Mayor de Blasio Appoints Joseph Esposiito As Commissioner Of Office Of Emergency Management

Friday, June 27th, 2014

espoMayor Bill de Blasio today announced the appointment of Joseph Esposito to serve as New York City’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) Commissioner. As Commissioner of OEM, Esposito will be responsible for ensuring that New York City is fully prepared to respond to natural and man-made emergencies, coordinating disaster response among all city agencies, and properly educating city residents on disaster preparedness.

Esposito brings decades of hands-on crisis response experience, interagency coordination and citywide operational knowledge to the department. A lifelong New Yorker, Esposito has served in nearly every uniformed position of the NYPD, and during his 12 ½ year tenure as Chief of Department, he led the NYPD’s planning efforts for every major event, and oversaw the NYPD’s response to every major emergency in the past decade, including the September 11th attacks and Hurricane Sandy. As NYPD’s Chief of Department, he directed and controlled the daily operations of the five major enforcement bureaus, and was instrumental in the NYPD’s evolution from a traditional crime-fighting organization to one with a counter-terrorism mission at its center, following the attacks on September 11, 2001.

OEM First Deputy Commissioner, Calvin Drayton will remain in his current role, where he oversees all day to day operations and coordination with city, state, federal, non-profit and private sector partners.

Also today, Mayor de Blasio announced that Dr. Irwin Redlener, founder and director of the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, will serve as an unpaid special advisor, with a focus on emergency management and planning. Dr. Redlener is recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts on preparing for, responding to and recovering from large-scale disasters. As special advisor, Redlener will support and advise the administration’s citywide disaster preparedness and response efforts.

“OEM is on the front line of every major emergency and threat facing the city, and has to work in tandem with other agencies to prepare for and mobilize the city’s response to any major emergency, be it a hurricane, blackout, terror attack, or neighborhood crisis like the March 12th explosion and building collapse in East Harlem,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Joseph Esposito has the good judgment to react and guide the city’s response during an emergency, and also has the experience of working as part of a team to marshal the resources of the city and execute strategies to save lives.”

“I am also pleased to announce that Dr. Irwin Redlener is going to join the administration as Special Advisor to my administration. As an expert in this field, and a physician, his innovative thinking and depth of knowledge of how we can best keep our city’s most vulnerable populations safe will prove to be a tremendous asset and we are lucky to be able to draw from his expertise,” continued Mayor de Blasio.

“Every Mayor’s first priority is keeping New Yorkers safe, and I am honored to be entrusted with the task of upholding this promise in times of citywide crisis. From terrorist attacks to hurricanes, our city has experienced devastating crises—and we have weathered these events in no small part because of the hardworking efforts of OEM. As Commissioner, I will work tirelessly to build on and improve OEM’s strong response record, and deliver the rapid and robust emergency response service New Yorkers deserve,” said incoming Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito.

“Synchronizing the planning and response efforts between firefighters, police officers, sanitation workers, and dozens of other agency staffers in the face of large-scale emergencies is an immense task—and the city’s impressive response record speaks to the skill of OEM’s efforts. I’m honored to join incoming-Commissioner Esposito and the entire OEM workforce to help this city prepare for future emergencies, protect the most vulnerable residents, and ensure our city is as resilient as possible in the years to come,” said incoming Special Advisor Dr. Irwin Redlener.

“NYC OEM is the best Office of Emergency Management in the country, and perhaps anywhere. I have a long working relationship with Joe Esposito, and thus, I know OEM will be in good hands. I look forward to working with him as he comes on board and I am confident that the plans, protocols and outreach programs OEM has developed will continue to serve the city and its citizens well,” said outgoing OEM Commissioner Joseph Bruno.

“Joseph Esposito will be prepared on day one to aid this city in any type of emergency. As NYPD’s Chief of Department, Esposito led the NYPD through some of its most challenging years, and his decades with New York City’s Finest mean he has responded to emergencies of every type and scale. We are glad to have him on board serving the people of New York,” said NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton.

“I’ve known Joe Esposito for many years and worked closely with him in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks,” said FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro. “His commitment to the safety of all New Yorkers – demonstrated time and again during his extraordinary, lengthy career with the NYPD – makes him a great choice to head the Office of Emergency Management. I look forward to partnering with him once again to protect our city and keep all New Yorkers safe.”

