NYC Council Approves Coney Island Plan

astr.jpgIn a vote of 44-to-2, the City Council this afternoon approved a controversial rezoning plan that is expected to change the face of Coney Island.

The plan calls for a new amusement park, high rise apartment buildings and hotels and restaurants. It’s part of the city’s plan to turn the area into a year-round entertainment complex.

Some community groups have criticized the plan, saying it will sanitize the gritty boardwalk area.

An agreement still needs to be reached now with developer Joe Sitt, who owns a significant amount of land within the plan’s reach.
