10, sure the riots did their cause no good. Surely people who behave this way shouldn’t be taken seriously. But the bar is higher for us – we don’t need to physically riot to be villified; inflammatory rhetoric won’t reflect well on us.

If someone has a direct mesora from and constant contact a LIVING rabbi (or was a talmid muvhak of one with a written tzavaa)then there’s room for acting with kana’us. As for me, I’m a kanai (ok, kanais) for veh’ye bracha and what’s been called, the kiddush Hashem imperative.

In response to your comment on #6, these people define themselves as the toeiva, all we are doing is calling them to task for this. So you are right, the aveira is toeiva, but if one identify oneself as the aveira, the toeiva falls on him/her. Example “________ pride”

Forty years ago anyone who was even suspected of being a toeva was vilified by the same media and excluded by all places of worship. The world has changed so drastically. There is a lot of anger from this group directed at those whom they see as responsible for villifying them-those who follow the Torah, Bible or Koran. This issue is not disappearing anytime soon.

As someone who lives in Los Angeles, we’ve “merited” to witness the tremedous mob scenes in our streets. Another restaurant was forced literally mobbed my screaming mobs of protestors, disturbing the peace of everyone in the area and destroying the business – all because the owner’s daughter gave $100 to support Prop 8. THAT shows a very, very low level of society, and it does show the animalistic, baser part of humans. These people chose such wrong values, and in order to support their position and defend themselves, they (through actual violence) voice their opinions through what we call “free speech.”

I don’t think that’s what the constitution had in mind.. that anyone can say anything at any time. The freedom of speech shouldn’t be taken so far to quash any freedom of personal opinions and peace… and that’s (unfortunately) what’s happening here in Los Angeles.

#1, there is a big problem with your way of thinking. The other week there was a halacha column in Yated with an amazing chiddush concerning I think it was hashavas aveida – common law court was stricter than halacha in mandating a return so halacha was paskened l’maaseh according to the common law so that we wouldn’t be considered less compassionate than the goyim!

This is not done very often and clearly is inappropriate in this case. However, since many people consider opponents to legalizing/consecrating these relationships bigoted and not compassionate, we have to go out of way to act and talk in ways that are warm and compassionate to our fellow man and I mean humanity in general, not just unzere mentschen. This is imperative now and in the coming days more than ever. If we want our stance to be respected we must be the people of deracheha darchei noam in every respect possible.