“Chief Esposito is a tested and trusted leader, exactly the type of public servant New York City needs to head its Office of Emergency Management. I have been honored to serve alongside him in the New York City Police Department, where he consistently displayed the skills needed for this next chapter in his storied career. As emergencies arise, whatever they may be, our city will benefit from Joe and his steady crisis management,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

“Protecting the safety of all New Yorkers during a major emergency is a critical responsibility and with his extraordinary breadth of experience and proven leadership Joseph Esposito is well-suited to lead our City’s Office of Emergency Management,” said Council Member Vanessa L. Gibson (D-Bronx, 16th CD), chair of the Council’s Public Safety Committee. “I am particularly pleased that he has such extensive experience with the New York City Police Department and has a proven record of that includes the coordination of public safety efforts in the aftermath of the Sept. 11th attack and Hurricane Sandy. I thank Mayor de Blasio for making such a wise choice to lead such an important agency.”

About Joseph Esposito

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Joseph Esposito has spent over forty years serving New York City’s Police Department. Esposito began his career as an 18-year-old police trainee in August 1968, and held every position in the NYPD, including Deputy Inspector, Inspector, Deputy Chief, and Assistant Chief.

In 2000, Esposito was appointed Chief of Department, where he served until 2013. As Chief of department, Esposito directed and controlled the daily operations of the five major enforcement Bureaus—Patrol Services, Detectives, Transit, Housing and Organized Crime Control—within the NYPD. As the longest-serving chief in department history, Esposito presided over a 40 percent drop in violent crime, oversaw the agency’s evolution from a traditional crime-fighting organization to one that embraced the post-9/11 anti-terror mission, and helped introduce the Toys-for-Guns program in Washington Heights.

Esposito earned praise for his leadership during and after the 9/11 attacks, ordering his officers not to charge into the towers after the planes struck and saving countless lives. Esposito also oversaw the NYPD’s response to Hurricane Sandy and its aftermath. When he reached the mandatory retirement age of 63, Esposito was the only four star chief in the NYPD and the highest ranking uniformed member of the NYPD. Esposito has received several of the NYPD’s highest awards, including Combat Cross, the Medal for Valor, and the Medal for Exceptional Merit. He has also received the Otto Raphael award, given by the Shomrim Society and in 2009, received the LT Petrosino Award.

Since May 2013, Esposito has volunteered as Chairperson of the Diocesan Review Board, which reviews complaints of clergy misconduct. Esposito holds a B.A. in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York.

How Hillary Clinton Talks About Her Wealth

Friday, June 27th, 2014

hilHow former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton have discussed their family’s wealth in recent interviews.

Hillary Clinton to ABC News, broadcast June 9:

“We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt. We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea’s education. You know, it was not easy. Bill has worked really hard — and it’s been amazing to me — he’s worked very hard. First of all, we had to pay off all our debts, which was, you know, he had to make double the money because of obviously taxes and then pay off the debts and get us houses and take care of family members.”

___

Hillary Clinton to the Guardian, published June 21:

“They don’t see me as part of the problem because we pay ordinary income tax, unlike a lot of people who are truly well off, not to name names, and we have done it through dint of hard work. We know how blessed we are. We were neither of us raised with these kinds of opportunities, and we worked really hard for them. But all one has to do is look at my record going back to my time in college and law school to know not only where my heart is, but where my efforts have been.”

___

Bill Clinton to NBC News, interviewed June 24:

“She’s not out of touch. And she advocated and worked as a senator for things that were good for ordinary people. And before that, all her life. And the people asking her questions should put this into some sort of context.

“I remember when we were in law school, she was out trying to get legal assistance for poor people. I remember she was working on believing in paid leave for pregnant mothers in the 1970s. So I think if you don’t give the most in-depth answer to a question because you immediately remember what you felt like the day we left as opposed to what it looks like to everybody else now who’s having trouble, you can say, ‘Ok, I’ve got to clean that up,’ which she did.”

