Schumer: Do More To Address Social Security Theft

idtSen. Charles Schumer is calling for a so-called “bill of rights” for victims of Social Security identity theft.

The New York Democrat said Wednesday that he’s pushing legislation that would enhance the penalties for thieves who use a person’s Social Security number without their consent.

The measure would also create a new office to help victims and set up an automated system to notify individuals when someone changes how Social Security benefits are deposited into their account.

Schumer says credit card companies and banks already have policies to help consumers whose cards and accounts have been compromised. He says the federal government should follow suit by doing more to help victims of Social Security identity theft.
