NYC Department Of Health Goes After Salt In Foods

ks.jpgThe Bloomberg administration has its sights set on a new opponent – salt.

The city Department of Health wants the food industry to cut the amount of salt in packaged and restaurant foods by 25 percent over the next five years.

Unlike the city’s trans-fat ban or calorie count posting regulations, the salt reduction would be voluntary –and there would be no penalties for non-compliance.

The plan would have national implications because manufacturers would change their products not just for New Yorkers, but for everyone.

According to the DOH, 80 percent of the salt in our diets comes from packaged or restaurant foods.

Health experts say the move could reduce cases of high blood pressure, preventing some heart attack and strokes. But some members of the salt industry dispute the claim that salt consumption can be so closely linked to cardiovascular disease.

  1. High fructose corn syrup is worse than sugar. It should be banned. Maybe the food police will put everyone on forced diets and there’ll be no more obesity? Everyone who has a job will have to weigh in once a month and if they’re overweight will have to pay a penalty? I am being facetious of course.I think people will have to take responsibility for their own health and read labels on food packaging. When people stop buying unhealthy food, the manufacturers will have to stop producing it because of lack of demand for it.
