Shas Seeking Broad-Based Coalition

Monday, July 28th, 2008

shas2.jpgShas leader Minister Eli Yishai is busy drumming up support for a broad-based government that agrees on social issues, primarily the party’s monthly child allowance payments, which is of paramount importance to Shas lawmakers as well as the party’s rabbinical council.

Yishai views the current political situation as a timely occurrence, hoping to introduce his social agenda cabinet following the Kadima Party primaries, at which time a new coalition will be established, or alternatively, the nation will move to general elections. He now realizes that his party does not have a chance of persuading the current Olmert-led government of accepting the child allowance payment issue which met with strong opposition in the Finance Ministry.

He hopes to persuade parties to get on to the Shas bandwagon, which demands support for the monthly child allowance as a prerequisite. Parties would also submit their top social issues, which would be incorporated the broad-based coalition.

Yishai has already met with or sent feelers to right-wing and religious parties, including Agudas Yisrael, National Union, NRP and Yisrael Beitenu. He views a coalition bloc of over 30 votes, which would represent a significant political entity in the 120-seat Knesset.

He explains to the potential coalition partners that such a body would determine if a new government would come to power under the leadership of the newly-elected Kadima leader or if the nation goes to the polls to elect a new Knesset.

Yishai remains adamant on the monthly child allowance issue, telling the daily Haaretz his party will not join any new coalition that does not agree to implement the demands for the increased monthly child payment. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Silver: Need To Act Now To Address Home Heating Crisis For New Yorkers This Winter

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has called on Governor David Paterson to join the Assembly to act now to address a home heating crisis for New Yorkers this winter.

“We are quickly approaching a severe home heating crisis in our state. I cannot overstate the magnitude of this problem, which will impact millions of New Yorkers in the coming winter,” Silver wrote in a July 18 letter to the Governor. He noted that the price of home heating oil has risen 75.5 percent in the past year.

The Assembly Majority developed a comprehensive plan to address the crisis, including:

*$550 million to enhance the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), so that the program can raise the income eligibility level to 80 percent of median family income from the current 60 percent. Under this proposal, a family of four would be eligible for HEAP assistance if household income was up to $55,500, instead of the current $41,600.
*$250 million for energy conservation measures, including weatherization and home energy efficient programs.
the plan was approved by the Assembly in June.

Funding for the plan would be generated through:

*A two percent gross receipts tax on large oil companies, which are currently experiencing a huge growth in revenues.
*A retroactive measure to recapture windfall profits from when sales tax on gasoline was capped at two dollars in 2005.
*Prohibiting oil companies from passing along the additional costs to consumer through increases in prices.

Silver noted that President Bush is calling for a $570 million cut in federal support for HEAP. Under the President’s proposal, New York State would lose over $70 million.

“I know you are aware of the severity of the problem and recognize the need for action,” Silver wrote to Governor Paterson. “We should work together to meet our obligation to address this issue.”

YWN Eretz Yisrael Motzei Shabbos News Roundup – 7/19/08

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

SECURITY/DEFENSE:
• Border police at Checkpoint 109 arrested two Sharon area residents found to be concealing a Kalashnikov assault rifle (AK-47) in their vehicle. They were turned over to security officials for interrogation.

• Soldiers opened fire after detecting two “images” moving along the Syrian border. A Syrian national was killed and a second man injured. Two residents of the northern community of Majdal Shams were arrested in what appears to have been a drug smuggling operation.

• 7 soldiers serving in an Atlit area base were brought in for questioning. It appears that an Arab family entered a closed military zone to fish and when they refused to comply with instructions to leave the area, a scuffle erupted. The soldiers were questioned regarding the altercation. IDF officials report that the soldiers involved were guarding the base and they are not members of elite naval commando unit stationed there.

POLITICS, DOMESTIC & MORE:
• Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyah released a message that he will not compromise on a single prisoner, hinting to increased demands towards Israel’s securing the release of Gilad Shalit.

• IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi is leaving for Washington on motzei Shabbos for a one-week working visit. He will hold meetings with the vice president, chief of joint staffs, and other senior officials.

• Iranian official announces that in upcoming talks, his country will not discuss demands to halt halting its nuclear program.

• Samir Kuntar in the coming weeks will travel to Syria to meet Bashar al-Assad, reportedly to thank the Syrian leader for his role in obtaining his release.

Coffins to be Carried by Fellow Soldiers

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The coffins of Ehud Goldwasser HY”D and Eldad Regev HY”D will be carried today, Thursday, by fellow IDF reservists.

Their fellow reservists have been involved in efforts to obtain their release since they were taken captive two years ago, and today, they will dawn their uniforms and return to reserve duty, to pay their last respects to the two fallen comrades.

“We all prayed. We so badly wanted to see them return home alive,” said Rafi Agronov on Wednesday, a platoon commander in their company.

Some of the reservists will carry the coffins, while others will stand next to the bereaved families, giving them support during this most difficult day.

Ehud will be laid to rest on Thursday morning at 10:00AM in the Nahariya Military Cemetery followed by the funeral of Eldad at 1:00PM, leaving the family home on Yissachar Kaplan Street in Kiryat Motzkin, traveling to the Haifa Military Cemetery for burial, scheduled to take place at 2:00PM.

IDF Chief Rabbi Brigadier-General Avichai Ronsky explained the families will sit shiva following the kvura since until yesterday, there were never certain if their sons were dead or alive. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

MK Avshalom Vilan: All the Generals Paid the Price

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

MK (Meretz) Avshalom Vilan told Israel TV on Wednesday that regardless of one’s political affiliation, we must all realize that the soldiers must be brought home, even when the cost is high as in today’s case.

Vilan, a former combatant in the elite Sayeret Matkal commando force, explained “all the past prime ministers who were generals, Rabin and Sharon paid heavily for the return of soldiers and this is the way it must continue.”

MK (National Union) Rabbi Binyamin Elon disagreed, stating emphatically we may not bring home bodies at any cost and the current trend is harmful to the security of the nation.

UN Officials Have Completed Identification Process

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

11:30AM IL: United Nations officials a short time ago have completed their inspection of the remains of IDF reservists Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev.

The bodies are now being turned over to Israel by representatives of the Red Cross. Israeli officials will now begin the identification process as well. It is expected the process will take more time than the UN’s process since Israel is seeking absolute positive identification, a process that will involve members of the IDF Rabbinate. MK Eldad: The Enemy Must be Declared “Dead Men”

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

11:26AM IL: MK (National Union) Prof. Aryeh Eldad stated that Israel must put an abrupt end to the celebrations on the Lebanese side of the border, stating that by Hizbullah’s own admission, soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser were taken alive, but now we see they are retuned in coffins.

Eldad stated it is incumbent on the Government of Israel to declare Hassan Nasrallah and those responsible ‘marked for death” and we should not rest until they are no longer among the living, thereby completing that which we failed to accomplish in the Second Lebanon War.  (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

A Day of Joyous Celebration in Gaza

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

11:20AM IL: In Hamas-controlled Gaza, today is one of joyous celebration as residents are dancing in the streets, distributing candies and sweets to children. The residents are filled with joy upon seeing the IDF soldiers returned in coffins, while five terrorists walk across the border into the waiting arms of Hizbullah representatives.

In the meantime, IDF forces along the southern and northern borders remain increasingly vigilant against any possible attempted attack which intelligence community officials report may follow the completion of the prisoner exchange deal. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Brother of Slain Policeman Calls Deal “Contemptible”

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Yoram Shachar, a brother of slain policeman Eliyahu Shachar, one of the victims of Samir Kuntar’s 1979 terror attack, called today’s prisoner exchange deal “contemptible”.

