Two Of Every 10 NYC Subways Run Late

nyc subway.jpgTwo of every 10 of the city’s subway trains run late, according to a new measure of on-time performance being adopted by the MTA.

Trains on the numbered lines had the worst performance, with nearly 30 percent running five minutes or more late in August, the data shows. Lettered-line trains did better, with 16 percent running off schedule.

Under a new measuring system, the data is not adjusted to exclude trains late because of track work or emergencies such as sick passengers or Police or Fire Department activity, meaning more trains are counted as late.

Under the measure, called “absolute on-time performance,” 21.6 percent of all trains were five minutes or more late in August – compared to 9.8 percent under the old measuring system.

New York City Transit officials said the new system provides a more honest measure of trains’ performance, and better reflects straphangers’ experience. Metropolitan Transportation Authority watchdogs agree.

Under the new measuring system, the No. 4 was late 55 percent of the time in August, by far the worst performance in the system. But when rated under the old measure, just 26 percent of No. 4 trains ran late.

The best train – not counting the Rockaway and Franklin shuttles, which are on time at or near 100 percent frequency – was the M, with a late rate of 4 percent.

The data, however, covers only trains’ weekday performance.
