run for president. Please run for president.’ I would be much happier if a great and competent person came along,” Trump reportedly told attendees. “I’d be happy if President Obama did a great job. I’m a Republican, but before anything, I love this country. I would love to see somebody come in who is going to be great.”

Trump told the Oakland County audience that Hillary will be the Democratic Party’s nominee in 2016, and warned that Republicans should be ready for a fight. “It seems that everybody who runs for office wants my support. I will say (the Republican Party) has to pick the right candidate because it will not be an easy election in three years. If they don’t pick the right person, it will be a landslide,” Trump said, according to Source Newspapers.

Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump, told the Post they commissioned the $1 million in research into Trump’s standing in each state, and to gauge those he would need to win over.

“The electoral research was commissioned. We did not spend $1 million on this research for it just to sit on my bookshelf,” Cohen said. “At this point Mr. Trump has not made any decision on a political run, but what I would say is that he is exactly what this country needs. The turnout at these political speeches indicates his following remains very strong and is growing.“

Rep. Peter King Boycotting NYS GOP Dinner For Inviting Sen. Cruz

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

king.jpgNew York Republican Congressman, Peter King is boycotting state GOP Lincoln dinner tomorrow night featuring Texas Senator Ted Cruz as guest speaker. Mr. King is baffled that fellow New York Republicans decided to honor a Texas senator, after opposing Hurricane Sandy disaster aid to New York.

“I don’t think we should be acknowledging people who are voting against us in our hour of need,” King told BuzzFeed of his decision to not attend the dinner.

“Once I found it was him I decided not to go. I don’t know if I would have gone or not because of scheduling things but that made it easy once I found out it was Ted Cruz,” King explained.

GOP chairman Ed Cox defended Cruz’s appearance at the dinner, arguing the Senator supported aid for Sandy victims, but that Senate Democrats had filled the bill with “pork,” and that’s why he had voted against it.

“Ted Cruz made it absolutely clear he was all for Sandy aid but he was against the pork which was stuffed in there by the Democrats and that’s what he was voting against,” Cox said. “This is very much going to be about growth and opportunity, showing the diversity that is the Republican Party here in New York State.”

Exclusive: Republican Mayoral Hopeful Joe Lhota Details His Positions on Jewish Issues

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

Joe-Lhota_Part of my interview with Republican mayoral hopeful, Joe Lhota:

Joseph Lhota is Jewish according to Jewish law. His maternal grandmother, Ita Steinberg, was born in the USA to a Russian Jewish family but married a Roman Catholic.

In an extensive interview, Mr. Lhota said he had been aware of the fact since he was a very young man, but wouldn’t use it as a tool to court Jewish votes. “I think that would be patronizing,” he said.

“I am extremely respectful of the Jewish community. You know, I am Christian. I think of Jews as my older brothers. I mean, there wouldn’t be Christianity without the Jewish religion. There is a direct connection between the two of them,” he added.

Asked about his personal relationship with the Jewish community, Mr. Lhota spoke of his time as Budget Director and deputy mayor in the Giuliani administration. “As budget director, I had great personal relationships with the folks at MET council, Agudath Israel, and various different COJO’s. Maintaining those relationships was instrumental in making sure day-care vouchers were made available to frum families. During the Giuliani administration, the Jewish community was understood. There was a reciprocal affection in the administration for the Jewish community,” Mr. Lhota noted.

YWN: How do you intend to earn the Jewish vote?

Lhota: “I had been spending, since mid-January–when I announced–a significant portion of every day fundraising, because I have to. I am running against a guy who is self-funding. I am also against people who have been fundraising for the last 3 and 4 years. So I have a lot to catch up,” Mr. Lhota said.

Speaking of the issues that are of great concern to the Jewish community, Mr. Lhota acknowledged that he still has a lot to learn. Nevertheless, he expressed great knowledge of the issues the individual in the Jewish community faces in daily life. “Every time I go to the Jewish community, the issues are the same. It’s about education. Not just public school education, but also how unfairly yeshivas are being treated in comparison to others. It’s about affordable housing. It’s about jobs. The unemployment rate in the Jewish community is not really talked about. And last but not the least, treating the community fairly and equitably,” Mr. Lhota said.

Mr. Lhota promised to fight hard for school choice vouchers. “The mayor can use the bully pulpit to advocate in Albany for private schools,” he said. “It’s important that our children are properly educated. The role of the government and the role of the state is making sure they have the proper textbooks, making sure they are secure and making sure that they have transportation. The children that go to parochial schools and yeshivas are residents and the children of taxpayers in the city of New York, and they are not getting their fair share,” he asserted.

