NYC Can’t Afford To Hire 1,067 New Cops, But Hires 200 Traffic Agents

(Wednesday, November 26th, 2008)

nypd2.jpgYou may have begun to notice more traffic tickets being written. And you may have guessed — correctly — that it has to do with getting New York City more money. Well, brace yourselves, the city is putting 200 more ticket-writing traffic agents to work.

The city’s latest move to close the budget gap is annoying New Yorkers to no end. Soon, you may not be able to avoid the police no matter what you do. Approximately 100 of the agents will be in Manhattan; the other 100 will be spread out across the other boroughs.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly laid out the plan on Tuesday.

“[We will put them] in Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. We will not deploy them right now in Staten Island,” Kelly said.

The agents will be looking primarily for drivers who “block the box” at intersections. That ticket will cost $115.

The city thinks it can raise an extra $66 million this way.

Meanwhile, the NY Post reports that the NYPD says it can’t afford to hire 1,067 extra cops.

Hmm… how do you avoid having to pay these extra fines? How about not breaking the law??

This is already happening in Flatbush and must be stopped. If there are any community activists out there who can put pressure on our local politicians to stop this harassment of innocent citizens, please step up to the plate

Between my brother-in-law and me, we have over 7,000 dollars in New York Parking fines. Simple answer to them hiring more traffic agents, is don’t pay the tickets.

#3 from what I understand about how the city operates is that you might wake up and find that your car has been towed by the sheriff and it costs a lot of money to get it back and while they are towing it they make sure to hit a nice couple of bumps with it so when you get it back finally it might not be in the same condition as when you parked it so dont be such an oberchuchum

    Two points regarding this issue.

    1. These traffic agents are going to “pay their own way.” The fines received from the tickets they issue will no doubt cover the costs for these agents plus bring the city additional income. This is not the case with ordinary cops.

    2. Can anyone give me a reason that justifies not obeying all traffic rules and parking regulations? Don’t these come under the heading of Dina d’Malchuso Dina? If they do, then how could any Torah Jew not follow them?

    i hate to be a “doomsday sayer”….
but let’s all see the “big picture”

    9/11 — ny

traffic cops — ny (especially targeting our neighborhoods — maybe because we pay the fines)

financial collapse — “wall street” — NY

al qaeda plan to bomb subway — where? NY again

where do the largest concentration of jews outside of israel live ? — NY

    hmmmm… interesting?

The Gemara says ‘bad only comes to the world for the Jewish nation’

lets wake up….all the rabbis are screaming that we are being given our last chances here. let’s ACT like brothers and care for each other. let’s stop the stupidity and running after fake pleasures… let’s pray, cuz Hashem is tightening the noose until we do…and until we get better.
the time is NOW. NOW NOW NOW!!!!

How much does it cost to hire 1000 good cop, and how much does it cost to pay for a fifth as many traffic cops? Maybe the latter will bring in income for the former.

The fines are only issued to those who break the law. How can anyone consider this “harrasment”??? If I speed and get caught, I deserved it. If I park illegally and get caught, I deserved it. Besides, there is logic to the law. Lazy divers who will double park, park close to intersections, park by a hydrant, etc… are putting themselves and others in harms way.

Just a personal story: An 18 wheeler was parked on the corner of the street blocking the stop sign to a busy intersection and as a result my husband went straight through the intersection and into a truck. His car was totalled and he’s lucky to be alive.

    Let them do their jobs!

FOLLOWING THE LAW IS NOT A SOLUTION! I JUST GOT A TICKET WHILE WAITING FOR A PARKING SPOT TO BECOME AVAILABLE. WHEN I ASKED THE POLICE WHY I DESERVE ONE, HE SAID IT’S TAKING TOO LONG! IT THAT NORMAL?
