Health: Getting Through The Chagim

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

It’s that time of the year again – the holiday season.  Perhaps nothing is more challenging than getting through from Rosh Hashanah to Simchas Torah with your health and weight intact.  As daunting and challenging as this may seem, a few little tricks and bit of self-discipline can get you through virtually unscathed.

There are essentially three areas where we all tend to get into trouble. One – the amounts of food we consume sitting at our tables for our festive meals, two – the types of food we eat, and three – the general lack of activity and exercise during the Chagim

Let’s first look at the portion control issue.  There is a mitzvah to eat certain foods during the Chagim.  There is no mitzvah however, to consume mass quantities of anything.  In order to keep a handle on the over-eating problem, try this.  Take a reasonable portion on your plate, and if you are truly still hungry after you eat what’s on your plate, take seconds from a cooked or raw vegetable or whole grain dish.  Remember that drinking water may also make you feel full.  So, drink up before you start your meal.

As far as the second item – the kinds of food we eat… Everyone can make some subtle adjustments in this area as well.  Even though meat and chicken dishes are more popular at this time of year, you can trim the fat from your meat and order lean cuts to begin with.  Skin the chicken and turkey, preferably before cooking, and keep in mind that the white meat is much less fatty than the dark. Also, keep the emphasis on vegetable and grain dishes.  For dessert, go for fresh fruit salads, melons, and sorbets instead of cake and cookies that are laden with sugar and fat.  Keep in mind that most pareve ice creams use chemicals and high-fat based whips.

Item number three  -  lack of activity.  No, don’t go out and do an exercise session during on yom tov!  But, don’t sit around either.  Nice long, brisk walks, particularly after your meals, are a great idea.  There is nothing worse than throwing yourself into metabolic rigor mortis by falling asleep immediately after a meal.  When you are done with the walk, stretch a little and then you can take your nap.

The Chagim are a time to be especially joyful and happy, and to celebrate together with our families. We need not create more stress in our lives than we already have.  So, instead of saying “After the holidays”, resolve to get started with good and healthful habits right now.  Watching your serving sizes, eating healthful choices and staying as active as possible over the Chagim are all ways to “add hours to your day, days to your year and years to your life.”

As this will be my last column until after Succos, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your loyal readership, and to wish you a G’mar Chasima Tova…. a year filled with bracha, hatzlacha and the good health to enjoy it!

Let’s Talk Business: Keeping Clients Happy

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The days pass by in a whirlwind, as you dash from work to Yom Tov to family obligations. Busy as a bee, it can be all too easy to forget and neglect your clients. But during the holiday season, it’s crucial to continue communicating, interacting, and maintaining client relationships to keep your customers happy. And yours.

Mr. Sable owns a printing supply company. Early Monday morning, he receives a call from Max Anderson, who’d like to place an order. With phones ringing, doorbells buzzing, and urgent messages waiting, Mr. Sable quickly takes the order and promises to complete it as soon as he can. But with all the big holiday requests, he doesn’t send out the order until Friday, and it arrives at Max’s business on Tuesday. Max calls again, this time fuming over the Tuesday delivery, ranting and raving about the slowness of the company. Mr. Sable tries to explain about the holidays and jam-packed schedules, but Max is no longer listening.

Max had no idea what to expect. He therefore viewed Mr. Sable’s actions as inexcusably poor service. He was left angry, unsatisfied, and probably took his business elsewhere.
Now imagine if things had been done a little differently. When Max calls to place the order, Mr. Sable says, “Thanks so much for choosing my company. Right now, we’re in the middle of a heavy season and it may take anywhere from 10-14 days for you to receive your order.” When the order arrives on Tuesday- Max is thrilled! Communication with the client makes all the difference in the world.

Here’s a helpful, practical list to ensure that your customers don’t get lost somewhere in the crush of frenzied holiday activity:

1. Internal & External Calendar
It’s a wise idea to prepare a calendar for your clients, highlighting office closures, special holiday hours, and new deadlines. Your employees will also benefit from a clearly delineated calendar that emphasizes office hours and work obligations.

2. Automated Greetings
Be sure to set up automated email replies and phone greetings for the times that the office is closed, detailing exactly when customers can expect a response. This minimizes frustration and aggravation, allowing you to greet satisfied, amiable clients after the holidays.

3. Prioritize!
We are all human. When time is short, it can be impossible to complete all of our regular responsibilities. Determine the truly vital work obligations and focus on these priorities. Doing too much in too little time usually results in exhaustion and a ream of unhappy customers: streamlining your activities will ensure better job performance.

