Peres Meeting Party Leaders on Monday

Monday, October 27th, 2008

President Shimon Peres on Monday will continue meeting with heads of Knesset factions towards arriving at his decision, if he will empower another MK to attempt to form a coalition government during the next three weeks, or inform Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik that the national will hold elections.

In the meantime, Kadima Chairman MK Yoel Hasson on Monday, the first day of the Knesset winter session, will introduce a bill to dissolve the Knesset in the hope of bringing about elections in 90 days instead of 111 days, which would be the case if another MK is permitted to attempt to form a coalition government.

Addressing the opening session will be Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Knesset Speaker Itzik and opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu.

Hamas Calling for Elections Now

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Hamas officials in Gaza on Sunday released statements calling for elections in PA (Palestinian Authority) autonomous areas throughout Yehuda and Shomron. Hamas of late has stated on numerous occasions that it views Abu Mazen’s term as ending in January, and does not plan to recognize his leadership post after that time.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyah is working to expand his powerbase to areas in Yehuda and Shomron, currently under Abu Mazen and his Fatah Party.

Media Focuses on Extremists, Not Home Demolition

Monday, October 27th, 2008

The extremists, whose remarks were aired on Israel Radio and other stations throughout the day on Sunday, gave the establishment the required ammunition to turn the nation’s focus on the ‘extremist Jews of Chevron’, shifting all of the media spotlight away from the tragic demolition of the Federman home near Kiryat Arba.

The unacceptable remarks were also condemned by MK (National Union) Prof. Aryeh Eldad, Danny Dayan, who heads the Council of Jewish Communities in Yehuda & Shomron, and other prominent leaders and officials affiliated with the political right-wing. This did not suffice and the government is having a media festival as it attempts to de-legitimize the residents of Chevron and Kiryat Arba, opting to ignore the destruction of the homes, without warning, without mercy, an act that left many children and their parents homeless.

At present, government ministers are focusing their efforts on ‘bringing the inciters to justice’ in the name of democracy and justice.

In the meantime, the Women in Green organization is spearheading efforts to rebuild the Federman Farm, decrying the actions of the government.

In a related story, Noam Federman and two others arrested during the home demolition were released by the court on Sunday. It is reported that three soldiers refused to comply with orders during the home demolition, a report that is being adamantly denied by the military.

Obama and Ahmadinejad

Monday, October 27th, 2008

oa.jpgThe following article appears on the Forbes.com website:

Is Barack Obama the “promised warrior” coming to help the Hidden Imam of Shiite Muslims conquer the world?

The question has made the rounds in Iran since last month, when a pro-government Web site published a Hadith (or tradition) from a Shiite text of the 17th century. The tradition comes from Bahar al-Anvar (meaning Oceans of Light) by Mullah Majlisi, a magnum opus in 132 volumes and the basis of modern Shiite Islam.

According to the tradition, Imam Ali Ibn Abi-Talib (the prophet’s cousin and son-in-law) prophesied that at the End of Times and just before the return of the Mahdi, the Ultimate Saviour, a “tall black man will assume the reins of government in the West.” Commanding “the strongest army on earth,” the new ruler in the West will carry “a clear sign” from the third imam, whose name was Hussein Ibn Ali. The tradition concludes: “Shiites should have no doubt that he is with us.”

In a curious coincidence Obama’s first and second names–Barack Hussein–mean “the blessing of Hussein” in Arabic and Persian. His family name, Obama, written in the Persian alphabet, reads O Ba Ma, which means “he is with us,” the magic formula in Majlisi’s tradition.

Mystical reasons aside, the Khomeinist establishment sees Obama’s rise as another sign of the West’s decline and the triumph of Islam. Obama’s promise to seek unconditional talks with the Islamic Republic is cited as a sign that the U.S. is ready to admit defeat. Obama’s position could mean abandoning three resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council setting conditions that Iran should meet to avoid sanctions. Seeking unconditional talks with the Khomeinists also means an admission of moral equivalence between the U.S. and the Islamic Republic. It would imply an end to the description by the U.S. of the regime as a “systematic violator of human rights.”

