New York City Experiences Unsurpassed Crime Reduction In September


New York City experienced a record low number of index crimes for September 2017, continuing the overall downward trend of the entire year. There were 15 fewer murders, or -42.9%; 30 fewer shooting incidents, or -27.8%; and 458 fewer index crimes, or -5.3% in September 2017, compared with September 2016. These reductions contributed to the 4,518 fewer overall citywide index crimes, or -5.9% year-to-date, compared with 2016.

There were 117 rapes reported in September 2017, compared with 113 in September 2016. This is an increase of 4 crimes, or +3.5%. There were 1,141 robberies reported in September 2017, compared with 1,338 in September 2016. This is a reduction of 197 crimes, or -14.7%. There were 1,718 felonious assaults reported in September 2017, compared with 1,808 in September 2016. This is a reduction of 90 crimes, or -5.0%. There were 975 burglaries reported in September 2017, compared with 1,055 in September 2016. This is a reduction of 80 crimes, or -7.6%. There were 3,637 grand larcenies reported in September 2017, compared with 3,665 in September 2016. This is a reduction of 28 crimes, or -0.8%. There were 536 grand larceny autos reported in September 2017, compared with 588 in September 2016. This is a reduction of 52 crimes, or -8.8%.

“The NYPD continues to work hard in every neighborhood to reduce crime across New York City,” said Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill. “And while we have achieved significant reductions so far this year, what is more meaningful is the manner in which we are doing it. Neighborhood policing is allowing us to count the residents of our local precincts among our strongest partners, fostering trust and making our City safer on every block.”

“The safest big city in America just beat its own record with the safest September in the modern era,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “Congratulations to the men and women of the NYPD and New Yorkers in every community. The pieces are coming together: 2,000 more cops, enhanced training for all officers, upgraded equipment and Neighborhood Policing. This is just the beginning. As the efforts we’ve put in place deepen, we will continue to see crime fall across this city.”

There were 188 crimes reported in the Transit Bureau in September 2017, compared with 211 in September 2016. This is a decrease of 23 crimes, or -10.9%. There were 409 crimes reported in the Housing Bureau in September 2017, compared with 402 in September 2016. This is an increase of 7 crimes, or +1.7%.