4. Holiday Policies
It’s important to inform your clients of special holiday policies. Deadlines may be tighter, shipping may take longer, certain services may be unavailable: be clear about all the changes that take place during this time so that your customers know what to expect.

5. Plan, Plan, Plan
Ever heard of the five ‘P’s? Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Now, when it’s truly difficult to sit down and take stock- that’s when it’s vital. Planning will allow you to transform this hectic time into neatly catalogued responsibilities.

Be sure to keep the lines of communication open with your clients and let them know exactly what to expect. The last thing you want is to lose customers or face disgruntled, unhappy clients when the holiday season comes to a close. The key is to underpromise and overdeliver.

At the start of this new year, the Ptex Group would like to thank all of our special clients for giving us the opportunity to service you. May you all enjoy the fruits of your labor and see much success in the coming year.

Onward & Upward,

Acheinu Presents An Evening of Chizuk & Chinuch

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

As Yom Kippur approaches, everything we need in the coming year – health, wealth, happiness – is constantly on our minds. Of course, at the top of any parent’s list is the upbringing of their children.

This Elul, Acheinu presents “An Evening of Chizuk and Chinuch,” featuring a fascinating video presentation of answers and hadracha from HaGaon HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, shlita, on the difficult questions of raising and educating our children in today’s environment. Among the many fascinating topics that HaRav Shteinman covers is, “When a child behaves in a negative way, how should a parent deal with it in the most constructive way?” Another question that is dealt with is, “How can parents and mechanchim instill a ‘geshmak’ for learning in our children and students?”

The video will be accompanied by parenting lectures from acclaimed speakers at two locations.  On Tuesday, September 14th, Rabbi Fishel Schachter, Maggid shiur, Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, will deliver a special presentation on parenting. The program, entitled “Parent & Child: A Match Made in Heaven” will feature ideas, techniques and inspiration for parents to help children achieve their full potential.  The event begins 8:20 pm (doors open 7:45 pm) in Flatbush at the Agudah of Ave. L, Bais Binyamin (corner of Avenue L and Nostrand Avenue). Mr. Henri Beer is chairman of the event.

The following evening, a second event will be taking place in the Five Towns/Far Rockaway with world renowned lecturer Rabbi Jonathan Rietti.  On Wednesday, September 15th, Rabbi Rietti will speak on the topic of “Raising Our Children to be Ehrlicher Yidden.” The event will take place in Congregation Shaaray Tefila located at 25 Central Avenue, Lawrence, 8:20 pm. R’ Dov Lebovic is chairman of the Five Towns event.

This event is being sponsored leiluy nishnas Chaya Sara bas R’ Ahron by an anonymous donor on behalf of Acheinu.  Acheinu, the Kiruv movement to develop B’nei Torah, was founded 16 years ago to return unaffiliated Israeli children to Torah.  With great Siyata D’shmaya, Acheinu’s trained staff has a 93% success rate of ensuring that these children remain Shomrei Torah U’mitzvos.

Chabad Shul In Moldova Defaced With Nazi Symbols

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Worshipers were shocked to see swastikas and hate graffiti at the entrance to the Chabad Shul in Moldova.

Congregants at Moldovas largest synagogue were horrified to find hate graffiti and swastikas sprayed onto the walls of their house of worship.
The synagogue is located on Chabad Lubavitch Street, in the center of the city.
The hate-crime has shocked the population since the city has seen very little Antisemitism.

Chief Rabbi of Moldova, Rabbi Zalman Abelsky, responded to the attack saying it was a total shock. Moldova is not a Antisemitic province, he said.

He has promised to work together with Jewish community leaders and friends of Chabad in Moldova to eradicate these misdeeds of marginal groups who call themselves Neo-Nazis.
“Since I began working in this state for over 20 years, I have never encountered such crass behavior”, he added.

Government agencies are working together with Chabad and other Jewish community groups to ensure that such acts are never repeated in the otherwise tolerant and peaceful Moldova.

Schneiderman to Face Donovan for N.Y. Attorney General

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

New York state Senator Eric Schneiderman prevailed among five Democrats to win the party’s nomination for attorney general. He will face Republican Dan Donovan, Staten Island’s district attorney, in the Nov. 2 election.

Schneiderman, 55, captured 34 percent of the vote with 90 percent of election districts reporting, the Associated Press said. His closest competitor, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, a career prosecutor and registered Republican until 2005, received 31 percent.

