VIDEOS/PHOTOS: Yassam Cops Move Into Meah Shearim Early Wednesday Morning; Arrests Made

(VIDEOS AND PHOTOS IN EXTENDED ARTICLE)

There was commotion in Meah Shearim early Wednesday morning 24 Menachem Av as a large contingent of Yassam commando police arrived during the predawn hours.

Police entered the community in the hope of arresting Rabbi Leibel Deitch, a prominent rabbinic figure in the community, apparently for his connection to Peleg actions against induction into the IDF. Dozens of community residents were alerted by Whatsapp and they were on the streets in minutes. They did not waste time and began calling police “Nazis”, followed by physical confrontations in the hope of preventing the arrest. Rabbi Deitch was not at home according to reports and police left empty-handed.

Police then headed to the home of Rabbi Yossel Blau, who is affiliated with the Eida Chareidis kashrus. He too is suspected of taking an active role in protests. He was found at home and taken into custody.

From there, police moved to Avinoam Levine Street in the Bucharim area and arrested another Eida askan.

A Breslov avreich was taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon for failing to report to an induction center. He was taken to IDF Prison 4.

Another Breslov chossid was arrested on Tuesday near the entrance to Modi’in Illit. He was wanted by military police for failing to report to the draft as well. He was taken to the Modi’in police station and many chareidim were outside protesting his arrest. Askanim from the Eida Chareidis arrived, telling police the avreich did report a number of times but the matter became complicated and the avreich left the induction center. The Eida Chareidi hired an attorney for him.

In the picture taken in daylight, we see Yassam troops on Wednesday morning waiting to enter a Talmid Torah affiliated with the Peleg faction located on Avinoam Yellin Street at the corner of Yechezkel Street in the capital.

  1. “Dozens of community residents were alerted by Whatsapp and they were on the streets in minutes.” These people have WhatsApp? I learned in the Mir and formed in mesh shearim for a year I doubt these people had WhatsApp. Ywn stop painting these people in a bad light. In some scenarios , situations ,and viewpoints are right. You are wrong for doing that

  2. annoyed – Here in Israel the Chareidim use what they call WhatsApp which is simply a phone number that you call and leave a message and everyone’s phone in your whatsapp group gets a call and can hear the message you left. No smartphones involved.

  3. This is how Israel’s deMockracy regime handles those who dare to protest against his policies. The history of the regime is one of persecution and repression of dissenters. The most fundamental instrument of control the regime has is the draft. The elimination of the draft and the establishment of a professional army would ultimately lead to regime change and the lose of control by Israel’s ruling elite. The draft in Israel has nothing to do with national security and everything to do with cultural and political control. As long as the Hareidim played along and did not openly challenge the system, they were paid off. They got money and exemptions and only had to put up with the occasional secular hypocrisy.

This open defiance can not be tolerated because it will lead to others joining it and the protest could snowball. If the leaders of Peleg and the Eida were more open to the needs of other groups in Israel, they could have presented themselves as the vanguard of a larger protest and many others would have joined them. Unfortunately the borders of their social concerns are rather limited.
