Canada: Anti-Semitic Graffiti Found In Victoria Park

Friday, May 28th, 2010

The Jewish community in Victoria, B.C., was stunned to learn that vandals had spray-painted anti-Semitic graffiti on the slides and climbing apparatus in Clawthorpe Park last week.

Police estimated the vandals struck between May 10 and May 11, spraying swastikas and misspelled epithets that were speedily removed the next day by Victoria city work crews.

Det. Rhys Wickes of the Victoria Police Department asked for assistance from the public in identifying the culprits and said this kind of hate-filled vandalism is taken very seriously.

“It’s just unacceptable and represents a blow to values important in Victoria,” he said.

The children of Rabbi Meir Kaplan, who heads Chabad of Vancouver Island, are frequent visitors to Clawthorpe Park, particularly on Shabbat mornings.

On his blog, Rabbi Kaplan said each structure in the playground was covered with graffiti. “ ‘No Jews’ it said on the ladder, and ‘Warsaw getto’ on the children’s crawling space. Nazi swastikas were all over the slides. It was very uncomfortable and extremely saddening to see.”

Rabbi Kaplan added that he was confident this graffiti in no way characterizes public opinion of the Jewish community on Vancouver Island.

“I know that this doesn’t represent Victoria,” he wrote. “We know that the general community here is friendly and tolerant. To those people who may be bothered by the stronger Jewish presence in Victoria, we have some news for them: what they have seen is just the beginning. Jewish life will flourish on the island, more people will be returning from synagogue on Shabbat afternoon… and more Jewish children who are proud of their identity will be playing in the parks.”

Rabbi Kaplan said he met with Victoria Police Chief Jamie Graham on May 17 and was assured that the Victoria police were taking the case very seriously.

“Graham said they are putting their best people on the job, and that they were confident they would find those responsible,” Kaplan said.

Asked if there were many members of Victoria’s Jewish community who used the park regularly, he said it was primarily his family. “The reality is that we use the park regularly on Shabbat morning when we return from shul. It seems to be that this was directed against us.”

This is not the first time vandals have struck the Jewish community. Just three weeks ago, the wall facing the parking lot at the Victoria Jewish Community Centre was sprayed with graffiti stating “Zionists are Nazis.”

A painter primed and painted the wall, refusing to take any money for his work, and police said they would patrol the area more often. A spokesperson for the JCC said police recognized the graffiti and identified its artist as an agitator who did not target the Jewish community exclusively.
Tim Humphreys, community development officer for Jewish Federation of Victoria and Vancouver Island, said this was the second time in two years the JCC has been spray-painted with anti-Semitic slogans.

“There have been a couple of incidents of anti-Semitism up-island in the past few years, and we’ve called on the Canadian Jewish Congress to go and do educational sessions in the schools,” he said.

“Usually once they do that, the results are very positive, because the incidents are related to a basic lack of knowledge by students.”

Old City Closing Down to Vehicular Traffic

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Jerusalem City Hall and the Ministry of Transportation announced on Thursday that beginning next Sunday; the Jaffa Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City will be closed to all vehicular traffic between 9:00am-6:00pm. Exceptions will be made for residents with parking stickers affixed to their vehicle, authorized deliveries, and drivers with valid handicapped permits.

The closure is part of the new city plan to reduce congestion in certain areas, and despite objections from the frum community, the decision was made to close the Old City down to private vehicles, a reality that will make reaching the Kosel increasingly difficult for many.

A company that feels it is entitled to delivery permit may telephone the city at *2180, the special phone number established to address such requests, to ascertain if a permit will be forthcoming. City officials report the recent ‘park and ride’ experiment has been a success, clearing the way for the implementation of this decision.

Drivers will be compelled to park at the designated lot, at a reduced price, and will then take the 38 line into the Old City. Special bus tickets will be available for this as well. As a result of the new arrangement, the bus will run at an increasingly frequent schedule.

Since traffic flow is generally not congested between 6:00pm and 9:00am, the Old City will remain open to motorists during those hours.

The 1,2, and 3 lines will continue operating as they do today, increasing their frequency during peak hours. Bus officials add the Jerusalem 75 minute ride pass, permitting one to ride as many buses as one wishes in a 75 minute period, will be applicable to Old City lines too.