“On the issue of tax credits, I have been in favor of that. I have yet to find a way that it would cover the full tuition, but some form of a tax credit, to give relief to parents who pay for property tax as well and all the other taxes in New York, and are also paying tuition,” Mr. Lhota proclaimed.

YWN: Would you pledge to fight for it and get it done in your first term?

Lhota: “Would I start fighting for it in my first term, using my bully pulpit? I will start doing it in my campaign. However, the mayor doesn’t have a vote in Albany. You can be rest assured I will fight as hard as I possibly can to make sure it happens in Albany. I couldn’t make a commitment that I will get it done in the first term.”

With regard to affordable housing, Mr. Lhota said he’s in favor of returning to the Mitchell-Lama program that gave tax credits to private developers as long as they remained in the program, and low-interest mortgages, subsidized by the federal, state, or New York City government. “We need to the same thing again. Those programs have lapsed. The government needs to partner with the private sector. The government shouldn’t build the houses, but provide the financial incentives to developers who build the housing, and keep the rentals affordable,” he said.

Mr. Lhota also raised the issue of City and State owned vacant properties, as a possible option to get more land to build affordable housing.

The third area is the federal government, Mr Lhota pointed out. “The federal government talks about closing most of the post offices. There are about 30 post offices in New York City they want to shut down. I want that property. Most post offices are surrounded by tall buildings. We would be able to take those buildings and use them as a location to put new housing, and coordinate that with some tax incentive plan.”

As 2016 Chatter Continues, Hillary Clinton To Join Twitter

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

truk-hillary-sunglassesOne thing Hillary Clinton has not done over the past four years, other than texts from Hillary, is connecting with the new generation of social media junkies. As the 2016 chatter continues, one indication Clinton’s team might lean toward the latter in 2016, according to Politico: She is likely to soon start posting to the soon-to-be-activated @hillaryclinton on Twitter, signaling her first personal foray into the medium outside her official State Department account, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Katie Stanton — a young Twitter executive, former Obama campaign tech team member and State Department internet guru — has joined the Clinton camp to develop a social media strategy.

“She wants to hear many voices, not simply retreads — a huge ‘Help Wanted’ sign for people who know what they’re doing,” a senior Democrat, who has worked with Clinton for years, told Politico.

“People who have worked for her. People who beat her. People who beat Romney. People who can think of the next big advance in data mining, the next big trend in social media. Names you’ve never heard, from outside of Washington. A mix of old and new, truly inclusive. To the extent there’s an inner circle, the diameter has increased by multiples to make room for new people with new skills and new perspectives. Instead of the Clinton Team of Rivals, just a good team. Even if she hasn’t known them from the dawn of time.”

As Weiner Joins The Table, Quinn Drops Out From Education Debate

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

quinnOrganizers of a mayoral forum on education issues scheduled this afternoon are fuming after City Council Speaker Christine Quinn pulled out at the last minute–allegedly, they charge, because she was worried she’d be subjected to attacks, Jill Colvin reports. Mr. Weiner has confirmed he’ll be joining his rivals at the table.

“Update: Christine Quinn Drops Out; Her Campaign Says it Does Not Want to do a Debate on Education,” the group said in a press release sent to reporters Monday. “In Quinn’s absence, Weiner and other candidates will be able to rebut her public positions on key education issues.”

“It’s unfortunate that Chris Quinn decided to back out of this important education debate at the last minute after agreeing to participate weeks ago,” Mr. Easton, a spokesman for the group, said in a statement. “Her campaign told us over Memorial Day weekend it doesn’t want to do a debate, yet Quinn herself has repeatedly said in public she will put her record up against anyone else’s in the mayoral race. Quinn is running away from an opportunity to defend her record on education. It’s a big mistake.”

According to Politicker, Quinn campaign spokesman Mike Morey rejected organizers’ debate-ducking argument.

“The organizers were informed last week we would not be able to make this one work,” Mr. Morey said in a statement. “We have never said to them or anyone else we would not debate education issues, in fact we’ve participated in two education debates this month alone, on top of a total of 44 debates and forums during the course of the campaign.”

Who Is Yoely Lhota?