___

Hillary Clinton to PBS “NewsHour,” broadcast June 25:

“I shouldn’t have said the five or so words that I said, but my inartful use of those few words doesn’t change who I am, what I’ve stood for my entire life, what I stand for today. Bill and I have had terrific opportunities, both of us, you know, have worked hard, but we’ve been grateful for everything that we’ve been able to achieve, and sadly that’s just not true for most Americans today. So many Americans are feeling, you know, shut out, shut down, the great recession hasn’t ended for too many Americans, wages are flat, families are struggling, not enough new jobs or new businesses are being created, and it’s important that we all try to figure out what we’re going to do, and that’s what I’ve done my entire life, fighting for a higher minimum wage, or family leave, now paid family leave which I believe in, equal pay for equal work, I have a very long record.”

Soldiers in Operation Brothers Return: We are Thinking of the Mothers

Friday, June 27th, 2014

kn

“Look under that tree. I see white bags. Pick them up and shake them out” one of the soldiers of the 202nd Paratroop Battalion taking part in Operation Brothers Return was heard saying as a Walla News journalist was permitted to accompany soldiers for a brief period. They were walking in a forest about eight minutes from Alon Shvut Junction where the boys, Gilad Shaar, Naftali Frenkel and Eyal Yifrach were abducted on Thursday night the eve of 15 Sivan 5774.

The scene is pastoral but the silence is broken by platoon sergeants shouting orders, making sure not a single item that might provide a clue to their whereabouts is missed. Soldier Yisor Dekel says “We know they wear eyeglasses and to find a pair would be helpful”.

The soldiers are in formation, a line stretching over one kilometer in length as they comb the area. They know they mustn’t miss a thing, searching for the smallest clue. The commanders constantly remind them of the importance of the mission and the need to remain vigilant, despite the oppressive heat-wave conditions. The path they take was selected and demarcated by senior officers and they dare not sway from their path.

One of the company commanders, Captain Eren Kahlon received notification of the kidnapping attack two weeks ago, on Friday morning 15 Sivan at 08:00. All of the soldiers who were off base were activated and at 16:30 on that erev Shabbos, they began searching in the area where the burned remains of the Hyundai sedan was found, near the PA village of Dura.

Captain Kahlon is no stranger to the area having been stationed there in the past. In actuality, back in 2011 he was almost killed when an IDF force spotted him, thinking he was a terrorist and opened fire at him. He proudly told Walla that when the call came to his troops on that Friday morning, there as a 100% response. Not a single soldier failed to comply with the emergency call-up, realizing the severity of the situation.

The search continues, becoming increasingly complex and difficult with each passing day but Kahlon states “We don’t give up and we will continue until they are found”. Some of the soldiers explained “We are thinking about and seeing the faces of the mothers. We will continue until they are found”.

“Just put yourself in the place of the family of these boys. What would you do” Kahlon added.

The brigade commander Colon Eliezer Toledano is out in the field among his troops. He is there to command as well as to encourage them. He explains his soldiers ask just how accurate the intelligence information is that led to the search, for the care and they are involved. “Not a single soldier has asked ‘when are we going home’ for they understand the mission and they remain committed” the colonel explained.

There are shouts and calls from down a deep wadi or another hidden area and for the soldiers, there were times where they believed the boys have been found, but to date, this has not occurred. One soldier explained they found freshly poured cement at one point. “We ran like crazy. We dug and dug but nothing was found”.

When some of the soldiers were asked “Do you think this is going to lead to anything? Perhaps it should be called off” they respond “If this were your brother what would you do” they exclaim, determined to continue until the boys are located.

When they began Kahlon told his troops that “There are professionals who are going to accompany us and give us direction. Do not be afraid to comment, suggest or ask” he explained. This is exactly what the soldiers are doing as morale remains high.

So as the families and Am Yisrael prepare for yet another Shabbos without knowing the location of the captives, the tefilos continue amid the constant hope that the word will come at any moment that the three bnei yeshivos have been found alive and well.

NY Loans To Help Homeowners At Risk Of Foreclosure

Friday, June 27th, 2014

foreNew York’s attorney general has announced a new small loan program intended to help homeowners at risk of foreclosure.

Eric Schneiderman announced the new program on Thursday. Called the New York State Mortgage Assistance Program, the initiative is starting on Long Island this September before being opened up to the entire state in October.

Schneiderman says the loans of up to $40,000 are intended to help homeowners pay tax liens, second or third mortgages, or back mortgage payments that have prevented them from being able to refinance their homes.

