Schumer Calls On Putin To Denounce Registering Of Jews In Eastern Ukraine

putU.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer released the following statement calling on President Putin to denounce pro-Russian forces’ push to register Jewish citizens in Eastern Ukraine

“President Putin has accused the Ukrainians recently of being anti-Semitic, but now it is pro-Russian forces that are engaged in these grotesque acts. President Putin should strongly denounce these acts and if he is truly sincere, he has the influence to stop them. We hope he will. We have seen this horror movie before, and we’re not going to abide by it.”

  1. Schlumer should be demanding the Ukrainian government denounce it, not the Russian government. It happened in Ukraine and reports indicate is was done by supporters of the Ukrainian government (to make it look like it was from their enemies.)

  2. There is no reason for Schmuer (or anyone in the Jewish community) to be taking sides. The evidence is that the flyer was put there as a rude political statements, and it appears as likely as not that the flyers were produced by Ukrainian nationalists as a disinformation campaign. The Russians are fairly consistent in denouncing any trace of neo-Naziism (remember that it was the Russians who did most of the fighting against the Germans in World War II). While there are some neo-Nazi wannabees in Ukraine (who are ignoring the fact that Hitler wanted to enslave all Slavs), and there was widespread collaboration in Ukraine during WWII, the leadership of the current Ukrainian movement is dominated by those who want Ukraine to by a EU/NATO type state with western style democracy.