Tuesday, May 28th, 2013

lhotaAs part of my extensive interview with Republican mayoral hopeful Joe Lhota, I felt the following story might interest you:

On the first night of Shavuot as I was walking home from Shul, I came across a cousin of mine who asked me what I do for a living. When I told him I cover the race for mayor he started asking me this and that etc. A friend following him, interrupted my conversation by stating that out of all the candidates, “Yoely Lhota” stands the best chance.  “I am telling you, this Yoely Lhota knows what he’s talking about. He was already in government. He’s a fiscal conservative. I trust him,” the stranger said.

As I was walking home, I was thinking why would this guy call Mr. Lhota, who’s real name is Joseph,  Yoely? As I put in some deeper thought, I came to the conclusion that when uttered in one breath, Mr. Lhota’s full name sounds like Joel Lhota, especially among Hasidim, whose every second or third child, if born to a Satmar family in the 80′s and 90′s, is called Joel (Yoely in Yiddish slang).

When I recounted the story during my sit down with Mr. Lhota, he laughed. “Call me Yoely from now on,” he jokingly said.

Republican Party Ought To Be ‘Closed For Repairs,’ Says Former Presidential Nominee

Monday, May 27th, 2013

bob doleBob Dole, who ran against President Bill Clinton in 1996 and was the leader of Senate Republicans for much of the 1980s and 90s, slammed the GOP for excessive obstructionism and for failing to convey a forward-looking agenda during an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”

“I think they ought to put a sign on the [Republican] national committee doors that says ‘closed for repairs’ until New Year’s Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas,” Dole said.

“Could people like Bob Dole, even Ronald Reagan, could you make it in today’s Republican Party?” Wallace asked.

“Reagan wouldn’t have made it [in the modern GOP]. Certainly Nixon couldn’t have made it, because he had ideas,” Mr. dole responded. “We might have made it, but I doubt it.”

Upstate Race Of The Year- The Rockland County Executive Election

Monday, May 27th, 2013

rocklandraceThis is the most significant election in a lifetime, and the Jewish vote is critical. No, we are not talking about the NYC mayoral race or the presidential race. The important election is non other than the race of Rockland County Executive. Current Rockland County Exec Scott Vanderhoef is not running for re-election.

The Democratic candidates are  County Legislator Ilan Schoenberger, former Spring Valley Justice David Fried, Dagan Lacorte and Vladimir Leon. The Republican candidate is County Legislator Ed Day.

Our first featured report on the race is based on a dozen conversations YWN had conducted with voters, local activists and machers in the Hasidic and Orthodox community.

Ilan Schoenberger, a secular Jew, is the acting chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee, and the very person who year after year was responsible for advancing flawed budgets from the County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef. He’s viewed as a favorite among insiders, due to the connections he had managed to establish, over the years, with every community in Rockland county.

David Fried is another long time Democrat. Mr. Fried  served in the county legislature from 2003 to 2007.  He ran for the open State Assembly seat in 2006 but lost to Ellen Jaffee. Fried was then selected in 2008, by  Sheriff James Kralik’s, a Republican, to serve as a new public safety advocate to the part-time position of Spring Valley justice. Mr. Fried, also served as a presidential advance aide for the Clinton Administration from 1998 to 2001. He earned Bill Clinton and Rep. Nita Lowey’s endorsements.

Mr. Fried courted the anti Hasidic group – ‘Preserve Ramapo’ for an endorsement since Mr. Schoenberger had earned the support of the Hasidim as a bloc vote. In exchange, Mr. Fried already wrote a letter asking the local zoning board to block a major development favored by the Jewish business community, but Fried – himself Jewish – has some support among the Orthodox, so he was rejected as an opportunist.

In the end, the Preserve Ramapo group, whose official platform is to preserve the environment in Town of Ramapo, endorsed the Republican candidate, Ed Day, who’s been described by Yossi Gestetner, a resident of Rockland, as “an anti-Abortion Tea-Party type Republican.”

The third candidate in the race is the mayor of Suffern Dagan Lacorte. Lacorte doesn’t have ties to the haredi leadership. Mayor Lacorte is Jewish,  is secular, and regularly attends services at Chabad of Suffern. As an outsider, with a scoffed up campaign chest of $650K, Mr. Lacorte is seeking to bite into Schonberger’s Jewish voting bloc, relying on a traditional run campaign. In an interview with JP Updates, Mr. LaCorte said: “I am not a member of Preserve Ramapo and will not accept their endorsement.” Mr. Lacorte scored some points in the Orthodox Jewish community by this declaration, according to some insiders who spoke to YWN.