The daily HaMevaser reports the decision is contrary to the position of the chareidi community and a kol korei of rabbonim who express opposition to the planned change. Rabbi Chaim Miller, a prominent Jerusalem askan questions how officials arrive at such a decision without engaging in a dialogue with community representatives.

Yishuv Rabbonim Seeking to Awaken the Tzibur

Friday, May 28th, 2010

(Click on image to enlarge) Seemingly at a loss as the 10-month construction freeze continues, accompanied by Defense Minister Ehud Barak’s tenacious enforcement of violations appear to have compelled a number of rabbonim from communities in Shomron to release a kol korei.

Signing the kol korei are Rabbis Moshe Udis (Tzufim), Uriel Ganzel (Revava), David Dudkevitz (Yitzhar), Meir Helvitz (Bruchin), Natan Chai (Itamar), Elyakim Levanon (Elon Moreh), David Levy (Avnei Chafetz), Shmuel Cohen (Tapuach), Avner Nechushtan (Rechalim), Netanel Oved (Kiryat Netafim), Reuven Uziel (N. Shomron yishuvim), Nir Rosenberg (Einav), and Yehoshua Schmidt (Shavei Shomron).

They are calling on the tzibur to take part in protests at intersections throughout Shomron, to protest the building freeze and the Civil Administration’s list of 46 Shomron locations where “illegal structures” were set in place.

15,000 copies were printed and circulated to communities throughout Shomron in the hope of awaken the tzibur, which compared to years ago, has become quite complacent and apathetic.

Rabbonim call on residents to set out to the nearest intersection with as many vehicles as possible to block security forces when an area is sealed off ahead of a planned demolition in the hope of preventing some of the security forces from reaching their objective.

High Court Wants Eli Road Destroyed Now

Friday, May 28th, 2010

High Court of Justice President Justice Dorit Beinish questions why the road connecting the veteran neighborhood of Yishuv Eli to satellite neighborhood Givat HaYovel has not yet been destroyed as instructed.

The Yesh Din organization, which filed the petition, maintains the road was constructed on private land and therefore, it is illegal and must be torn up. Beinish refers to the neighborhood as the “illegal outpost”, questioning the justification of constructing a paved road to an “illegal outpost”.

The court admonished the continued paving of a road after a stop-work order was issued, but ignored.

According to Avi Ro’eh, who heads the Benjamin Regional Council, where Eli is located, the state prosecutor is not familiar enough with the details of the case, insisting work on the road was halted as required and the paved portion was torn up. The paved portion that exists today, the old road, remains to permit safe travel to the community. This portion of the road is not at all included in the disputed area.

Navy Commander to Soldiers: ‘Act With Judgment & Accomplish The Mission’

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Navy Commander Admiral Eliezer Marom requires soldiers not to be dragged into provocations while fulfilling their mission. Moreover, the flotilla will have the opportunity to stop its journey to Gaza’s shores at several stages; otherwise the passengers will be escorted into Israel’s shores and deported to their country of origin. The aid brought by the flotilla will be transferred into the Gaza Strip after a security check.

According to the decision made by the Israeli government, the IDF and the Israeli Navy are getting prepared to prevent the flotilla from reaching the shores of Gaza. The flotilla’s passengers will be given the opportunity to turn back at any stage of their trip or to give up the control of their ships.

From the moment of their departure, the ships will receive formal warnings at various stages of their journey, requesting them to stop their trip to Gaza’s shores.

Should the passengers decide to continue the journey and not take the Israeli Navy’s warning into consideration, they will be arrested, brought to Israel’s shores and transferred to the Ministry of Interior and the immigration authorities so they can be sent back to their country of origin.

The security forces will grab hold of the aid expected to be brought to Gaza by the flotilla, and after a security check of the goods, they will be transferred into the Gaza Strip.

During the last few days Commander Marom organized a series of exercises, consisting in stopping the flotilla, gaining control over the ships and brining them to Israel’s shores. He stressed that during the operations, Israeli forces will take all the required steps in order to protect the soldiers’ lives, and make sure that no terrorist agents have been infiltrated into the ships.

Marom instructed his forces not to be dragged into provocations and act with fair judgment; otherwise it could be harmful to the mission’s accomplishment.

He also said to his men that there is no intention to cause any harm among the hundreds of people expected to arrive on these ships, however a clear mission has be assigned to the Israeli Navy and it has to be accomplished.

