Sunday Times: America Leaning Towards a Green Light for Iranian Offensive

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

gl.jpgAccording to a Times-online report, US President George W. Bush is leaning towards giving Israel a green light for an offensive strike against Iran should all avenues of negotiations be exhausted.

Quoting senior Pentagon officials, the report states that Bush has already given Jerusalem an “amber light” as it becomes increasingly obvious diplomatic efforts will not lead to Iran abandoning nuclear enrichment efforts. Bush, the article adds is willing to approve and Israeli offensive despite the fact that his most senior military advisors oppose such a move, fearing the political, economic and military repercussions.

“Amber means get on with your preparations, stand by for immediate attack and tell us when you’re ready,” the official said.

The senior Pentagon source is quoted as adding Mr. Bush is really “preoccupied with the nuclear threat against Israel,” and while the Bush administration will not launch a strike against Iran, the source adds, “it really comes down to the Israelis.”

Among the concerns of senior military officials in the United States, an Israeli attack would endanger American forces stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan, both in range of an Iranian retaliatory strike.

In her response to last week’s Iranian long and medium range missile launches, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice stated the event was “evidence that the missile threat is not an imaginary one.”

A senior Iranian official said yesterday that Iran would destroy Israel and 32 American military bases in the Middle East in response to any attack.

By all accounts, the upcoming American elections and the corruption cloud surrounding Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are two factors that weigh seriously in the decision-making process. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

12:55PM IL – Update on the Wounded in Jerusalem Terror Attack

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

According to MDA spokesman Ron Ratner, the terrorist slammed into a number 13 bus, flipping it over to the side. The driver of that bus was injured light-to-moderately. There were 35 passengers on the bus, some counted among the seriously injured.

The second bus hit was a number 60 bus, driven by an Arab driver according to Ratner. He reported the driver understood what was taking place and was able to implement an evasive maneuver, resulting in only a number of scratches. The driver told police he saw the tractor “smash everything in its way, without stopping, striking one vehicle after another. I shouted to a security guard from Israel Land’s Authority nearby, ‘Uzi shoot him!! It’s a terror attack! But he was too scared to fire at the terrorist, permitting him to continue’”.

Prof. Yonatan Halevy, the director of Shaare Zedek Medical Center reports one victim was pronounced dead on arrival, the result of massive chest injuries. In addition, there are 16 other, most appearing light and light-to-moderate at first glance. One is listed in moderate condition.

MDA sent one pager message stating 30 injures, with 4 in moderate condition and 2 serious. Channel 1 TV is reporting 4 dead, quoting Jerusalem Chief Franco.

ZAKA Chief Yehuda Meshi-Zahav reports that as of about 12:45, most of the victims were evacuated from the scene but there is still one being treated who was extricated from under a bus. ZAKA volunteers are now beginning to tend to the dead on the scene.

Terrorist Managed to Drive Hundreds of Meters 12:45PM IL

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Police attempting to trace the steps of the terrorists indicate that according to eyewitness reports, he drove on Sarei Yisrael Street and turned left onto Jaffa Street. The attack occurred at approximately 12:00 noon. The terrorist smashed into a number of cars, crushing some, and then into two buses, turning them on their side.

Rescue workers on the scene believe there may be victims trapped under the remains of the buses, but report the passengers on board were successfully removed from the vehicles. It appears the driver of the tractor, the terrorist, was shot dead at close range by a police Yassam (SWAT) member.

EMS response was city-wide as MDA declared a multi-casualty incident shortly after the reports came into their central dispatch system. Hatzolah, ZAKA and other volunteer units, on motorcycles and in other vehicles responded from all areas of the city, working their way to the city center, just a little over a block from the city’s central bus station.

Area hospitals were placed on standby to receive the wounded, especially Hadassah Ein Kerem’s trauma center, which usually takes the most serious cases, along with Shaare Zedek Hospital’s trauma unit.

At present, there is much conflicting information but it appears to be in excess of 20 injured, with some listed in serious condition. There are a number of victims who were declared dead on the scene.

As we go to print, Jerusalem Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby confirms the terrorist was a resident of eastern Jerusalem who was “known to police”. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Nabil Amr: Rafiach Crossing Being Opened by Egypt

Monday, June 30th, 2008

12:45PM IL: As the family of Gilad Shalit awaits the government’s next move, PA official Nabil Amr announced on Tuesday afternoon that Egypt will be opening the Rafiach border crossing for two days. The move is intended to permit Gazans in Sinai to return home and Gazans in Gaza to head to Egypt for medical services.

Israeli officials such as the Defense Ministry’s Amos Gilad continue to release statements to reassure the family of Shalit that the Regev-Goldwasser deal approved by the cabinet on Sunday will help efforts to obtain Gilad’s release, not hamper them.

Responding to fears from Shalit family members fearing an agreement on a Gaza ceasefire that excludes Gilad’s release, government officials assured them that until such time that Gilad is released, the Gaza Crossing will remain closed. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Cabinet Continues to Deliberate Hizbullah Deal

Sunday, June 29th, 2008

2:03PM IL: The cabinet at this hour continues to deliberate the proposed prisoner release deal between Israel and Hizbullah that would result in the release of the bodies of soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev. A vote is expected this afternoon.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert a short time ago told cabinet ministers at the weekly meeting that the soldiers are dead, of this Israel is certain, adding no information regarding their condition has been obtained from Hizbullah.