Obama has abandoned claims by all U.S. administrations in the past 30 years that Iran is “a state sponsor of terrorism.” Instead, he uses the term “violent groups” to describe Iran-financed outfits such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Obama has also promised to attend a summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference within the first 100 days of his presidency. Such a move would please the mullahs, who have always demanded that Islam be treated differently, and that Muslim nations act as a bloc in dealings with Infidel nations.

Obama’s election would boost President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s chances of winning a second term next June. Ahmadinejad’s entourage claim that his “steadfastness in resisting the American Great Satan” was a factor in helping Obama defeat “hardliners” such as Hillary Clinton and, later, it hopes, John McCain.

“President Ahmadinejad has taught Americans a lesson,” says Hassan Abbasi, a “strategic adviser” to the Iranian president. “This is why they are now choosing someone who understands Iran’s power.” The Iranian leader’s entourage also point out that Obama copied his campaign slogan “Yes, We Can” from Ahmadinejad’s “We Can,” used four years ago.

A number of Khomeinist officials have indicated their preference for Obama over McCain, who is regarded as an “enemy of Islam.” A Foreign Ministry spokesman says Iran does not wish to dictate the choice of the Americans but finds Obama “a better choice for everyone.” Ali Larijani, Speaker of the Islamic Majlis, Iran’s ersatz parliament, has gone further by saying the Islamic Republic “prefers to see Barack Obama in the White House” next year.

Tehran’s penchant for Obama, reflected in the official media, increased when the Illinois senator chose Joseph Biden as his vice-presidential running mate. Biden was an early supporter of the Khomeinist revolution in 1978-1979 and, for the past 30 years, has been a consistent advocate of recognizing the Islamic Republic as a regional power. He has close ties with Khomeinist lobbyists in the U.S. and has always voted against sanctions on Iran.

Ahmadinejad has described the U.S. as a “sunset” (ofuli) power as opposed to Islam, which he says is a “sunrise” (toluee) power. Last summer, he inaugurated an international conference called World Without America–attended by anti-Americans from all over the world, including the U.S.

Seen from Tehran, Obama’s election would demoralize the U.S. armed forces by casting doubt on their victories in Iraq and Afghanistan, if not actually transforming them into defeat. American retreat from the Middle East under Obama would enable the Islamic Republic to pursue hegemony of the region. Tehran is especially interested in dominating Iraq, thus consolidating a new position that extends its power to the Mediterranean through Syria and Lebanon.

During the World Without America conference, several speakers speculated that Obama would show “understanding of Muslim grievances” with regard to Palestine. Ahmadinejad hopes to persuade a future President Obama to adopt the “Iranian solution for Palestine,” which aims at creating a single state in which Jews would quickly become a minority.

Judging by anecdotal evidence and the buzz among Iranian bloggers, while the ruling Khomeinists favor Obama, the mass of Iranians regard (and dislike) the Democrat candidate as an appeaser of the mullahs. Iran, along with Israel, is the only country in the Middle East where the United States remains popular. An Obama presidency, perceived as friendly to the oppressive regime in Tehran, may change that.

Drug Improves Outcomes for Gout Patients

Monday, October 27th, 2008

The drug pegloticase (Puricase) may help gout patients who’ve had no luck with other treatments, according to researchers who studied 212 patients who’d run out of treatment options.

They were randomly assigned to receive six months of intravenous treatment with either pegloticase or a placebo. One group of patients received 8 milligrams of pegloticase every two weeks, another group received 8 milligrams of pegloticase every four weeks, and a third group received the placebo.

The patients — mostly men with an average age of 55 years — had a significantly better response to pegloticase than to the placebo. While there wasn’t a significant difference in number of gout flares, more of the patients who took the drug had more complete resolution of tophi, which are chalky deposits or uric acid. The patients who took pegloticase also noticed improved physical function.