The Democrat says often homeowners can’t modify their mortgage to avoid foreclosure because of a relatively small outstanding debt.

The initiative is patterned after a similar program in New York City.

FM Lieberman Meets US Secretary Kerry in Paris

Friday, June 27th, 2014

FM Liberman meets with US Secretary Kerry

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman met in Paris with US Secretary of State John Kerry. They discussed developments in the Middle East and Israel’s relations with the Palestinians following the establishment of the unity government and the abduction of the three teenage boys.

FM Lieberman thanked Secretary Kerry for the United States’ firm position regarding the seriousness of the kidnapping. He conveyed to the Secretary the request of the parents of the three boys to meet with him.

The foreign minister commented that given the conditions prevailing today in the Middle East, stating “It is impossible to reach a separate arrangement between Israel and the Palestinians. Rather, we must reach an overall regional agreement. Israel’s long-standing conflict is not only with the Palestinians but with the Arab world of which the Palestinians are is a part. Therefore, we must reach an agreement that will include the moderate Arab states, the Palestinians and the Israeli Arabs. This is the first time that a strategic consensus of interests has been created between the moderate elements in the Arab world and Israel, as both must contend with the Iranian threats, worldwide jihad and al-Qaeda, as well as the overflow of the conflict in Syria and Iraq to neighboring states”.

Lieberman stated there is a basis for the creation of a new political structure in the Middle East, emphasizing that, beyond the Palestinian issue, any arrangement must also include the Arab states and Israeli Arabs.

Regarding events in Iraq, FM Lieberman commented that “Iraq is dissolving before our eyes, and the establishment of an independent Kurdish state is probably inevitable. The radical forces in Iraq will try to undermine the stability of the entire Gulf area, first of all Kuwait, and Israel can provide support and assistance to the moderate Arab states against the extremists of the Arab world”.

Regarding the ongoing negotiations with Iran, FM Lieberman noted that “A bad agreement with the Iranians that will allow them to become a nuclear threshold state will lead to a nuclear arms race throughout the Middle East, further undermining stability in the region”.

The as-yet unopened businesses – a café/pizza shop, a deli and a bakery – are among several buildings on Main Street owned by Lamm, who is building a 396-home Hasidic development and a private girls school to serve it. The project has sparked a cauldron of controversy in this eastern Sullivan County village of some 400. Several of the buildings are already occupied by Hasidim.

Eida Ravaad On Sentence Of Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky

Friday, June 27th, 2014

lupEida Chareidis Ravaad HaGaon HaRav Moshe Sternbuch Shlita had some harsh words for Justice David Rosen, the Tel Aviv District Court judge who sentenced Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky to six years imprisonment on his Holyland real estate conviction.

The senior Eida Chareidis rov spoke out on Wednesday 27 Sivan 5774 during a shiur in Ramot Yerushalayim. The rov stated that in this week’s parsha, Chukas, we say ‘זאת התורה’, teaching us today we must constantly strive to enhance our Avodas Hashem. The rav stated that recently we saw Israel’s secular judicial system target a man who is battling cancer R”L, one whose entire life has been dedicated to collecting tzedaka to assist others. “Now they want to put him in prison” the rov explained, calling the verdict “cruel”.

The rav expounded on the failures of the system and the justices, quoting Tehillim 147:20, “ומשפטים בל ידעום” and that we are different for we follow the true justice of the Torah HaKadosha and not their secular ways which are contrary to Torah.

More Countries Adding Graphic Warnings To Smokes

Friday, June 27th, 2014

smokIndonesia became the newest country to mandate graphic photo warnings on cigarette packs on Tuesday, joining more than 40 other nations or territories that have adopted similar regulations in recent years. The warnings, which showcase gruesome close-up images ranging from rotting teeth and cancerous lungs to open tracheotomy holes and corpses, are an effort to highlight the risks of health problems related to smoking. Research suggests these images have prompted people to quit, but the World Health Organization estimates nearly 6 million people continue to die globally each year from smoking-related causes. The tobacco industry has fought government efforts to introduce or increase the size of graphic warnings in some countries. Here are a few places where pictorial health warnings have made headlines:

____

INDONESIA:

THE LAW: 40 percent of pack covered by graphic photos.

TIMING: Deadline to be on shelves was June 24.

