YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Maran Hagon Rav Elya Svei ZATZAL, the Philadelphia Rosh Yeshiva.
Rav Elya Svei was the Rosh Yeshiva of the Talmudical Yeshiva of Philadelphia, and was internationally known for his incisive, brilliant and clear shiurim, and his ability to offer sage advice to thousands of Jews worldwide. He was a primary student of Hagon Rav Aharon Kotler.
Until his recent illness, he was regarded as one of the foremost leaders of Charedi Jewry, and was a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah.
Rabbi Svei is a son-in-law of Rabbi Avraham Kalmanovitz, the founder of the Brooklyn branch of the Mir Yeshiva, and a brother-in-law of Maran Hagon Rav Shmuel Berenbaum ZATZAL.
The Levaya is scheduled for today, 12:15PM EST at the Philadelphia Yeshiva. The Aron will then be brought to JFK Airport for a 5:00PM Levaya, and will then be flown to Eretz Yisroel for Kevurah.

Is there a levaya/hespeidim in JFK? If so, what time?
The levaya at JFK Airport is planned for 4:30, not 4:00. There will probably not be hespidim at the airport.

#7 thank you so much for that story. A godol B’Yisroel does not come from pure Torah knowledge alone. It comes from personal interactions with other yidden. Rav Svei ztzl was a true godol.

Such sad news.We should only share in many simchas from now on.I never learned by him,but he was the gadol hador.He shoul be a melitz yosher by the kesai hakovod for all of klal yisroel.May we be zoche this year to the geulah and hear onl good things and an end to the tzaros.

It’s already 4:30 PM here in EY and still no info. Why???
Why was the EY info only posted 3.5 hours after it was written and 2.5 hours after the levaya???
here is a little information as to the course of events from jfk to about 10:00AM our time in america.
1-flight departure delayed due to inclement weather.
2- Flight arrival delayed by about 1 hour. (levaya and hespedim are therefor shortened by 1 hour.
3-at airport the niftar was eulogized by Reb Ahron Leib Steinman shlita and reb Michel Yehuda Lefkowitz Shlita and by RavMoshe Hirsch of Slabodka and a talmid of rav Aharon Kotler Zatzal.
4- many others were in attendance dtails to follow.
5- Levaya proceeded to Yeshivas Mir in Bais Yisroel section of Yerushalayim.
6-ram Kol blasting and Signs announced the great Niftar arrived and in on the way to har hazeisim.
7-In the Mir there was Massive crowd ( idont know how many millions were there) it was already after 3:00 on friday afternoon. (spooky how Rav Shach who he was so close to was Nikvar at the same time on friday afternoon).
8-Hespedim were delivered by among others Rav Kalmanovitz who is a shvogger, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel. Tehillim was said and levaya proceeded to Har Hazeisim.
9-Kevura was in the same place where His Parents are.
10-Look out for extensive and accurate coverage this coming week in Yated Neeman.
11-Family will be sitting in philadelphia at his home on (2214)grahamm street 19131
12-Zecher Tzadik Livracha,the greatest zchus for His Neshama Eliyahu Ben Shmuel Leib would be to improve ourselves just a little bit and continue to remain focused on doing just that ,improving in baby steps a bit at a time continuously.
May he be a meilitz yosher on behalf of all of us and hasten the coming of mashiach who he so acutely reminded us about and yearned for waiting for him and looking out for him always.