In a video released as he threw his hat in the ring, Lacorte dropped the name of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and also touted the fact that he managed to pass a budget that came in under the governor’s two percent property tax cap – a particularly popular initiative in the NYC suburbs, which have the highest property taxes in the state and the nation. Lacorte’s supporters also note that Schoenberger voted to raise the County property taxes by 100 percent. To which Mr. Schoenberger’s supporters rebuff that attack, by pointing out that all districts voted to raise the School property tax, which was a bigger bill than the County property tax. If tax hikes are permitted, where’s the distinction, they argue.

And there’s a fourth candidate, Vladimir Leon, who appears solely in the race to get revenge on Fried for his political exploitation of the Haitian community in Spring Valley. He called on Fried to drop out after the contributions from Moshe stern were uncovered by Newsday.

Right now, the race is between Schoenberger as the favorite, and Fried and Lacorte. Both rivals must garner at least 10 percent of the Hasidic vote, respectively, to snatch away from Mr. Schoenberger his assumed victory.

Mr. Lacorte’s supporters believe that his 12-1 money advantage over Mr. Fried and his campaign running as an outsider will likely prevail. Recently, Mr. Lacorte got the endorsement of Labor union Local 754, the only construction trade union local whose territory is exclusively Rockland County. Local 754 has 350 members.

Mr. Fried, a likeable guy who had only raised around $50,000, was also harmed by the reports that he received $10K from government informant and admitted felon Moses “Mark” Stern for his failed 2006 run for New York State Assembly. When told of the contributions by Newsday, he promised to give the money to charity. “In light of Mr. Stern’s despicable actions, it is wholly right to donate that money to charity in order to avoid even the appearance of impropriety,” he said.

The Rockland Democrats meet for their nominating convention Thursday night, but as of now, party leaders do not plan a vote on the nomination and there will likely be a September primary.

Some Orthodox Jews Reject Weiner’s Candidacy; Fear Muslim Brotherhood Connection

Monday, May 27th, 2013

Some political pundits believe Anthony Weiner has a door open in the more socially conservative Orthodox Jewish community, since he’s the only Jew in the race.

However, judging the cross-section of callers who called in to to Assemblyman Dov Hikind’s weekly radio show Saturday night, Mr. Weiner still has some work to do–and not only because of the scandal, Colin Campbell reports.

Ya’akov from Midwood, for example, espoused a conspiracy theory that Mr. Weiner is not technically Jewish because his mother was not. In an interview with Shimon Gifter, his  mother firmly stated that she is.

“Truth being told, halachically Weiner is not Jewish,” the caller asserted. “His mother had a non-valid conversion so he’s not a member of our community, unbeknownst to many people.”

He want on to say Mr. Weiner, who is married to Huma Abedin–a top Hillary Clinton aide, whom Rep. Michele Bachmann and a handful of other conservative Republicans allege has ties to the militant Muslim Brotherhood–would “invite the Muslim Brotherhood into City Hall because … his wife’s brothers and sisters living in Saudi Arabia are all members of the Muslim Brotherhood and Sisterhood. I don’t think we want to see that in this city.”

“I have yet to meet a Jewish person who has adopted the Islamic community to the extent that Weiner has,” George from Manhattan piled on. “That’s not what a Jewish person does.”

Listen to the audio here:

Mr. Hikind did not dispute his guests’ comments that night, Campbell notes.

For her part, Tzvi was upset at Mr. Hikind for even discussing Mr. Weiner on his show. “I’m disappointed in the subject that you are talking about: this piece of dirt,” he declared. “Shut him out! He shouldn’t be on the radio and you shouldn’t talk about it … He’s a pervert; he’s not worth even to talk about.”

UTJ MK Gafni Warns: Missiles Will Fall On Tel Aviv, If IDF Draft Bill Becomes Law

Monday, May 27th, 2013

gafniKnesset Member Moshe Gafni (UTJ) warned the government, in a speech at a weekly non-confidence motion, that missiles will fall on Tel Aviv if The Knesset passes the IDF draft bill. The bill, once signed into law, requires Yeshiva students to join the army at the age of 21 and sanction those who refuse to join military or civil service.

“I want to tell you, I am a believer. We are playing with fire,” said MK Gafni, according to a video published by Kikar Shabbat. “Since the government started to hurt those who study the Torah, Syria became close, missiles began to be directed to Tel Aviv.”

