US Travel Advisory on Jerusalem’s Old City

oThe US Embassy in Tel Aviv has issued an advisory for US citizens regarding travel to the Old City of Jerusalem. The message cites the consulate in Jerusalem warns citizens against traveling to the Old City and visiting Har Habayis. The warning also includes areas in “East Jerusalem”, referring to predominately Arab areas where there has been a sharp increase in violence and attacks in recent weeks and months. US citizens are advised not to visit those areas.

“Additionally, entry restrictions into the Old City and onto the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount compound may further fuel tensions, particularly in the areas of Ras El Amoud, Silwan, Mt. of Olives, Issawiyeh, Wadi El Joz, Lions & Damascus Gates neighborhoods and the Old City following Friday prayers. The Israel National Police (INP) has a heavy presence, has set up roadblocks at major junctions leading to the Old City and may deploy in large numbers in neighborhoods that experience clashes. INP restricting access to certain neighborhood or adjacent roadways in police riot gear (helmets and batons) serves as a clear indicator that clashes are ongoing in the area and it is advisable to leave the location immediately.

“We remind you of the possibility of ongoing clashes. These events underscore the importance of situational awareness. We remind you to be aware of your surroundings at all times, to monitor the media, to avoid demonstrations, and to follow directions of emergency responders.

“We strongly recommend that US citizens traveling to or residing in Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate”.

  1. We also strongly recommend not to travel to cities in the US like Chicago -the presidents home town, New York and parts of California where illegals and some other nefarious characters reside.
