NJ: Rabbi’s SUV Destroyed In ‘Suspicious’ Fire On Rosh Hashanah

arsonPolice are still investigating a fire that engulfed a rabbi’s car at his Atlantic City synagogue early Thursday morning.

Rabbi David Kushner told the Philadelphia Daily News that he parked his SUV in the lot at Rodef Sholom Synagogue in Atlantic City Wednesday night prior to conducting Rosh Hashanah services.

Kushner recently became the synagogue’s rabbi, the newspaper reported.

After spending the night at his family’s shore house, Kushner returned to the synagogue Thursday to find his vehicle destroyed by a fire.

Synagogue leaders said that no one in the congregation had received any threats prior to the fire, including Kushner, according to a report from WMGM-TV.

Police haven’t released an official report on the fire, the Daily News reported, but Kushner said investigators told him that the fire is “suspicious.”

“I think someone picked the car because it was parked at the synagogue during worship,” Kushner said. “It’s almost impossible to say it was a coincidence.”

Kushner said he lost some valuables in the fire, including equipment he uses as a volunteer EMT in Monmouth County, N.J.

But the biggest toll, he said, can’t be measured in dollars.

“We have an older congregation, comprised of many Holocaust survivors,” he said. “To see this during the High Holy Days raised emotions in them that haven’t come out for years.”