Donovan, 53, Staten Island’s chief prosecutor since 2003, received the Republican nomination at the party’s June convention and faced no primary opposition.

The attorney general’s office has become a political springboard. Eliot Spitzer, who became governor in 2006 and resigned in March 2008 amid a prostitution scandal, and Andrew Cuomo, this year’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, each served in the post.

Schneiderman, a Harvard-educated lawyer from Manhattan who was elected to the state senate in 1998, led an effort last year to repeal laws requiring prison sentences for drug possession.

Campaigning as the “most progressive” candidate, he touted endorsements from civil-rights activist Al Sharpton, NARAL Pro-Choice New York, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Empire State Pride Agenda, which works for Toeiva rights, and 19 unions, including the 106,000-member United Federation of Teachers.

Chase Customers Cut Off From Online Banking World

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Chase is experiencing an online outage that has left millions of its customers without access to their banking accounts and services.

The Chase bank website is down because of technical issues. Unfortunately this has posed a major hassle to bank customers who use the online banking from Chase.

“Our Web site is temporary unavailable,” reads a message on the Chase.com Web site. “We’re working quickly to restore access. Please log on later.”

For immediate needs, Chase has advised their customers to call 800-935-9935 or go to the closest branch. Right now there is no news on how long it will be before the online banking access is restored.

There are 16.5 million customers who use Chase to bank online. Reports are that the site has been down since at least 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. Thankfully the Chase ATMs are not affected, and the website issue is not a security breach thankfully.

The only bank in the U.S. that is bigger than Chase is Bank of America. Hopefully the website gets back online quickly because it being down causes major issues for customers who use the Chase bank online website.

NTSB: Hudson Collision Was Pilot Error

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The National Transportation Safety Board says the probable causes of a midair collision over the Hudson River last year that killed nine people were the limitations of the “see and avoid” concept and an air traffic controller’s personal phone conversation at the time of the crash.

“The see-and-avoid technique of averting mid-air collisions was not effective because of the difficulty the airplane pilot had in seeing the helicopter until the final seconds before the collision,” the NTSB said in a written statement.

Several Italian tourists visiting New York from Bologna were among the nine victims killed when a sightseeing helicopter and a single-engine plane collided.

Paladino Wins Gubernatorial Primary As Monserrate, Espada Concede

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino declared victory in Tuesday’s GOP gubernatorial primary, defeating former U.S. Representative Rick Lazio in the biggest surprise of the night.

Paladino, a millionaire businessman who had to petition to get his name on the ballot, defeated Lazio, the party favorite, only five months after entering the race. Paladino will now face Democrat Andrew Cuomo in November’s general election.

In New York City, Democrats Hiram Monserrate and Pedro Espada, who together engineered a controversial coup in the state Senate last year, each conceded their races for the Senate.

Espada is currently facing allegations that he violated labor laws at his non-profit Bronx health clinic, while Monserrate was expelled by the Senate in February in connection with a misdemeanor assault against his girlfriend.

New Yorkers cast their votes Tuesday using new electronic voting machines and scanned paper ballots, introduced as part of the Help America Vote Act of 2002. But Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the day was marred for some voters by what he called “disturbing” reports of polling problems.

Voters in Queens, Brooklyn, and as far away as Westchester and Mount Kisco, N.Y. said they ran into some difficulty voting – with many being turned away from their polling sites.

The mayor said at some city polling sites had broken and missing scanners, emergency ballots and poor customer service. He also said that New Yorkers deserve better for the $77 million the city paid BOE to implement the new voting system, and compared the board to the famously corrupt Tammany Hall.

“That is a royal screw-up and it’s completely unacceptable,” said Bloomberg. “It means some voters waited for hours and other voters may not have a chance to cast their ballots at all. We’ve also gotten reports of broken and missing scanners, emergency ballots and poor customer service.”

BOE officials issued a statement saying they are aware that some polling sites have issues with the new voting system.

Democratic candidate for governor Andrew Cuomo faced no primary challenge, but the GOP primary would decide his challenger in November’s general election. For months, Republican and Conservative gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio had been the front-runner, but as Primary Day arrived he was running neck-and-neck with Buffalo businessman Carl Paladino.

Another contentious contest is the five-way race for the Democratic attorney general nod, where State Senator Eric Schneiderman and Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice lead the way.

Bomb Scare At Eiffel Tower Ends

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

A bomb threat that led authorities to use sniffer dogs to inspect the Eiffel Tower and surrounding areas Tuesday turned out to have been a hoax.

