Man Charged In Connection To Fire That Ripped Through A Brooklyn Synagogue [VIDEOS/PHOTOS]

(VIDEO & PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE)

A fire broke out at a Brooklyn Synagogue on Monday morning.

At around 9:15 AM, the FDNY requested a Second Alarm response to the “B’nai Adath Kol Beth Yisrael Synagogue” located at 45 Patchen Avenue near Greene Avenue in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

The synagogue is an African-American Hebrew Israelite congregation. It has been in the location since 1967.

Photos and videos from the scene showed flames burning through the roof of the structure.

The FDNY pulled all its members out of the building and were fighting the fire from tower-ladders and exterior operations. Firefighters told CBS2’s Marc Liverman they expect the building was a total loss.

One of the photos from the scene showed the building was undergoing some type of construction.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

WABC reported a 71-year-old man was facing charges in connection with the fire.

The fire was not being labeled an arson, and the man charged is believed to be a worker who accidentally started the fire during use of a blowtorch. He was identified as Caesar Raynor, charged with two counts of reckless endangerment.

Rabbi Baruch Yehudah told Liverman the building had been there since the 1700s and has been a synagogue since about 1860.

“That is absolutely my intention to rebuild right here on this corner,” Yehudah told Liverman. “If God gives us the strength and the ability, right here on this corner B’Nai Adath will rise again, right here on this corner.” [See video of the interview below]

  1. If the “Rabbi” is correct, it was a synagogue long before there were “Hebrew Israelites.” Anybody know the history of this building?
