NYPD: Overall Crime Reduction in New York City Continues into 2018


New York City experienced a continued reduction in index crime for January 2018 continuing last year’s downward trend. There were 7,484 index crimes for January 2018 compared with 8,096 for January 2017, or -7.6%. Shooting incidents remained even, with 58 incidents in January 2018 compared with 58 incidents in January 2017.

There were 20 murders in January, four fewer or -16.6%, compared with January 2017. There were 113 rapes reported in January, compared with 107 in January 2017. This is an increase of six crimes, or +5.6%. There were 1,128 robberies reported in January 2018, compared with 1,242 in January 2017. This is a reduction of 114 crimes, or -9.2%. There were 1,489 felonious assaults reported in January 2018, compared with 1,633 in January 2017. This is a reduction of 144 crimes, or -8.8%. There were 964 burglaries reported in January 2018, compared with 1,094 in January 2017. This is a reduction of 130 crimes, or -11.9%. There were 3,339 grand larcenies reported in January 2018, compared with 3,533 in January 2017. This is a reduction of 194 crimes, or -5.5%. There were 432 grand larceny autos (GLA) reported in January 2017, compared with 463 in January 2017. This is a reduction of 31 crimes, or -6.7%.

There were 191 crimes reported in the Transit Bureau in January 2018, compared with 211 in January 2017. This is a reduction of 20 crimes, or -9.5%. There were 398 crimes reported in the Housing Bureau in January 2018, compared with 408 in January 2017. This is a reduction of 10 crimes, or -2.5%.
