Movie Theater to Open in the Mamilla area of Yerushalayim on Shabbos

shabbosThe Orlando Cinema chain is planning to open a small movie theater in Beit Shmuel, near Mamilla in Yerushalayim. According to a Kikar Shabbos report, the theater will be open on Shabbos and it is likely to be the next battleground for shmiras Shabbos in the capital. Orlando currently operates branches in Tel Aviv and other areas.

Kikar reports “chareidi elements” have announced they will tolerate the theater operating on Shabbos and that they will protest if need be. Rabbi Yosef Rosenfeld of the Vaad Shabbos is quoted in the report citing the severity of operating the theater on Shabbos, particularly due to its proximity to the Old City.

Rav Rosenfeld reports the theater is scheduled to open its doors in September calling on chareidi councilmen to begin acting in City Hall to prevent the planned opening. The rabbi adds that if officials reject their request not to operate on Shabbos, protests will follow and everything possible will be done to prevent the theater from operating on Shabbos.

Jerusalem Councilman (Hisorarus) Ofir Berkowitz told Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) “We welcome the opening of the theater in Jerusalem, particularly since it provides cultural activities and entertainment on Shabbos in the city”.

  2. #7 Hashem is giving them a “gentle” reminder that they have to keep Shabbos and learn Torah. Boruch Hashem there are no tunnels…yet. Anyone with half an eye can see that their (and our) actions are causing these terrible things to happen.

  3. Momma has the best idea.
The neighbors will get sick of the noise and garbage and they’ll pressure the owner to give in.
Too bad we don’t have people like HaRav Kook or Rav Aryeh Levine today, who could melt any heart, but with today’s Shabbos desecrators there is no embarrassment. HaRav Kook of Rehovot told my husband that in the old days non-observant people would come up to him and say, “My grandfather was rabbi,” but today the say,”My grandfather was a maskil.” R-L.

  4. This is all we need! As if missles from the Hamas aren’t enough!! this brazen act destroys both the Holy Shabbos and the unity all of Clal Yisrael feels for one another!

  5. Ein issur chal al haissur. On a serious note this is a terrible chillul Hashem brabim and people wonder why rockets are launched towards Israel.