Overall, pegloticase was successful in treating 40 percent of patients. Successful treatment was defined as having uric acid readings within the normal range at least 80 percent of the time in months three and six.

Patients who took pegloticase had more serious adverse side effects than those who took the placebo.

“Patients with treatment failure gout suffer from severe pain, increased disability, and reduced quality of life,” lead investigator Dr. John S. Sundy, an associate professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center, said in an American College of Rheumatology news release. “Therefore, these findings are exciting, because they show that pegloticase was able to reduce urate levels and improve clinical outcomes in subjects with gout who had exhausted all available treatment options.”

The findings were expected to be presented Sunday at the American College of Rheumatology annual meeting, in San Francisco.

Shas Under Fire – Yishai Defends His Party’s Position

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

yishai1.jpgAs has become the ritual, the Sephardi chareidi Shas Party is under fire following the announcement that it does not plan to join the coalition government being formed by Premier-designate Tzipi Livni.

During a Sunday morning radio interview with Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) host Razi Barkai, Yishai was blasted for putting his party agenda over the good of the nation – questioning his real intentions and asked “What deal did Bibi make with you?” in reference to opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu. Yishai was also accused of pushing ahead the national elections to get them out of the way prior to the moral turpitude stain expiring on Aryeh Deri’s record, which will permit the former party leader to compete for the party leadership, possibly ousting Yishai.

Yishai stood his ground and repelled the assaults one by one. Justifiably, he told Barkai that “whatever we do, we are under attack.” Yishai explained that if Shas would have entered the government, accepting the additional NIS 350 in monthly child allowance payments, the public would shout “You see they sell out Jerusalem for money.” This time he explained, Shas rejected the offer on the table because Livni and Kadima are unwilling to make a commitment regarding the future of Yerushalayim and Shas is not willing to be a partner in a government that chas v’sholom gives away Jewish sovereignty over the Jewish capital.

Regarding Netanyahu, he stated while they are in touch, as one would expect, “there have been no negotiations and no promises made whatsoever.”

In reference to Aryeh Deri, Yishai explained that the leadership of the party is determined by the Council of Torah Sages and Rav Ovadia Yosef Shlita, no one else, promising that when the day comes that Deri is permitted to reenter the public arena, and Rav Ovadia requests that he step down to the clear the way for Deri’s return, he will do so without any hesitation.

Yishai angrily rejected the allegations, stating that he and Shas remain loyal to their principles, which in this case are led by concerns for the future of Yerushalayim.

VIDEO – Angry Williamsburg Residents To Protest DOT

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

dot.jpg[UPDATE & VIDEO LINK IN EXTENDED ARTICLE] Williamsburg residents woke up on Shabbos morning in shock and disbelieve that the Department of Transportation (DOT) had changed the signs on Kent Avenue from Broadway-Williamsburg West from “Alternate Side” to “No Standing any Time” without any notice to the area residents!

“Not only did DOT change these signs without any notification to the area residents in advance, but they had the Chutzpah to change them on a weekend (Friday Night) when the Jewish residents could not move their cars. All the residents had parked their cars LEGALLY on Friday, not planning to move their vehicles for the weekend,” said Isaac Abraham, a Williamsburg Community Leader, and Candidate for NYC Council 33rd District.

“Even more insulting was that early Shabbos Morning, traffic enforcement agents already gave summonses to more then 25 cars parked on Kent Ave.” Mr. Abraham continued.

“Once again the public is being reminded that the DOT stands for Department Of Troubles”.

A demonstration is called by all Kent Avenue residents in front off Schaefer Landing; 440 Kent Avenue - Sunday (today) at 2:30 PM.

UPDATE 3:45PM EST: Elected officials, including NYS Senator Eric Adams, NYC Councilwoman Latisha James, numerous media outlets, along with a large crowd gathered on the streets in protest of the DOT’s actions.

UPDATE 6:00PM EST: The following is a direct statement issued by the DOT late Sunday afternoon: “DOT gave advance notification to community leaders and local elected officials that signage would change. Summonses given out during the period in question will be dismissed.”