Yoram stated, “I share in the pain and grief of the Regev and Goldwasser families, and I believe that sometime in the future, they too will understand why this deal is contemptible and why it should not have been approved. This is a most painful day for the Shachar family. Our pain has once again returned.”  (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Boim: There is a Sigh of Relief

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Minister Ze’ev Boim, one of three ministers voting against the Regev-Goldwasser prisoner exchange deal stated that while today is a sad day, there is a measure of relief associated with the closure of this most difficult process.

Boim stated that undoubtedly, this must be viewed as an “unbalanced deal that will have an impact on future deals” and it is “a strategic victory for Hizbullah.” (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

MK Eitam: Soldiers Must Know We Will Return Them Home

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

MK Effie Eitam, a former IDF brigadier-general, told the media on Wednesday morning that today is a painful one for the bereaved families, the IDF and the nation.

Eitam stated it is imperative that anyone putting on an IDF uniform understand that if such an occurrence is repeated in the future, everything possible will be done to bring him home – leaving no stone unturned.

Unfortunately, he added, the current reality will only serve to strengthen our enemy and encourage future attempts to abduct soldiers. The parades that we will witness in Lebanon “will be an embarrassment” he stated, pointing out that Israel must begin coming to terms with her enemies, labeling Hassan Nasrallah and Hizbullah “barbaric”, stating we must begin using the word as we must contemplate our future actions, and a justified war against a barbaric enemy. Neighbors Lighting Yahrzeit Lights for Falling Soldiers

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Neighbors and friends are outside the Kiryat Motzkin home of the Regev family, each making his/her way with a yahrzeit light which is being lit outside the family home in a showing of solidarity. Hundreds of area residents are gathering outside the home, seemingly to comfort the bereaved family and perhaps, one another.

Cries of pain and horror could be heard from inside the Regev home of the Regevs after they viewed the film footage of their son being returned in a coffin, confirming their worst fears. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Noam Shalit Sends his Love to Regev & Goldwasser Families

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

As the families of fallen IDF soldiers Eldad Regev HY”D and Ehud Goldwasser HY”D digest the painful news, that their beloved are indeed dead, Mr. Noam Shalit, the father of captive soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit, sends his love and embraces the families during this most difficult time.

Gilad Shalit is believed to be in Hamas-controlled Gaza. He was abducted in a border attack in southern Israel on June 25, 2006. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Fellow Combatants Pay Their Respects to Fallen Colleagues

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Despite the obvious pain over the realization that Ehud and Eldad are indeed gone forever, Shloime Laniado, a close friend and longtime colleague, who served with the two in the army, told reporters that this moment is a most difficult one. Most of their fellow combatants, who are in the IDF’s Schrage Camp to pay their respects to their former colleagues, are unable to speak to the media.

Shloime however is able to muster the internal fortitude, telling the media “the past two years, the handling of the event, shows us who we are up against, It is a clear message of just who Israel’s enemies are.”

Laniado stated he and his colleagues remain committed to serving in reserve duty, perhaps more so than in the past, and they will continue doing their utmost to protect the nation against the Hizbullahs of the world.

In the meantime, preparations for victory celebrations are taking place in Lebanon, as well as in Hamas-controlled Gaza, where presumably, IDF soldier Gilad Shalit remains captive since June 25, 2006. One can only possibly imagine the pain and concern being experienced by the Shalit family as they witness the return of the coffins of Regev and Goldwasser after two years.

Security preparations have been made for the arrival of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in Rosh HaNikra, although his arrival is still in the realm of uncertainty at present. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Blair Cancels Visit to Gaza

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

11:57AM IL: Ruti Winterstein, a spokeswoman for Quartet Mideast envoy Tony Blair announced a short time ago that Blair will be canceling his planned visit to Hamas-controlled Gaza, which was to have taken place today.

Blair would have become the highest-ranking diplomat to visit Gaza since it came under the current Hamas regime. He announced he was hoping to meet with officials towards advancing a Quartet plan for additional funding of projects in Gaza.

Apparently the cancellation is the result of credible specific threats and not due to general concerns for Blair’s security in Gaza.

The Quartet is made up of the United States, European Union, Russia and the United Nations. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)