Parsha Potpourri: Parshas Beha’aloscha

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Vayishma Moshe es ha’am boche l’mishp’chosav (11:10)

The Gemora in Shabbos (130a) teaches that any mitzvah which was accepted by the Jewish people with joy, such as circumcision, is still performed happily to the present day. Any mitzvah that was accepted with fighting, such as forbidden relationships, is still accompanied by tension, as the issues involved in the negotiation of every wedding cause struggles. Of all of the commandments, why did the Jewish people specifically complain about the prohibition against marrying family members?

Dayan Yisroel Yaakov Fisher suggests that when the Jews heard that they would be unable to marry their close relatives, they feared that they would be unable to enjoy successful marriages. They believed that the ideal candidate for marriage would be a person who was familiar since birth and who would be almost identical in terms of values and stylistic preferences. From the Torah’s prohibition to marry those most similar to us, we may deduce that Hashem’s vision of an ideal marriage differs from our own.

The Mas’as HaMelech derives a similar lesson from Parshas Ki Seitzei, which begins by discussing the Y’fas Toar – woman of beautiful form. The Torah permits a soldier who becomes infatuated with a non-Jewish woman during battle to marry her. This is difficult to understand, as only the most righteous individuals constituted the Jewish army. Rashi writes (Devorim 20:8) that somebody who had committed even the smallest sin was sent back from the war. How could such pious Rabbis be tempted to marry a beautiful non-Jewish woman?

Rashi writes (21:11) that a person who marries a Y’fas Toar will ultimately give birth to a Ben Sorer U’Moreh – wayward son. The Gemora in Sanhedrin (71a) rules that a child may only be punished as a rebellious son if his parents are identical in their voices, appearances, and height. The Mas’as HaMelech explains that even the most righteous soldier will be taken aback upon encountering a woman who looks like him and whose voice is identical to his. All external signs seem to indicate that she is meant for him, and he may be convinced that Hashem’s will is for him to convert her and marry her.

However, from the fact that Rashi teaches that a wayward son will come out of such a union, we may conclude that the ideal marriage isn’t one in which the husband and wife enter already identical to one another. A Torah marriage is one in which the two partners grow together over time to understand and respect one another, allowing them to overcome their differences and create a beautiful, harmonious blend of their unique perspectives and experiences.

V’ruach nasa me’es Hashem vayagez slavim min hayam vayitosh al hamachane k’derech yom koh uk’derech yom koh sevivos hamachane uk’amasayim al p’nei ha’aretz (11:31)

During their 40-year sojourn in the wilderness, the Jewish people were sustained by Manna, which miraculously fell each day from Heaven. All they needed to do was go out each morning to collect it, allowing their physical needs to be met with a minimum of exertion. Moreover, our Sages teach that the Manna tasted like whatever the person eating it desired (Rashi 11:5).

Parshas Behaaloscha contains a tragic incident, in which a group of ungrateful complainers began to protest the Manna that they were forced to eat day after day. They wailed that they missed the succulent meat that they ate in Egypt, and now they had nothing to look forward to except Manna. Hashem responded to their lack of appreciation by giving them an abundance of meat.

Although this entire episode is difficult to comprehend, one detail in particular stands out as particularly curious. The Torah records that the meat was two cubits (3-4 feet) above the ground. Rashi explains that the animals floated in mid-air at this level so that the Jews who went to gather them wouldn’t have to exert themselves to bend over and pick them up from the ground.

However, we know that a mere two verses later, the Torah relates (11:33) that those who gluttonously consumed the meat died with the meat still between their teeth. If Hashem felt that their complaints and demands were inappropriate and planned to use the meat as an instrument of Divine punishment, why did He miraculously suspend the animals in mid-air to prevent unnecessary efforts on the part of such sinners?

The Darkei Mussar derives from here a beautiful lesson in how Hashem runs the world. Rashi is teaching us that Hashem’s system of reward and punishment is meted out very precisely. Even a person upon whom suffering is decreed will only experience the exact amount of pain which is coming to him and not the slightest bit more.

This concept is illustrated in the following story. A man once arrived at the airport and checked in for his flight. After he was already in his seat and waiting for takeoff, the flight attendant approached to explain that he hadn’t paid the balance of his ticket and must deplane. The man was livid, as he knew that he had paid and he needed to be on this flight. The flight crew was insistent that they wouldn’t take off with him on board, and they suggested that he quickly sort it out at the gate.

