Maran Rav Steinman on Women Studying in College

shtMaran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita is quoted once again speaking out against women attending a college. The gadol hador is quoted reiterating that a woman must study in Beis Yaakov only.

The gadol hador’s comments follow statements from Shas leader Aryeh Deri that Mrs. Edna Bar-Shalom, who heads the Chareidi College attended by many women, that she would work with Shas to advance the position of chareidi women.

The principal of a chareidi institution then brought the question to Rav Sheinman about women studying in the college to which the gadol hador replied “Certainly this is prohibited to go and study in such places. We must stand firm on the matter as difficult as it may be. One will receive great reward in Olan Haba for this. Regarding one’s obligation to do hishtadlus to earn a livelihood, certainly studying in a forbidden environment is not “hishtadlus”.

  1. The article omitted that Adina Bar Shalom is the daughter of Rav Ovdiah Yosef and he himself not only gave his blessing to the university he taught some classes there.

  2. I would like to know what a good plan to make a parnasah?

First of all, what exactly is the issur? Fine, it may not be totally extreme chareidi hashkafa, but why is it assur?

I understand why it would be assur for a man, maybe because of Histaklus at women in the class, but where is it assur for a women, why just beis yaakov?

Also, if men are heavely encouraged to learn all day (implying that getting a parnasah is a b’dieved) leaving the wife to watch all the kids and make a parnasah, how is this helpful to the system?

I am chareidi, and the system is getting more and more twisted by the year, abd its really not real authentic judaism anymore! (Men are supposed to go out making a parnasah, and women are supposed to be in the home with the children).

    Can someone please explain this.

  3. Rav Steinman has on occasion given tacit permission to girls to study in elite educational facilities,

So as always, what must be stated for general policy is different than nuances for individuals

  4. Yes I can they want us dumb poor and dependent on other. You know those who went to college and will burn for it but our money is good

  5. Note that he didn’t say college was ossur per se, just that the environment made it ossur. So when anyone says that we can’t make proper colleges for women because “Rav Shteinman says it’s ossur for women to go to college” we’ll know they’re lying.

  6. #2#4 et al

You ought to understand that [ translation of] addresses given in a certain milieu, may have less than full pertinence to your own family and community

  7. Who needs college? go into business like the B and H owners or the many Real Estate/mortgage mavens that are frum. The Novominsker discussed this at the Agudah convention of not questioning rabbonim.

  8. There are so many college grads without parnasa and many without a degree who are doing very well As Rebbe Yehuda haNasi said, there is no profession that doesn’t have it’s rich and poor.

  9. “go into business like the B and H owners”

Most people do not have the business skills to succeed like B&H. And even B&H’s business model won’t work when nobody has adequate income to buy their products.

  10. Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to ascertain the context that our gedolim are speaking in when all we are given is a tiny snippet of background information. For all we know, the Gadol Hador might have been referring to coed or even all female secular colleges, as often times the person asking the question to the gadol doesn’t give him all the necessary details. He may also be speaking to a certain segment to the chareidi population, wherease for others it may be mutter. This is the danger of posting quotes from gedolim that are usually said in private and in a certain context, and not necessarily supposed to be made public and applicable to everyone. Then again, it may be applicable to everyone. The point is: who knows!

  11. For every owner of B&H or real Estate there are 10 families who are poor and need help

Just go to KRM in Borough Park and see how many people are using eBT cards there

  12. Very dangerous to post quotes like this. Bais Yaakov is a high school system, and the question was about post high school education in a Chareidi institution, so we do not know what was asked and what was answered, and for whom he was speaking about. Since Bais Yaakov is a high school, ceratinly this does not answer the question we think he was asked. How do we know the Rav knew the question was about post high school skills training in a chareidi all girls setting? I would like to see a video of the entire conversation, with a video of the entire situation explained and the entire answer. As someone said above, sometimes the answer is different depending on whom it is concerning. For example, a Gadol Hador is very against Bochurim not only not joining the IDF, of course, but also very against even obtaining and signing an exemption form, and he communicated this. But it was found out that certain Bochrim close to that Rav had all obtained exemptions. So one should always ask his or her own Rav Shailahs and not rely on heresay snippets of quotes second hand because the persons particular situation with all details needs to be put into the question.
