Levaya Of HaRav Gedaliah HaKohen Anemer ZATZAL


YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of HaRav Gedaliah HaKohen Anemer ZATZAL, Marah D’Asra of Young Israel Shomrei Emunah, Rosh HaYeshivah of the Yeshivah of Greater Washington, and President of the Vaad Harabbonim of Greater Washington. He was also the Rav Av Beis Din of the Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington.

Rav Anemar served as the Rov of the Young Israel for 53 years.

He was a Telzer Musmach, and an Adam Gadol. He led his community in Silver Spring, MD, for nearly half a century.

Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer was born in Akron, Ohio. His early schooling was at Tiferas Yerushalayim in New York, and he attended Telse Yeshiva from 1944 to 1956 where he was a talmid of Rabbi Bloch. He received smicha in 1952 and was Rosh Yeshiva of the Boston Rabbinical Seminary, a joint venture of Lakewood and Telshe Yeshivos, in 1956.

Rabbi and Mrs. Anemer came to Young Israel/Shomrei Emunah in Silver Spring, Maryland from Boston. They arrived as YISE moved into their first building on Eastern Avenue in Riggs Park, Washington, DC.

The Levaya is tentatively scheduled for 12:00 noon at Young Israel Shomrai Emunah on Arcola avenue in Silver Spring, MD.

  1. Baruch Dayan Emes.We most certainly will miss him. He built Silver Spring basically from scratch. He was a towering Torah Scholar but also one of the nicest and most approachable Gedolim of our times. What this world has lost, the Yeshiva Shel Malah has gained. May we see Moshiach very, very soon.

  2. Baruch Dayan haEmet. Rabbi Anemer’s students are rabbis and leaders in communities all over the world. Although he left no written works, he was a tremendous scholar and a great posek. He will be greatly missed.

  3. HaRav Anemer Z”tl was a tremendous Tzaddik and Anav and very much loved by the Silver Spring community and beyond. I was in Yeshiva of Greater Washington years ago and I Remember always being uplifted just by seeing him there in the hallways…Baruch Dayan HaEmes.

  4. The body is leaving for Israel this evening on a Continental flight from Newark. Burial will be at Har Manuchos in Yerushalim on Friday afternoon.

  5. The family will be sitting at the Rabbi’s home in Silver Spring through Wednesday morning. Morning minyans will be at 7:30 am, and mincha will be at 7:30 pm. I’m reluctant to post the address online. E-mail the shul at [email protected] for the address.