Photos: Chaveirim Appreciation Melava Malka

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Cha.jpg(PHOTO LINK AT END OF ARTICLE) There was a Melava Malka held last night, Motzei Shabbos Parshas Bireishis, in appreciation of the dedicated volunteers of the Chaveirim Organization from Boro Park, Williamsburg, Flatbush and the Catskills. The event was held Williamsburg;s Continental Hall, and was well attended by members of the NYPD – who use Chaverim almost daily.

Founded by R’ Aaron Yitzchok Cohen and a group of concerned individuals immediately after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Chaveirim was launched to provide non-emergency, volunteer aid that would be within the capacity of a grass roots organization. Working to assist motorists stranded due to minor hurdles, such as car lockouts, flat tires or running out of gas, as well as helping the elderly & handicapped in our community with their daily needs, the Chaveirim hotline has been handling hundreds of calls daily, with an astonishing 94,000 calls logged to this date.

Chaveirim encompasses a network of 282 volunteers, equipped with an advanced dispatch and communication system, and is constantly expanding to new communities.  Chaveirim operate in the areas of North and South Brooklyn, New York City, and the Catskills during the summer weeks.  New recruits are screened and background checked to ensure their competency.  This is followed by an extensive training course, which includes live presentations, to lay emphasis on efficiency and professionalism.  Equipment is then distributed to the volunteers to gear them up for the task.

Young Israel Movement Presents Synagogue Leadership Day

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

The National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) announces that it will present a Regional Synagogue Leadership Day on Sunday, November 9, from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM.  The event will take place at the Young Israel of West Hempstead, which is located at 630 Hempstead Avenue in West Hempstead, New York.

The Regional Synagogue Leadership Day will address a multitude of issues relating to the operation and growth of synagogues, including fundraising, programming, membership growth, publicity strategies, legal issues, maximizing the Internet, and special programming for women, singles, seniors, and youth.

The program is for Synagogue Presidents, Board and Committee members, Sisterhood leaders, Rabbis and Rebbetzins, Executive Directors, and Youth Directors.

According to NCYI President Shlomo Z. Mostofsky, the Regional Synagogue Leadership Day is intended to enhance the National Council of Young Israel’s continuing efforts to provide synagogue leadership with practical solutions for the challenges that they confront.

“The synagogue is the centerpiece of the Jewish community and the nucleus of Jewish life,” said Mostofsky, “Serving the needs of a synagogue requires not just time commitments from the congregants, but a depth of understanding by the people who are responsible for its overall operations and continued success, which is why ongoing training for lay leaders and clergy members is so critical.”

Mostofsky noted that the National Council of Young Israel presents Regional Synagogue Leadership Days throughout the United States, so that as many communities as possible are given the opportunity to benefit from this novel and vital program.

The November 9th Regional Synagogue Leadership Day is open to both Young Israel affiliated synagogues and non-Young Israel affiliated synagogues.  Seating is limited and advanced reservations are required.  The program is free for Young Israel synagogues and $18 for non-Young Israel members.

Eitan Rejects Opposition Leaders’ Offer

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu last week met with Pensioner Party leader Minister Rafi Eitan, also speaking with him on at least one occasion by phone. He offered Eitan a secure slot on the Likud election roster in exchange for remaining outside the Livni coalition.

Eitan confirmed “offers were made” but I rejected them, declining to go into details.

The daily Haaretz reports that Netanyahu predicted that Shas would not enter the coalition, but he could not be certain of this, fearing Shas would be presented with an offer it could not refuse. As such, he reportedly informed Shas leader Eli Yishai that if he forms a government, Shas would be the first party approached to enter the government. Kadima officials report Netanyahu has promised the return of the monthly child allowance payments but this is speculation at best. In addition, Netanyahu has been a strong opponent of the monthly payments, eliminating them during his tenure as prime minister.

Relations seem to be improving between the opposition leader and Shas, relations that were extremely strained as a result of Netanyahu’s policies as finance minister in the government of Ariel Sharon.