Highly perturbed but left with no choice, the passenger went to argue with the manager. Unfortunately, by the time the manager located the source of the error, the plane had departed. The man was beside himself with anger … until he heard on the news that the plane had crashed without any survivors. He was so overcome with emotion that it took him several minutes to realize that although his life was spared, his suitcase had been left on the plane and was destroyed. Still, any pain he felt over his lost personal items paled in comparison to his tremendous joy over his life being saved. Even though Hashem had decreed that he must lose his suitcase, He took it away in a calculated and precise manner which minimized the pain.

Although nobody enjoys suffering, the knowledge that it is precisely meted out by a loving and compassionate G-d Who won’t put him through the smallest amount of unnecessary pain can make it significantly more bearable.

Parsha Points to Ponder (and sources which discuss them):

1)     Rashi writes (9:7) that the section discussing the laws of Pesach Sheini would have been taught by Moshe together with the rest of the Torah, but the impure men merited that the portion was introduced and written as a result of their actions. Rashi similarly writes (27:5) that the daughters of Tzelafchad merited bringing about the teaching of the laws of inheritance through their actions. Why aren’t the names of the impure men specified, as are the names of the daughters of Tzelafchad, in order to give them proper credit for introducing this section? (Darash Moshe)

2)     The Torah testifies (12:3) that Moshe was more humble than any person on the face of the earth. Does this mean that it is physically impossible for another person to be more humble than Moshe, or is the Torah merely stating the facts and teaching that in reality nobody was ever more humble than Moshe, even though it is theoretically possible to do so? (Ayeles HaShachar)

3)     The Mishnah in Avos (5:7) lists seven characteristics of a wise person, one of which is that he doesn’t interrupt another person who is still speaking. From where in Parshas Behaaloscha is this lesson derived? (Rav Ovadiah Bartenura Avos 5:7)

4)     The Rambam writes (Hilchos Tumas Tzara’as 16:10) that Miriam didn’t intend to disparage Moshe with her comments to Aharon. Rather, she erred in equating the level of Moshe’s prophecy to that of other prophets such as herself and Aharon. The Rambam lists 13 fundamental principles of Jewish belief and writes that a person who denies even one of them is considered a heretic. One of them is that the level of Moshe’s prophecy is unparalleled among all other prophets. Does this mean, G-d forbid, that Miriam was a heretic? (Kovetz Ma’amorim)

5)     The Torah records (12:13) that Moshe prayed on behalf of his ill sister Miriam. Why do we pray for the healing of a sick person using his mother’s name? (Zohar HaKadosh Parshas Lech Lecha 81a, Maharshal Shabbos 66b, Chasam Sofer Parshas Bereishis, Ben Yehoyada Berachos 55b, Shu”t Torah Lishmah 399, Ma’adanei Asher 5768)

Video: Obama’s First Press Conference in 338 Days; Defends His Response To Gulf Oil Spill

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Earlier today, the President took questions from the press at the White House on the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. During his opening remarks, the President updated the American people on the “top kill” procedure that was approved yesterday. This procedure attempts to plug the well with densely packed mud to reduce or stop the flow of oil. It’s still too soon to tell if the procedure will work.

The President also clarified the role the Federal Government has played in the response since Day 1:

The American people should know that from the moment this disaster began, the federal government has been in charge of the response effort.  As far as I’m concerned, BP is responsible for this horrific disaster, and we will hold them fully accountable on behalf of the United States as well as the people and communities victimized by this tragedy.  We will demand that they pay every dime they owe for the damage they’ve done and the painful losses that they’ve caused.  And we will continue to take full advantage of the unique technology and expertise they have to help stop this leak.

But make no mistake:  BP is operating at our direction.  Every key decision and action they take must be approved by us in advance.  I’ve designated Admiral Thad Allen – who has nearly four decades of experience responding to such disasters – as the National Incident Commander, and if he orders BP to do something to respond to this disaster, they are legally bound to do it.  So, for example, when they said they would drill one relief well to stem this leak we demanded a backup and ordered them to drill two.  And they are in the process of drilling two.

