BREAKING: Councilman Greenfield Joins Community Leaders Endorsing Kalman Yeger For City Council

Last night, Councilman David Greenfield convened a meeting of community leaders from throughout the 44th Council District of Boro Park, Bensonhurst, Midwood and Kensington. After a lengthy discussion of five possible candidates to replace Greenfield on the ballot this September, the group overwhelmingly chose to support Kalman Yeger for City Council. Leaders of the Bobov, Satmar, Ger, Belz, Sephardic, Ashkenaz & Catholic communities have all pledged their support to Kalman Yeger. This morning, the Committee on Vacancies met and voted to designate Kalman Yeger as Councilman Greenfield’s replacement for the Democratic nomination.

“I’ve known Kalman Yeger for 20 years. He is one of the smartest, hardest-working and most honest people I know. He has worked for Borough Presidents, Senators and Council Members. Kalman understands the struggles of regular people: he rents an apartment, rides the subway, pays yeshiva tuition and works hard for his family. He’s the best candidate to replace me in City Hall and I wholeheartedly endorse him,” said Councilman David Greenfield.

Kalman Yeger began his career in public service at the age of 19 as a community liaison and assistant to Councilman Lloyd Henry. Yeger currently serves as Counsel and the Executive Director of Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.’s election committee. Since 2010, he has also served as a Senior Advisor and is currently Counsel to New York City Councilman David Greenfield. He has advised countless public officials, including Councilman Alan Maisel, former Council Members Lew Fidler, David Yassky and Michael Nelson, Senator Simcha Felder, Borough Presidents Melinda Katz and Eric Adams, and former Borough President Fernando Ferrer.

Yeger is a graduate of Touro College and New York Law School, where he was accepted with the distinction of a Dean Scholar. Yeger was listed on the Dean’s List four times during his studies at New York Law School, and was awarded the Public Service Certificate “in recognition of work devoted to the public good while a student.”

A lifelong resident of Midwood, Kalman has been a member of Community Board 14 for the last 17 years, and has served on the Board of Directors of his local civic association.

The Met Council on Jewish Poverty, New York’s premier Jewish charity, announced yesterday that it was hiring Greenfield as its next CEO, subject to regulatory approval. Greenfield will lead the $30 million tezedakah with a staff of nearly 200 beginning in January 2018, after completing his term in office.

  1. I don’t think even in the Soviet Union things were done this opaquely. Can we get NAMES of these “leaders” of the various Chasidish groups, can we get names of the supposed 4 other people who were considered (as if they had a chance) for this position? The guy lives OUTSIDE the district and always has and mounted a campaign against the only other fellow frum person on the city council and now he wants the frum in BP and parts of Flatbush to just go with this?

  2. Kalman is qualified and knows the system as well as anyone. He’s an expert on campaign finance and has no outside conflicts. I can’t think of anyone else with Kalman’s knowledge and integrity who would be able to do more for the frum community and others in the district. Will be a great addition to the City council.

  3. This is a dark day for the BP neighborhood. For an absolute dedicated, selfless, true public servant to be leaving the important office of service to our community- perhaps the most dedicated we’ve had in years – to leave for greener pastures and to leave us in the hands of…..
    BooHoo!

  4. This is the biggest chutzpah! This last thing greenfield has done, he has decided for us were to allocate our money which he claims he got for us. He and the other menuvalim around him decide what’s good for us. Where is the das torah? Are people in this community so stupid that they will let this dangerous thing happen? He leaves when he is one of the most powerful members of council and about to be more powerful. How dare he tell us what to do? No no no he is forcing us to vote for his friend and its done with such chutzpah. And this community will keep on falling for this!

    Just for proof.
Think about it, to run on a ballot you need i think minimum 1500 signatures you need to put your name up on the Ballot. And tomorrow is the deadline for that. As you see they gave no-one else in the Democratic side time to set up a run against him. This was planed for a long time.

  5. So this was conveniently timed for the day after the deadline to file to be on the primary ballot. This way the vacancy committee whose members were appointed by the incumbent get to choose his replacement on the primary ballot. Mere happenstance of course!
