Will the Committee Appoint the First Religious Female Justice to the Supreme Court?

chnThe Judicial Appointment Committee convenes on Sunday 26 Elul at which time the members of the committee will decide if a justice affiliated with the dati leumi community will be appointed to the Supreme Court. The new appointment will replace Justice Edna Arbel, who is retiring and the court’s president, Justice Asher Grunis, who is stepping down in January 2015.

It appears one slot will likely go for former attorney general, Manny Mazuz. The second slot is however allocated for a woman. Two of them, Yael Wilner and Devorah Berland are members of the dati leumi community.

It is reported that if either receives the appointment, it will be the first time a woman from the dati leumi community is appointed to the nation’s highest court. Berland did serve on the court in 2006-2007, but only in a temporary capacity.