Court Supports Athlete’s Shabbos Petition

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

The Supreme Court on Friday handed down a ruling in favor of Yuval Freilich, a Shomer Shabbos athlete who is seeking to have a championship event postponed to permit him to take part without chas v’sholom transgressing the Shabbos.

The petition was filed by Yuval and his father against the Israel Fencing Association, telling the court the decision to schedule a match on Shabbos is tantamount to religious discrimination.

Justice Chanan Meltzer ruled that Freilich’s rights to keep Shabbos superseded the fencing association’s schedule and therefore, if a match is held on Shabbos, Freilich must be awarded a technical victory, permitting him to move on to the championship level.

Freilich is the national champion in fencing in the under bar mitzvah age class.

JUST IN – US Forces Conduct Raid In Syria

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

army.jpg2:18PM EST: UPDATE IN EXTENDED ARTICLE According various Middle-East reports, residents in a Syrian border town near Iraq report that US forces have killed seven men in a helicopter-borne commando attack inside Syria.

Doctors in a town approximately eight kilometres from the Iraqi border, said seven corpses and four wounded had been delivered to a nearby clinic after the attack.

Eyewitnesses reported to local media that four helicopters were involved in the operation, with two of the helicopters landing in the town and eight American soldiers disembarking. The eyewitnesses said that the seven killed men were supposedly construction workers.

Afterwards, the US helicopters then left Syrian airspace with all the soldiers again on board.

There was no initial US comment about the reported incident. If confirmed, it would be the first time that US forces had carried out an attack on Syrian soil.

Reuters reported that the official Syrian news agency SANA did not identify the helicopters but said the attack took place in the Bou Kamal border area, in eastern Syria.

Further details on this developing story will be forthcoming……

UPDATE 4:45PM EST: Reports regarding an American assault inside Syria, about 8 kilometers (4.8 miles) east of the Iraqi border, are based on Arab media networks, including the officials Syrian Sana Agency and al-Jazeera, the Arab satellite news network.

As was reported earlier, four American helicopters neared the border and two hovered to give cover for ground forces, presumably an elite US unit. The ground force according to the Syrian media fired “at innocent people” working near the border, killing at least seven and leaving others wounded. One speculative report supported by Israel’s Channel 10 News states perhaps the force was targeted al-Qaeda operatives about to cross into Iraq and the American special force was acting on credible intelligence information.  The Reuters agency reports there are a number of children among the dead.

According to Syria’s al-Dunia agency, the attack occurred in the village of Al Sukkiraya, east of the capital, adding 9 people were killed and 14 wounded. The report stresses all the victims are civilians.

The attack comes two weeks after the Bush administration released statements it is reevaluating its isolation policy regarding Syria. Relations between Damascus and Washington have deteriorated significantly since the 2005 assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. Washington immediately pointed the finger of blame at Syria, realizing Damascus continues attempting to spread its influence in Lebanon and elsewhere in the region, with close ties to the radical elements including Hizbullah and Iran. To date, Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad indicates he is unwilling to cut ties with Iran, and Damascus continues efforts to obtain advances ballistic missiles and anti-aircraft systems from Russia. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, during a recent visit to Russia, announced he succeeded in preventing such a weapons deal from taking place.

On September 6, 2007, Israel’s air force reportedly targeted a nuclear reactor built in Syria in cooperation with N. Korea. The Americans announced after the fact that President Bush knew of the attack before it occurred, signaling White House support for the move, followed by a January 2008 NY Times report which confirmed a nuclear facility was targeted, later backed up by the release of satellite imaging. The information was also confirmed in a CIA report to a US congressional subcommittee.

Much speculation surrounds the news of this American military assault across the Syrian border, perhaps related to reports released earlier in the day by YWN of suspicious and unexplained activity along Israel’s northern border as well as along the border in southern Lebanon involving UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) forces. Those reports too were based on sources in Lebanon, totally ignored by the Israeli media.