The police press office said the telephone threat was reported at 8:20 p.m. and was treated as a routine occurrence; the tower was inspected to determine whether the threat was real.

A telephoned bomb threat also led authorities to briefly evacuate the St. Michel metro station, police said, according to BFM-TV. It was reopened within 30 minutes.

Some 2,000 people had been in the area of the Eiffel Tower and the park in which it sits when the evacuation was ordered, police said, according to BFM-TV. Briefly evacuated were a number a nearby apartment buildings and businesses, according to news reports.

VIDEOS & PHOTOS: Fire In New Square Destroys Home

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Volunteer firefighters were battling a raging house fire Tuesday night on Truman Avenue off Washington Avenue, the village’s main access road. The Journal News reported that one person was reported injured.

A billowing cloud of dark gray smoke covered the neighborhood as bright red flames shot from the two-story house at 12 Truman Ave., near Eisenhower Avenue. The smoke was visible from the Palisades Interstate Parkway.

The fire ate away at the house, destroying the structure while the intense heat melted the siding. Some walls were gutted and holes were seen in the roof.

The fire was reported before 6:08 p.m.

Hatzolah and Spring Hill ambulance corps were on the scene. There was one reported injury, but no details. No firefighters were reported hurt and unknown if anyone was in the house when the fire erupted.

The fire is believed to have started near the side of the house by a sukkah.

Oorah’s Children’s Camp Site Attacked by Radical Islamists on Anniversary of 9/11

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

TheZone.org, the website of Oorah’s Jewish boy’s and girl’s camps, was attacked during the anniversary week of 9/11. The hackers left a message on the website that linked back to another site with the warning: UYARI: TURKISH INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM HACKERS and “Sisteme zarar verilmemistir. Aciklarinizi kapatiniz” (Turkish for “Shut down the system”) along with an ad for the Palestinian Mavi Marmara.

“This may have only been a cyber attack,” said Oorah spokesman Yehudah Meth, “but the message is clear. Who do these people target? A children’s site; a non-political organization that gives physical aid and camp scholarships to families in need. Hate groups have no conscience.”

Oorah was immediately in touch with law enforcement and legal authorities are currently looking into the matter. The original website has been restored.

Oorah’s TheZone.org  is the only website that Oorah outsources. “Our other sites—such as Oorah.org, GotTorah.com, Cucumber.com, and kirbycard.com—were out of harm’s way and we have taken extra precautions to protect them.”

The Zone, which consists of BoyZone and GirlZone, is a sleep-away camp in the Catskill region of Upstate New York. Nearly 1000 children attended the heavily subsidized camp this summer.

VIDEO & PHOTOS: Uman: Presidential Admin Denies Religious Or Nationalist Reasons Behind Deportation Of 10 Pilgrims

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

[UPDATED PHOTO & VIDEO LINKS BELOW] The Presidential Administration has ruled out the possibility that the 10 Hasidic pilgrims that were detained in Uman (Cherkasy region) on September 10 were deported for religious or nationalist reasons.

The presidential press service announced this in a statement.

“The Ukrainian authorities consider the incident that took place between Hasids and local residents in the town of Uman on September 10, 2010, after which 10 pilgrims were deported, as a domestic misunderstanding and does not see any religious or nationalist reasons behind them,” the press service quoted the Presidential Administration’s deputy head Hanna Hermann as saying.

Hetman stressed that that the pilgrims were deported with the aim of enforcing law and order and preventing escalation of the situation.

On behalf of Ukraine, she expressed the hope that the organizers of the pilgrimage will take additional measures in the future to prevent such a situation.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukraine deported 10 Hasidic pilgrims to Israel on September 12 after they were detained in Uman on September 10 for violating public order during detention of people suspected of assaulting two local residents.

French Senate Passes Ban Of Full Muslim Veils

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

France’s Senate has overwhelmingly approved a bill that would ban wearing the Islamic full veil in public. The proposed measure was already backed by the lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, in July. The ban will come into force in six months’ time if it is not overturned by constitutional judges. The ban has strong public support, but critics point out that only a tiny minority of French Muslims wear the full veil.

President Nicolas Sarkozy has backed the ban as part of a wider debate on French identity but opponents say the government is pandering to far-right voters.

Spain and Belgium are debating similar legislation, and with such large-scale immigration in the past 20 or 30 years, identity has become a popular theme across Europe, correspondents say.

On Tuesday, the Senate voted 246 to 1 in favour of the bill.

It will be now sent immediately to France’s Constitutional Council watchdog, which has a month to confirm its legality. Another challenge is possible at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, where decisions are binding.