The President emphasized that the government would do everything in it’s power to stop the leak and clean up the mess and was employing the best and brightest minds from around the country to solve this problem.  In addition to cleaning up the oil, the Administration is also focused on restoring the livelihoods of families who rely on the Gulf to make a living

We’re also doing whatever it takes to help the men and women whose livelihoods have been disrupted and even destroyed by this spill -– everyone from fishermen to restaurant and hotel owners. So far the Small Business Administration has approved loans and allowed many small businesses to defer existing loan payments.  At our insistence, BP is paying economic injury claims, and we’ll make sure that when all is said and done, the victims of this disaster will get the relief that they are owed.  We’re not going to abandon our fellow citizens.  We’ll help them recover and we will help them rebuild.

To ensure that a spill of this magnitude never happens again, President Obama outlined immediate steps the Department of the Interior will take to reform the Minerals Management Service, which is responsible for issuing drilling leases and regulating oil facilities:

Additionally, after reading the report’s recommendations with Secretary Salazar and other members of my administration, we’re going to be ordering the following actions:  First, we will suspend the planned exploration of two locations off the coast of Alaska.  Second, we will cancel the pending lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico and the proposed lease sale off the coast of Virginia.  Third, we will continue the existing moratorium and suspend the issuance of new permits to drill new deepwater wells for six months.  And four, we will suspend action on 33 deepwater exploratory wells currently being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico.

The President also made the broader point that this tragedy should serve as a “wake-up call” for Americans that our dependence on oil is not sustainable.  Focusing our resources on renewable energy will not only protect our environment, but “it will it will create a new, homegrown, American industry that can lead to countless new businesses and new jobs.”

President Obama is scheduled to make his second trip to the Gulf Coast region tomorrow.

Preparing for the Opening of 443 to PA Motorists

Friday, May 28th, 2010

The Israeli defense establishment will implement the Supreme Court’s decision to open Route 443 to Palestinian vehicles today, Friday May 28th, 2010 at 08:00 in the morning.

The IDF Central Command is preparing for the implementation of the Supreme Court ruling. As stated by the ruling, the route will be open for Palestinian traffic from the Maccabim junction to the Ofir Camp junction. An infrastructural and operational response will be given simultaneously to the opening of the route, offering protection to all those traveling on the route and minimizing, as much as possible, the existing threats.

As part of the preparations to secure the safety of those traveling on Route 443, vehicles that have undergone security inspection can enter and exit Route 443 from the areas of Beit Sira and Beit-Ur Al Fauqa, west of Ramallah. In addition, vehicles will be able to exit the road in the areas of Khirbeth Al-Misbah and A-Tira, also located west of Ramallah.

Additionally, a security crossing will be installed near the Ofir Camp junction, which will prevent suspects without authorization to enter Israel, Jerusalem and Givat Ze’ev, and will also ensure the safety of those traveling on the route.

It should be emphasized that security activity takes place regularly and on a daily basis both in the area of Route 443 and throughout the Judea and Samaria region in general.

The IDF will continue to maintain the safety of the citizens of Israel, while taking into account the Palestinian quality of life as well as honoring Israeli law and Supreme Court decisions.

DiNapoli: Don’t Use Debt to Balance NYS Budget

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli today released an analysis showing that the current proposals for deficit financing would cost taxpayers up to $850 million in debt service annually. The additional borrowing would cost taxpayers $8 billion over the life of the debt and drive up projected out-year gaps, which are already projected to be more than $30 billion cumulatively for the next three year fiscal years. DiNapoli noted the state already pays nearly $6 billion in debt service annually.

“New York already has misused debt too often,” DiNapoli said. “When you borrow to close budget gaps, there’s nothing to show for it but the billions taxpayers pay out each year — no roads, no schools, no bridges.

“And borrowing for this year does nothing to address next year’s budget gap. It’s time to put aside borrowing proposals and move forward with a budget that recognizes New York’s fiscal reality. Every day of delay is just more wasted time.”

New York’s current State-Funded debt level is $60.4 billion, which is projected to grow to $67 billion at the end of SFY 2014-15 even if the state doesn’t borrow to close this year’s budget gap. The state’s debt per capita is three times the national median and second highest in the nation among the largest states. Approximately $9.8 billion of outstanding debt was issued for past operating expenses and temporary budget relief. In SFY 2009-10, the state paid more than $1.1 billion in debt service for bonds that were issued for budget relief or for non-capital needs.

