This past Pesach, I became acquainted with Daniel Aghami Z"L the decorated Jewish American soldier who was recently killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq. He spent his Pesach holiday with his family in Florida and I was privileged to hear him address the congregation at Chabad of Boynton Beach where both his family and my family daven. He touched all our hearts when he spoke about his experiences as a Jewish American soldier in Iraq. He never hid his Jewish identity. On the contrary, he was proud to be a Jew and was respected for that. At the Kiddush in his honor, following the davening,I and many others told him how proud we were of him. He was truly a modern day hero. I am sure that we all feel pained when when any American soldier falls in war, but how much more so when the soldier is from our own community.

Kiryat Sefer Yid's note inspired me to visit the Jewish War Veteran's website for additional information. I found the following, and intend in the coming days to provide additional information (YW Editor permitting, of course) on how we can reach out to Jewish soliders. The following is a thank you note received by the Jewish War Veterans for care packages distributed to Jewish soliders overseas:

To Whom It May Concern:

I received your care packages you sent us. I distributed these gifts to the Jewish soldiers here at LSA Anaconda, Balad, Iraq. It goes without saying since you and those in the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. know this already. But for the soldiers here, many deployed for the first time, knowing they are not forgotten by fellow American Jews boosts their morale, reassures them that they are doing an important job and increases their pride in being a Jewish soldier.

On behalf of the soldiers here at LSA Anaconda, thank you for your thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity.

Sincerely,

Mordechai E. Schwab