MK Gafni elaborated that if you harm the Yeshivas not only will missiles fall on Tel Aviv but also Israel’s credit rating will plummet.

As a Brooklynite,Mr. de Blasio had been counting on landing a large chunk of the ethnic white vote that hasn’t warmed to Ms. Quinn. “Now they have another place to go,” a political analyst told the Post. “De Blasio’s path was difficult before. Now it’s extra difficult.”

Israel – Netanyahu Denies Widespread Rumor He Wants To Succeed Peres As President

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu holds a Cabinet meeting in JerusalemThe rumor is that Benjamin Netanyahu wants the Knesset to extend Shimon Peres’ term as president of Israel for two extra years, until the summer of 2016, which will be a year before the next scheduled general election, Yossi Verter reported, Saturday.

According to the report in Haaretz, Netanyahu will announce that he will not seek a fourth term as prime minister, but a seven-year term ‏as president. For Bibi to become president and Sara the president’s wife, they have to keep Peres in the President’s Residence for two more years. That will require an amendment to the Basic Law on the President of the State.

In a meeting with Likud Ministers, Sunday morning, Netanyahu announced that he has no desire to succeed Shimon Peres as President of Israel, According to Amit Segal, Channel 2.

Guest Post: Problem With IRS Head ‘Pleading The Fifth’

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

ywe[By: Jake Stern]

Lois Lerner, who heads the tax-exempt division of the IRS (the one that allegedly targeted right-wing groups), refused to testify to Congress yesterday, other than saying (six different ways) that she did nothing wrong or illegal. Then she pleaded the fifth.

That’s funny. I thought the fifth amendment was to protect people from incriminating themselves. Strange for someone who’s not a criminal to use it. She claimed that the fifth amendment is in fact meant to protect the innocent. Protect the innocent? From what? Is she worried she may accuse herself of committing a crime she knows she didn’t commit?

Some in Congress say she waived her right to the fifth when she claimed to be innocent. Sounds logical to me.

But her lawyer says a “brief” declaration of innocence does not waive her right to plead the fifth. Aha. Brief. Okay, so how long does she have to spend telling us that she’s innocent before she loses her right to not testify on grounds that she’s guilty?

My real gripe with the IRS, though, is not the crime they committed. It’s the stupidity. They’re supposed to be collecting tax dollars. They should be going after Democrats, not Republicans. Republicans pay their taxes (albeit begrudgingly). But as Tim Geithner, Charlie Rangel, Eric Holder, and many others will tell you, lots of democrats who preach about taxes do not actually pay them. (Granted in Holder’s case it was property taxes, not in the jurisdiction of IRS).

This is fiscally irresponsible and foolish. You want to collect revenue, the last place to look is at conservative groups. The IRS should target ACORN and Planned Parenthood. Or better yet, since they’re spending so much time on Capitol Hill these days NOT testifying, why don’t people like Lois Lerner target Charlie Rangel? He’s sitting right there across from her. And he has good reason to invoke the fifth.

Jake Stern.

UPDATED: Chaim Israel Decides Against City Council Run

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

chaim israelThis morning, Chaim Israel, who was mulling a City Council run against Councilman David Greenfield, penned, in an unusual step, a statement on a news site denying our report.

“In my effort to squelch these rumors I would like to state unequivocally and unambiguously that I never declared or announced that I am a candidate. I am not a candidate,” Mr. Israel wrote.

We, at the YWN, stand by our report that Mr. Israel was mulling a City Council run and that he was seeking the support of the Brooklyn GOP county committee. Speaking to YWN, Joseph Hayon said he had spoken to Mr. Israel, who  told him he has decided not to pursue a council bid.

According to our sources, a known political junkie went up to Mr. Israel’s son, on Shabbos, asking him why his father is committing this suicide mission. “He’s only considering a run and speaking about it. He has not declared he’s a candidate,” his son responded. “But you know, that if he decides to run he’ll win,” he added with great confidence.

Our source adds that the Agudath Israel’s new leadership, who Mr. Israel would be relying on their support, also sent a message to Chaim Israel warning him to reconsider and that if he decides to run he’s on his own. The message was also delivered to the Greenfield camp.

Joseph Hayon, who initially was pushing Mr. Israel to run, told YWN that he’ll decide about a council run in the near future.

Audio: Mr. Hikind denies any involvement in Mr. Israel’s  City Council exploratory campaign.