If the state issues $6 billion in 10-year deficit bonds, annual debt service costs for that new debt would range from $725 million to $850 million. If the debt is issued by the state’s public authorities as Personal Income Tax bonds, it would make the ratio of debt not been approved by voters even higher. DiNapoli noted that currently 94 percent of State-funded debt has been sold by public authorities without voter approval.

DiNapoli’s analysis noted the proposed borrowing could limit the state’s flexibility to address the state’s growing capital needs. In addition, any deficit financing proposal would have to be structured to circumvent the Debt Reform Act of 2000, which requires debt to be issued for capital purposes only.

DiNapoli urged the Executive and the Legislature to act on his fiscal reform proposals. DiNapoli said while it would be fiscally imprudent to borrow to close the deficit, it would be even more harmful if the Executive and the Legislature decided to borrow without any meaningful, comprehensive fiscal reforms that have been proposed.

DEP Says NYC Drinking Water Safe

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Drink up! The water’s safe, officials say.

There are no harmful levels of pharmaceuticals in New York City drinking water, according to a report released today by the NY Department of Environmental Protection.

The DEP tested NYC’s upstate source waters throughout 2009 for 78 different compounds, including antibiotics, hormones, and prescription medicines.

Sixteen of these, described as pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCP), were detected at least once in the four rounds of tests, and eight were detected in three or more tests — but only in infinitesimal levels.

Of these, caffeine was found to be the second-highest and Nicotine tied for third. The compound with the highest concentration was Butalbital, which is often found in sedatives and headache medicines.

All of the compounds’ levels were found to be approximately 1000 times lower than the government-regulated minimum.

“To get one dose of caffeine, or the amount contained in an 8-ounce cup of coffee, a person would have to drink 238,572,000 glasses of water,” the report said.

None of the 16 detected PPCP compounds were found at a concentration that would present a potential public health concern, according to the DEP press release.

The DEP “is committed to testing [pharmaceutical levels] for another year,” said DEP spokesman Farrell Sklerov, “and then, as necessary, moving forward to see if we need to keep testing.”

Concerns about pharmaceuticals in NYC drinking water were first raised in 2008. There is no federal regulation of pharmaceutical levels in water.  However, New York has a blanket regulation on any compound to a certain specified extent, Sklerov explained.  As such, the city was not required to perform this test.

”It’s always been known that there may exist some pharmaceuticals in the water,” explained Sklerov, “but the ability to test for it has taken a number of steps forward in the past few years.  We’re talking about detecting parts per trillion, which is an extremely minute quantity.”

Sklerov confirmed that the pharmaceutical levels are “not accumulative,” meaning that the DEP expects no significant rise in the foreseeable future.

NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley promised: “Our drinking water continues to be the cleanest, healthiest option for quenching New York City’s thirst,” according to the press release.

The tests were conducted in 2009 at three different upstate watersheds: Croton, Delaware and Catskill.  According to the report, 9 million New Yorkers rely daily on these sources for drinking water.

According to the DEP, pharmaceuticals get into water in a variety of ways: ingested ones may pass through the human waste system, and externally applied ones are washed through shower and bath water. Until recently, out-of-date medicines were sometimes flushed down toilets at hospitals, the DEP reports.

Loyal Israeli Arabs Join the Gaza Flotilla

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

A number of prominent loyal Israeli Arab citizens will be among those taking part in the Gaza flotilla, the very same self-proclaimed humanitarian effort that describe their soon-to-occur encounter with the Israel Navy “like confronting the Nazis”.

While right-wing activists Baruch Marzel and parliamentary aide Itamar Ben-Givir are placed under arrest in Jerusalem on Thursday for shouting “anti-Semite” at visiting White House bureau chief, Rahm Emanuel, Israeli MK (Balad) Hanin Zuabi is preparing to join her Hamas cohorts on the flotilla, accompanied by other prominent Israeli Arab citizens, Sheikh Rayed Salach, who head the Israel Islamic Movement Northern Branch, and Muhammad Zidan, who head the Arab Israeli Monitoring Committee.

Zuabi, who receives a state salary as a member of Knesset, told an Arab website that this is part of the struggle seeking to portray Israel and an “occupier” and a nation that keeps Gaza residents under an embargo.

Salach added that he and his colleagues are determined to break the embargo and enter Gaza.

