Millions of New Yorkers ride the subways each day, and the NYPD works diligently to ensure that it remains the safest transit system in the world. At the helm of the NYPD Transit Division is Chief Joseph Fox, who has been running the Transit Division since 2011. Taking his job very seriously, Fox was seen this week visiting high profile subway stations around the city, making sure that all available resources were being properly utilized to keep the subways as safe as possible. As YWN reported earlier this week, the NYPD has stepped up security in Times Square amid concerns that the mounting hostilities between the United States and the Islamic State group could have repercussions on U.S. soil.

New York Police Department officials asserted that there’s no credible information pointing to any terror plot against New York City. Nevertheless, they said residents and visitors will see more patrols and other signs of heightened security in Times Square, the subways and elsewhere during the upcoming Jewish holidays and for the arrival of international dignitaries at the United Nations General Assembly.

Chief Fox was appointed in 2011 to lead the 2,600 NYPD cops assigned to police the subway system. A 33-year veteran of the NYPD, he started in the 70th Precinct in Flatbush, Brooklyn. He worked his way through the ranks, spending most of his career as a cop in Brooklyn and later as a borough commander in Queens before being appointed commander of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South.

Colleagues and community leaders say he’s known for interacting with residents, and has in fact brought the hands-on approach to his transit post (SEE PHOTOS BELOW), constantly visiting stations and warning riders to be vigilant.