Olmert told ministers that after weighing all the pros and cons, he has decided to support the move, which is contrary to recommendations of the heads of the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet) and the Mossad Intelligence Agency, both fearing the release of Samir Kuntar will send the wrong message to terrorists and possible encourage future efforts to kidnap soldiers. The ministers are each being given an opportunity to speak, explaining their position. A vote on the prisoner exchange is expected in the next hour or two.

Prior to the weekly meeting, the prime minister did not disclose his position on the proposed deal. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Major Blaze in Orchidea Hotel in Eilat – UPDATED BELOW

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

fire9_m11.jpg5:07PM IL: A major fire is raging out of control in Eilat’s Orchidea Hotel on Thursday afternoon, compelling firefighters to evacuate the entire hotel. There are a number of injuries being reported, all apparently light.

The blaze seems to be concentrated in the area of uppers suites and firefighters are now still working to contain the blaze. There appears to be significant damage to upper floors of the hotel.

The unseasonably hot and dry weather is making the work of firefighters exceptionally difficult and the blaze at this time is not being declared under control.

5:19PM IL: At least ten people have been treated for smoke inhalation and some have been transported to a hospital. One guest explains that it appears a small brush fire from the heat spread to the hotel and it got out of control rather quickly. It should be pointed out that the facility is constructed of wood, not cement as is the case in most Israeli construction.

Mayor Mike: I’ve Never Been a Big Believer in Vouchers

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

bloomberg budget1.jpgMayor Michael Bloomberg hit a sour note by saying he’s not big on the idea of private school vouchers, at an education conference hosted by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

New York parents have been given more choice among public and charter schools, Bloomberg said, but he said nothing about vouchers until asked during the question-and-answer period following his comments.

Bloomberg replied that he didn’t seek vouchers because it would be politically impossible to get approval from his state’s legislature and such a fight would distract from other efforts to improve the city’s schools.

“I’ve never been a big believer in vouchers,” Bloomberg added. He said that’s because “what invariably will happen with vouchers is those who are sending their kids to private schools already will take up most of the vouchers.”

He said government’s major job is to provide quality public schools because that’s where most children will go with or without vouchers.

Los Angeles: Top Airport Security Expert In Israel To Inspect LAX

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

ben_gurion.jpgIsrael’s top airport security official will make periodic reviews of anti-terrorist measures at Los Angeles International Airport under an agreement signed Friday by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

The pact, formalizing an arrangement begun nearly two years ago, will send the Israeli official, Nahum Liss, and two colleagues to Los Angeles for regular inspections as $1,000-per-day consultants. The officials work for the authority that operates Ben-Gurion International Airport.

Calling Ben-Gurion the world’s safest airport, Villaraigosa said the agreement “is going to put us in a position to learn . . . to implement state-of-the-art technology and other measures to help us secure our airport.”

Starting in the fall, Liss and his team will visit LAX about twice a year and provide additional consulting by e-mail, officials on both sides said. The team made a preliminary examination of LAX in October 2006.

The deal is part of an effort by city officials to upgrade security at LAX, which is considered the state’s No. 1 terrorist target and has been singled out by the Al Qaeda network.

Several Los Angeles officials said they were impressed by the unobtrusive character of Israel’s airport security and said they want to replicate it.

Olmert to Meet to Discuss Military Operation in Gaza

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will on Tuesday meet with Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak to discuss a possible major military incursion into Hamas-controlled Gaza.

Last week, prior to Shavuos, senior ministers indicated a major military response in Gaza was imminent. Olmert was quoted as saying “an IDF operation is not far off.” The statements followed another week of rocket-fire, which claimed one life and left many others physically and emotionally injured, not to mention extensive property damage.

The frequency of attacks against Greater Sderot Area residents continues to increase, as does the range of rockets being fired from Gaza as terrorists continue to develop more advanced weaponry.  (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

Uri Messer: I held $350,000 in Cash for Olmert

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Uri Messer, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s former law partner, told police investigators that he held $350,000 in cash in his safe for Olmert, not $150,000 as has been reported to date.

The funds that were not unused he explained  were passed to Olmert’s personal assistant Shula Zaken in mid-2006, shortly after the state comptroller launched one of the investigations against Olmert regarding alleged illegal activities pertaining to investments.

One of the questions that will be posed to the prime minister is if the funds were given in anticipation of political favors, pointing to his abusing his ministerial post. Police for the time begin are viewing the sizeable sums of cash as payoffs and bribes.

While Messer did tell police of the large sum, he is not totally cooperative and is not spelling out how the funds reached the prime minister and if all or exactly how much was intended for him. There are yet many unanswered questions.

This was the larger fund that Olmert kept in addition to a smaller petty cash source, fed by Talansky and others like him. At one point, $23,000 was converted to new Israeli shekels and given to a close friend of Olmert, Avraham Hirschson, the former finance minister who last week was indicted on charges of fraud, accepting bribes, and breech of trust among other charges. He is suspected of making off with over NIS 2.5 million.

At present, police have learned of $150,000 given to Olmert from Talansky; $300,000 that was taken from Talansky’s accounts for Olmert; $300,000 that came from a currently unknown source to cover the earlier $300,000 taken from Talansky.

The talk of envelopes containing sums of cash is actually the tip of the iceberg and police are more concerned with what appears to have been a major operation with Olmert in his different local and national government capacities treated himself to enormous sums of money.

At present, Talansky is just a piece in the puzzle that points to a major money operation involving enormous sums, bribery and other illegal activities. Messer does appear to be turning into a major state witness against the prime minister and police are seeking to understand if Olmert did indeed act on behalf of supporters who at different times gave him large sums of money.

At present it appears the prime minister filled his pockets generously in return for using the power of his various government positions to assist others, at times, contrary to state interests. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)