BACKGROUND: Many tobacco companies missed Tuesday’s deadline to comply with the new law requiring all cigarette packs in stores to carry graphic warning photos. Indonesia, a country of around 240 million, has the world’s highest rate of male smokers at 67 percent and the second-highest rate overall. Its government is among the few that has yet to sign a World Health Organization treaty on tobacco control.

____

THAILAND:

THE LAW: Portion of cigarette packs that must be covered with graphic health warnings rising from 55 percent to 85 percent.

TIMING: Change will take effect in September.

BACKGROUND: Last year, the Public Health Ministry issued a regulation increasing the level of coverage to 85 percent. Tobacco giant Philip Morris and more than 1,400 Thai retailers sued, and a court temporarily suspended the order. On Thursday, the Supreme Administrative Court ruled that the regulation can take effect before a lower court reaches a final verdict in the lawsuit.

____

AUSTRALIA:

THE LAW: No cigarette brand logos permitted; graphic health warnings required on 75 percent of front and 90 percent of back.

TIMING: Plain packaging law went into effect in 2012.

BACKGROUND: Australia became the first country in the world to mandate plain cigarette packs with no brand logo or colors permitted. Instead, the packs are solid brown and covered in large graphic warnings. Tobacco companies fought the law, saying it violated intellectual property rights and devalued their trademarks, but the country’s highest court upheld it. Figures released this month by the country’s Bureau of Statistics found that cigarette consumption fell about 5 percent from March 2013 to the same period this year. The World Trade Organization has agreed to hear complaints filed by several tobacco-growing countries, but other governments have expressed interest in passing similar laws. Smokers make up 17 percent of Australia’s population.

____

UNITED STATES:

THE LAW: No graphic pictures on packs.

TIMING: The government stepped away from a legal battle with tobacco companies in March 2013.

BACKGROUND: There are currently no pictorial warnings on cigarette packs in the U.S. After the tobacco industry sued, a Food and Drug Administration order to include the graphic labels was blocked last year by an appeals court, which ruled that the photos violated First Amendment free speech protections. The government opted not to take the case to the U.S. Supreme Court, but will instead develop new warnings. About 18 percent of adult Americans smoke.

____

PHILIPPINES:

THE LAW: Graphic warning legislation approved this month requires 50 percent of bottom of the pack to be covered by graphic warnings.

TIMING: Legislation awaits president’s signature.

BACKGROUND: The Philippines is expected to join a handful of other countries that put graphic warnings at the bottom of their packs, meaning they are not visible when displayed on store shelves. Anti-smoking advocates say labels on the bottom of the packs are less effective, and have denounced tobacco industry involvement in the implementation process. Health officials said around 17 million people in the country of 96 million, or 18 percent, smoked in 2012.

____

URUGUAY:

THE LAW: Graphic warnings cover 80 percent of packs.

TIMING: Regulations implemented in 2010.

BACKGROUND: Uruguay, a leader in strict tobacco controls, mandated what were the largest graphic warnings ever in 2010. Eighty percent of packs must be covered by the labels, including one depicting a person smoking a battery to show that cigarettes contain the toxic metal cadmium. Uruguay has backed Australia at the WTO, telling the trade body that smoking is “the most serious pandemic confronting humanity.” Philip Morris International sued Uruguay over the law; the case is still pending.

NYC: Former NYPD Chief Of Dept Joseph Esposito To Lead OEM

Friday, June 27th, 2014

espoMayor de Blasio is set to appoint Former NYPD Chief Of Department Joseph Esposito – who retired in 2013 – to head the city’s Office of Emergency Management, sources told YWN.

Esposito ended his 44-year career with the NYPD last March at 63, the mandatory retirement age for uniformed police officers.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) was originally formed in 1996 as part of the Mayor’s Office under Rudolph W. Giuliani. By a vote of city residents in 2001 it became an independent agency, headed by a Commissioner who reports to the Mayor. In 2006 the office was reorganized under the Deputy Mayor for Administration by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg.

The agency is responsible for oversight and development of the City’s emergency management plans.

OEM regularly tests plans by conducting drills and exercises, and responds to emergencies to ensure that other agencies not only follow these plans, but to foster communication amongst the responding agencies.