VIDEO: Curtis Sliwa Crashes Cuomo Nomination Dressed As ‘King Cuomo’

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

In a humorous but pointed piece of political theater, a critic of Andrew M. Cuomo who called himself “King Cuomo II” and who wore a gold plastic crown and a full-length red velvet robe with white trim, made an unexpected appearance at the New York State Democratic convention here.

Underneath the costume, the man mocking Mr. Cuomo’s official designation as the Democratic candidate for governor was Curtis Sliwa, the radio host and a founder of the Guardian Angels.

Mr. Sliwa was trailed by a portly town crier, dressed in a more subdued suit and tie, carrying a plastic horn, and “Lady Godiva,” a fully clothed woman with shoulder-length hair who carried a plastic bag full of satin petals in red, white and blue that she threw into the air at his command.

Mr. Sliwa derided Mr. Cuomo for the political advantages he has enjoyed as the son of Mario M. Cuomo and satirized Mr. Cuomo’s aversion for extended dealings with the press.

Addressing a room of journalists, Mr. Sliwa said, “From now on, scribes, understand this: I will make myself available on a random basis for those of you who choose to be sycophants, toadies and lackeys.”

Mr. Sliwa said he would ban all interviews, especially sit-down interviews by the local television station New York 1, which has run a clock, counting the number of days since Mr. Cuomo last appeared on the station.

Though Mr. Sliwa seemed to relish delivering his prepared remarks, he declined to take questions from a reporter.

Spoofing language Mr. Cuomo employed in his acceptance speech for the nomination for governor, Mr. Sliwa said he would visit all 62 “fiefdoms in Cuomolot.”

After wandering the hallway for a bit, Mr. Sliwas was unceremoniously escorted out of the hotel by security.

Gafne & Maklev Visit Jaffa Archeological Site

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

MKs Moshe Gafne and Uri Maklev on Thursday visited the Jaffa archeological site, the subject of stormy protests accusing Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) officials of chilul kevarim.

Protests continued on Thursday, accompanied by anger as IAA officials first signaled to chareidim that work would be halted, but it was soon learned that the statement was far from the truth.

Maklev and Gafne were met by police as they arrived, who did not permit them to enter. After a sharp exchange of words, they were permitted into the site, insisting their status as MKs permit them to pass police barricades. At one point, Gafne wanted to get down into the area on a ladder, and archeologists threatened if he does, they will drop a boulder on him. The archeologists were distanced from the area after Gafne turned to police.

The protests were stormy, and rabbonim were the subject of police brutality. At about 2:00pm, IAA official Shuka Dorfman announced work would halt, an announcement that came as a surprise and proved short lived as work resumed about an hour later.

The organizers of the protests vow to “fill the jails” if necessary, but they are unwilling to turn a blind eye to the chilul kevarim that is taking place. As many point out, in the case of Barzilai Hospital it was argued that the matter was one of pikuach nefesh, and that the bones were of non-Jews. Here, in Jaffa, the bones are not of non-Jews and there is no pikuach nefesh, only the need for real estate developers to turn a profit.

Gag Order Lifted on Spy Case

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

The Israeli Arab community is calling it a political witch hunt after the gag order has been lifted and a serious criminal indictment has been filed against Amir Makhoul, 52, a father of five, who allegedly worked with Hizbullah agents, facing charges of espionage and treason – cooperating with the enemy in a time of war.

Makhoul, who is known as a major political activist told reporters that he has done nothing wrong, and certainly nothing to compromise state security, admitting to being an ardent activist on behalf of the Israeli Arab community. He faces the more serious charges of the two suspects in custody.

Makhoul’s family is accusing the Shin Bet of “planting information in the computers”, insisting Amir is not a spy and would never work against the state. Nevertheless, the legal process is moving ahead against him as an indictment was handed down on Thursday in the Haifa District Court. Also indicted was Omar Sayid, 50, a resident of Kafr Kana and a known activist for the Balad political party. He was arrested about two weeks ago, and he heads an Israeli Arab NGO, ‘Ittijah’, the Union of Arab Community Based Associations, as well as being the brother of a former MK.

Based on Shin Bet findings, Makhoul was in contact with Hizbullah agents no less than ten times, passing information using a computer with an encryption system installed on his computer by a Hizbullah operative when they met in Denmark. The state alleges that he passed information including the location of two Shin Bet facilities and one Mossad facility, the security arrangements at those facilities, along with information pertaining to Rafael, a firm that works with the Defense Ministry on projects that include weapons systems.