There are estimated to be only about 2,000 women wearing the full veil in France. The bill makes it illegal to wear garments such as the niqab or burka, which incorporate a full-face veil, anywhere in public. It envisages fines of 150 euros (£119) for women who break the law and 30,000 euros and a one-year jail term for men who force their wives to wear the burka.

Mayor Bloomberg Calls NYC Primary Voting Woes “A Royal Screw-Up” By Elections Board

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Mayor Bloomberg Calls NYC Primary Voting Woes “A Royal Screw-Up” By Elections Board »
Mayor Bloomberg slammed the city Board of Elections over problems voters are encountering with the new electronic voting machines, such as poll workers turning up too late, breakdowns and long waits to cast the new ballots. He called it a “royal screw-up” and “completely unacceptable,” reports our Frank Lombardi.
“Today, unfortunately, we are hearing disturbing reports,” he said at the tail end of a swearing-in ceremony outside City Hall of 150 new volunteers for the NYC Civic Corps.

“It means some voters waited for hours, and other voters may not have a chance to cast their ballots at all,“ Hizzoner continued after blaming the 10-member partisan board for the “royal screw-up.”

“We’ve also gotten reports of broken and missing scanners, emergency ballots and poor customer service. Other counties have also experienced problems, but I’m not sure any of them have been has severe as we’ve seen in our five boroughs,” he said.

Bloomberg noted the city had provided the board with more than $77 million over the past five years to make the transition to new machines, and that didn’t include the $85 million in federal funds to buy the devices.

“There is a total absence of accountability for how the board performs on Election Day because the board is a remnant of the days when Tammany Hall ran New York. New Yorkers deserve better than this, and the time has come to fix it,” he concluded.

The mayor didn’t take questions after his salvo at the board, which he has often attacked in the past.

The Board has just as often complained that it’s been hampered by the city holding up funds until after elections have been held, hurting its ability to adequately plan and prepare for elections.

Maryland High Court to Hear Orthodox Jew’s Claim that Lower Court Violated His Religious Rights

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

A Silver Spring, Maryland Orthodox Jew’s claim that judges in the Montgomery County Circuit Court violated his religious rights by refusing to recess his medical malpractice suit over the Jewish holiday of Shavuos is now before the state’s highest court.

Alexander Neustadter is charging that the judges considered the “efficiency of the docket” to trump his need to observe the Jewish holiday, which observance includes restrictions that prevented him from appearing in court.

Agudath Israel of America filed a “friend of the court” brief  in the Maryland Court of Appeals in support of Mr. Neustadter’s position.  The U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment’s protection of citizen’s free exercise of religion, the brief claims, well covers cases like the one being considered by the Appeals Court.  It notes that Mr. Neustadter filed a number of motions calling the court’s attention to his inability to appear in court during the two days of Shavuos, and the similar inability of his lawyer, who would be acting as his agent, to attend the trial on those days.  The motions were denied.

Although the Agudath Israel brief makes clear that the organization takes no position on Mr. Neustadter’s malpractice suit itself, it takes strong issue with a contention made by the defendant in the suit that the holiday of Shavuos is strictly observed only by “a subsect of the Orthodox Jewish faith” – an assertion Agudath Israel calls “completely untrue and legally irrelevant.”  As to what is legally relevant, the Orthodox group’s brief cites U.S. Supreme Court rulings that being forced to choose between a religious obligation and a court penalty generally constitutes an abrogation of an American’s religious rights.

Only a “compelling state interest,” the brief continues, can legally justify such an abrogation of a fundamental right – and the “efficient and orderly administration of justice” – which the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, the intermediate appellate court, ruled justified the lower court’s rejection of Mr. Neustadter’s motions – does not satisfy that requirement.

Although there are in fact scattered legal precedents for considering the efficient administration of justice to trump individual rights, the Agudath Israel brief cites the particular cases and explains how each of them is qualitatively different from the case before the court.

The Agudath Israel brief was authored by the organization’s Washington Office director and counsel, Rabbi Abba Cohen, Steven A. Loewy, a prominent Rockville, Maryland attorney, assisted by Agudath Israel legal intern Miss Jenny Figa.

“The courts of our country are looked up to by the public as the guardians of the laws of our country,” the Agudath Israel submission concludes. “If a court can trample on an individual’s ability to observe his religion, as was done in this case, the message to employers, teachers, and all others in positions of authority over others is clear: interests of efficiency are more important than respecting an individual’s religious observances.”
