NYC: Holiday Trash Bill Picks Up Steam

nycg.jpgBrooklyn, NY – New legislation sponsored by Councilman Simcha Felder that would guarantee trash removal after holidays had a hearing in the Sanitation and Solid Waste Management Committee earlier this week. The bill would mandate the Department of Sanitation to pickup solid waste or recyclable materials within 48 hours after a holiday of observance and without interruption to the regularly scheduled waste collection.

“New Yorkers should not have to be penalized for observing the holidays,” Felder said. “This new bill would ensure that trash does not accumulate after the holidays, which exposes the community to foul odors and possibly disease.”

The Department of Sanitation does not collect recyclable materials on twelve designated holidays throughout the year. On those days, residents, building owners and building managers are obliged to store the materials until the next pickup a week later.

The proposed legislation seeks to expedite this process and prevent the accumulation of refuse in neighborhoods. With five of the twelve designated holidays falling on a Monday, the bill would also alleviate the disproportionate burden for New Yorkers with Monday recycling pickup.

  1. A new sensible approach by Simcha to a difficult situation.
We also must recognize and acknowledge the Sanitation dept for working hand in hand with the community before Pesach- extra pick ups etc…When government is responsive to the needs of its citizens we all must show appreciation and make sure that the the various officials that made it happen are properly thanked by the community. It goes a long way to future accommodation’s and assistance.

    Thank you Simcha.

  2. I don’t understand why we need a law for this. The dep’t operates under direction of the Mayor. Can’t he just have them to their job correctly? Why is a law needed?

  3. I think this is very nice, but how about passing a real simple law yet one that will benefit everyone a lot more. Have garbage pick up and street cleaning at the same time and day of the week. Being that we have to make our selves crazy anyway to not park for 1.5 hours (so the truck that takes exactly 30 seconds to go down a block)for street cleaning, we wont have to spend half our day sitting behind garbage trucks.

  4. Our rececleable collection is on Mondays. Many Holidays (Labor Day, MLK, Memorial etc.) are on Mondays which penalizes us disproportionately. Simcha did the right thing.