The comprehensive investigation further alleges that he failed in efforts to provide information pertaining to the movements of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and their convoys.

He also allegedly provided Hizbullah with information during the Second Lebanon War regarding rocket impact locations in Haifa to assist terrorists in maximizing their strikes.

Family members report international human rights organizations have already contacted them, seeking ways to assist.

The state is asking that the suspect is held without bail. Justice Ron Shapira agreed that he will remain in custody at least until the next hearing, set for a month from now.

Yad L’Achim Faces Off Against Tnuva

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Tnuva, Israel’s largest dairy cooperative, which produces a sizable mehadrin line, insists the allegations are baseless but Yad L’Achim’s Rabbi Sholom Dov Lifshitz insists his organization’s information has been confirmed.

This story begins in Kibbutz Herdoff in the Lower Galil, a community located in the Jezreel Valley Region. The community, which was founded about 30 years ago boasts a profitable organic industry, but Yad L’Achim explains things are not as innocent as they appear, reporting the community follows Anthroposophy, a spiritual philosophy founded by Rudolf Steiner, which R’ Lifshitz explains is avoda zara (idol worship) by every Torah definition of the word. So what’s the connection to the largest dairy, mehadrin consumers and Israel’s dairy industry?

According to the weekly Sha’ah Tovah Magazine, Tnuva operates a production line in the community, producing its ‘gevina shel pa’am’ (old fashion cheese) line which bears a Tnuva mehadrin kashrut.

Rabbi Lifshitz explains that consumers buying the products, including frum mehadrin-seeking shoppers, are directly funding avoda zara and in this case, community efforts to increase their numbers, outreach programs targeting Jewish children. He explains the community has an educational system inculcating children with its philosophy, and is quite active in promoting its agenda.

The report further adds that the word “kosher” does not appear on these products for a simple reason, such a claim would by state law compel a kashrut supervision by the local rabbinate as well. This would demand listing the place of origin and other facts that Tnuva does not wish to advertise. Therefore, the products only bear a ‘vaad mehadrin Tnuva’ claim, omitting the word “kosher”. Yad L’Achim insists this is to circumvent the need to tell consumers the mehadrin products originate in the idol worshipping kibbutz.

There is a code used for these products, which appears in the form of English letters, making it even less intelligible to many shoppers to whom English is foreign, or even the English speakers, who remain clueless as to the code.

Tnuva rejects Yad L’Achim’s allegations, insisting that the production line is not rented from the community, but owned outright by Tnuva and therefore, there is no connection to the community and its lifestyle. Furthermore, anything pertaining to kashrut is in line with the regulations of the Vaad Mehadrin and Rav Whitman, Tnuva’s rav, the firm’s officials explain.

The company does not deny that the place of manufacture of the product line does not appear on the finished product, but for an entirely different reason. They explain Kibbutz Herdoff is known for its organic products and putting the community’s name on non-organic products would have an adverse impact on its image. Products exhibit the “Vaad Mehadrin Tnuva” which is an appointed body by Israel’s Chief Rabbinate, thereby satisfying the law and the word “kosher” is superfluous since it says “Vaad Mehadrin” which must obviously be kosher too.

Rav Lifshitz is adamant, insisting Yad L’Achim gathered the facts and it can prove the case. He further adds that Yad L’Achim approached the Eida Chareidit, which was approached by the kibbutz to give a hechsher on its organic products. Lifshitz admits that halachically they are okay by-and-large, however, after explaining the situation the Eida complied with the Yad L’Achim request and rejected the kibbutz as a potential client, realizing by doing so, the religious community would be supporting a community that supports and promotes idol worship.

Shouting ‘Slaughter the Jews’ Puts Tel Aviv on Alert

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

When a passenger who witnesses described as appearing Arab shouted “slaughter the Jews” in Arabic on a Tel Aviv number 5 bus on Wednesday, he placed Tel Aviv on a terror alert status, compelling police and specialized units to begin combing the Dizengoff area where they got off of the bus, seeking to prevent a terror attack.

At one point police closed a portion of Dizengoff Street and uniformed police and special units were occupied for hours looking for an Arab couple who they feared may be on their way to carrying out an attack.

Eventually, during the evening hours, the search was halted and police remain uncertain as to the motives of the mystery “Arab-appearing” man on the bus who shouted “slaughter the Jews”.