OEM also operates the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) where city, state and federal agencies join representatives from the private and nonprofit sectors to coordinate complex responses to emergencies and disasters.

The agency also developed and runs the Notify NYC emergency alert program, by which citizens can sign up to receive phone and email alerts about emergencies and events happening in their neighborhoods.

Esposito entered the NYPD in August 1968 at 18 years old as a Police Trainee. In April 1971, he was appointed a Patrolman, and began his career on patrol in the 77th Precinct in Brooklyn. He was promoted to Detective in May 1983, Sergeant in September 1983, Lieutenant in February 1986, Captain in June 1989, Deputy Inspector in August 1993, Inspector in August 1994, Deputy Chief in September 1996, and Assistant Chief in December 1997.

On August 25, 2000, he was promoted to the position of Chief of Department, making him the highest ranking uniformed member of the department. In his career, Esposito has served in numerous commands of the department, including the 77th, 10th, 83rd, 109th, 34th, 66th, and 83rd Precincts, and in the Narcotics Division and the Detective Bureau. In his last assignment before becoming Chief of Department, Esposito was the Commanding Officer of the Strategic and Tactical Command (S.A.T.COM) Brooklyn North.

He has earned some of the department’s most honored and prestigious awards, including the Combat Cross, the Medal for Valor, and the Exceptional Merit award.

Hatzalah of Miami-Dade hosted an exciting Family Fun Day and BBQ at The Shul of Bal Harbour this past Sunday. The event had fun for all ages; moon bounces, an obstacle course, balloon artist and face painters. There was plenty of food for all, and a photo booth where families were able to dress up their kids as Hatzalah members and seat them on Hatzalah’s motorcycle ERU. The turn out was overwhelming with nearly 400 people attending.

In January, Hatzalah of Miami-Dade extended its coverage area from Aventura, North Miami Beach and Miami Beach to include Surfside, Bal Harbour, and Bay Harbor Islands. Through this wonderful event community members from all three areas were able to learn about the benefits and services this incredible organization now has available in their thriving community.

Thanks to the hard work of the dedicated responders and volunteers, the event was a tremendous success.

New York City Council Renames Street in Honor of Rabbi Michoel Ber Weissmandl

Friday, June 27th, 2014

weiYesterday the New York City Council passed legislation sponsored by Councilman David G. Greenfield to rename 50th Street between 14th and 15th Avenues in Borough Park, Brooklyn ‘Rabbi Weissmandl Way,’ in honor of the life and memory of the Rabbi Chaim Michoel Dov Weissmandl, known as Reb Micheol Ber. Thanks to Councilman Greenfield’s legislation, the City will install permanent street signage along 50th Street commemorating the Rabbi and his extraordinary life.

Rabbi Weissmandl was a heroic resistant fighter whose efforts saved thousands of Jews during World War II. He dedicated several years of his life to saving Slovakian Jews. Thanks to the creation of his “Europe Plan,” he convinced German and Slovakian authorities to delay the mass deportation of Jews for two years. He also appealed to foreign leaders worldwide for assistance and alerted them to the actions of the Nazis across Europe. As a result of his efforts to save Jewry, Rabbi Weissmandl was arrested dozens of times and was even sent to Auschwitz, but managed to jump from a moving train and escape to Switzerland shortly thereafter.

In addition to his efforts on the international stage to save countless Jews, Rabbi Weissmandl also left an indelible mark on communities through New York, especially Borough Park. Upon his arrival in the United States in 1946, Rabbi Weissmandl re-established the Nitra Yeshiva, first in New Jersey and then in Mount Kisco. In the time since, Nitra shuls have been established in many communities, including two in Borough Park and one in Williamsburg.

“Rabbi Weissmandl was a genuine hero, a great Talmid Chochom and leader for thousands of Jews throughout the world. Renaming a stretch of 50th Street between 14th and 15th Avenue, the location of a Nitra shul, is the least we can do in tribute to this great Rabbi to ensure his legacy and heroism lives on in our community for generations to come,” said Councilman David G. Greenfield.

The New York City Council has the authority to rename street blocks in commemoration of New Yorkers who have made an enduring and lasting impact on large segments of the City’s population and whose importance to the City is a result of exemplary acts. No person is more befitting of this honor than Rabbi Weissmandl. A ceremony to unveil the new street name will be announced later this summer.
