Manhole Fires Snarl Subway Service In Brooklyn


A private contractor installing gas service at 25 Willow Place struck a NYCT electrical line causing multiple manholes to explode in the vicinity of 62 Joralemon Street and causing a temporary power disruption to the NYCT Borough Hall Station.

FDNY has evacuated numerous structures in the vicinity of this incident due to high gas readings and earlier explosions. They are currently in the process of locating the source of a gas leak in the vicinity. OEM is currently in the process of determining the extent of these evacuations.

FDNY-EMS is reporting no injuries at this time.

NYCT Subways is reporting no evacuations, injuries, or stuck trains. They are reporting suspension of the # 4 line both directions between Atlantic Av & Bowling Green. Power has been restored to the Borough Hall Station. 

As per OEM the following street closures are in effect:

Joralemon Street from Hicks St to the Brooklyn / Queens Expressway.

Columbia Place, Willow Street, and Garden Street and Hicks Street are closed between Joralemon and State Street.

Agencies on scene include Con Edison, National Grid, FDNY, NYPD, OEM, and NYCTAR.
